Victor Hugo, figure historiquement connu pour ses influences sociales, politiques, et littéraires, a publié Les Misérables en 1862. La France de son époque était un pays criblé d'agitation politique et de pauvreté, et le problème des pauvres est un thème touché par Hugo pour la totalité de ce grand roman social. Pourquoi a-t-il écrit Les Misérables? Les régimes nombreux du dix-neuvième siècle ont créé un bouleversement politique à la côté des avances industrielles. Aussi, Hugo avait des influences personnelles: la religion, et son rôle comme un poète-prophète, qui l’ont provoqué à essayer d’améliorer la situation du peuple. Aussi, sa mission sociale était liée avec sa carrière politique. Victor Hugo est célébré aujourd’hui parce qu’il est un des écrivains le plus dédié aux gens, et sa contribution à la cause humaine est insondable. Il était un vrai écrivain du peuple.
Dès l’âge de 15 ans, Victor-Marie Hugo a eu du succès à l’écrire quand l’Académie Française a reconnu deux de ses poèmes, et en 1822 il a publié son premier livre. Ce livre était une collection des odes— un fait qui distingue Hugo de ses contemporains. Un homme toujours enclin à philosopher, il a trouvé une passion pour la poésie. Le style des odes déjà était vieil pour les poètes du dix-neuvième siècle, et Hugo a confessé que le genre était considéré généralement froid et monotone, mais il a essayé de le rénover. Son enthousiasme pour le projet était énorme pour le livre qui a entrepris à transformer les sentiments d’une société, il pensait correctement que Les Misérables aura été le plus grand succès de sa carrière. En expliquant les problèmes dans la société en forme du roman, il a réussi à montrer aux autres ce qu’il voulait changer dans le monde.
Un peuple condamné par les renversements du gouvernement, les français ont trouvé que les usines et la société industrielle ne les offre pas les moyens de réussir. Les vieilles familles riches ont retenu la richesse du pays si elles ont aussi gardé la faveur de qu’importe régime contrôlait l’état au moment particulier. Beaucoup de l’intérêt dans la littérature Romantique pour nous aujourd’hui existe dans son mélange du réalisme social et le génie prophétique. Les écrivains comme Victor Hugo avaient vu les premières grandes usines, les premiers trains, dans la France, et ils voyaient ces innovations, et les conséquences de l’industrialisme sincèrement. Les problèmes dans le livre reflète ce qui Hugo verrait aux rues de Paris et quelques autres villes de France. Les problèmes en France n'avaient pas reçu assez attention des chefs du gouvernement. Victor Hugo, a historic figure known for his social, political, and literary influences, published Les Misérables in 1862. The France of his time was a country crippled by political unrest and poverty, and this poverty is a theme touched often by Hugo throughout the totality of his grand social novel. Why did he write Les Misérables? The numerous regimes of the nineteenth century created a system of political upheaval alongside industrial advances. Hugo also had personal influences: religion, and his role as a poet-prophet, which provoked him to try to help the publics’ situation. Also, his social mission was linked to his political career. Victor Hugo is celebrated today because he is one of the most dedicated writers for the people, and his contributions to the human cause are unfathomable. He truly was the people’s writer.
From the age of fifteen, Victor-Marie Hugo claimed success at writing when l’Académie Française recognized two of his poems, and in 1822 he published his first book. This book was a collection of odes — a fact that distinguished him from his contemporaries. A man always inclined to philosophize, he found a passion for poetry. The style of odes was already old for the poets of the nineteenth century, and Hugo confessed that the genre was generally considered cold and monotone, but he had tried to revive it. A profound Romantic, he interested himself with poverty and other grand causes of the time. Romanticism is defined by Hugo as “truth in the form, mixing of genres, liberty in art, and liberalism in literature.” The humanitarian causes he devoted his life to gave his political proceedings a firm base. The Romantic spirit forced dramatic changes in economics, political science, and also in history, literature, and the arts. The nature of the transformation is sufficiently defined by Hugo’s words when he speaks of the substitution of social questions for political ones in 1834. Even as a young man he saw a link between literature and social questions. He was a man touched by those who suffer, and he wanted to better the lives of the poor. He knew that for several centuries, particularly in France, the educated public learned philosophy through literature, so if he wanted the politicians and high society to share his political views, he needed to write a reactionary novel. Although he was in love with the lyrics and the magic of poetry, he chose to write a social novel because he required the panorama of myth and fantasy that we find in Les Misérables. What we find is the art of a bard spinning his epic for the captivated listeners. He found a sense of liberation in writing a novel, and his readers are appreciative of his efforts. The most important event of his career between the publication of Les Contemplations and when he returned from exile was the completion of Les Misérables in 1862. His enthusiasm for the project was enormous for the book that aimed to transform the sentiments of a society. He correctly thought that Les Misérables would be the greatest success of his career. In explaining the problems of a society in novel form, he succeeded in showing everyone what he wanted to change in the world.
A public condemned by government overthrows, the French found that the factories and the industrial society did not offer them the means to succeed. The old, rich families retained the country’s wealth as long as they also kept the favor of whichever regime controlled the State. Much of the Romantic interest in literature for us today exists in the mixing of social realism and prophetic genius. Writers like Victor Hugo saw the first big factories, the first trains, in France, and they sincerely saw these innovations, and the consequences of industrialism. Hugo and his contemporaries looked for appeasement for the lower class, and some Romantic writers threw themselves into the social struggle as early as the 1830s. No one took this task on as seriously and gravely as Victor Hugo. Among the numerous themes of his novel Les Misérables, Hugo’s concern for the degredation of the impoverished is the most elevated. This theme rings from the title and dominates the lives of the key characters. Hugo writes of his position, ‘“There is a point… where the unfortunate and the repugnant mix together and are blended into only one word, a lethal word, the misérables.’” Hugo was obsessed with the misery of others, so obsessed that he dedicated a large part of his exile to describing it in writing. According to the English critic Marva Barnette:

Hugo saw that the people suffered, and he said, “the highest hope comes from the most profound mourning, thank God for giving us the right to suffer.” Hugo was condemned also, but in exile, not in the slums among those with whom he was concerned. He was exiled from the country of his heart.
One of Napoléon III’s first decrees contained the exile of Hugo. In 1852, Hugo took refuge on the island of Jersey, and he stayed there until the end of the Empire. When Napoléon III proclaimed a general pardon for those who were exiled by his coup d’état in 1859, Hugo answered, “When the liberty returns, I will return.” He stayed I exile until the fall of Napoléon III in 1870. Influenced by his father, an old general under Napoléon I, “the son of General Hugo never could stop admiring the genius of the grand emperor and the cavalries of his armies.” In the eyes of Victor Hugo, Napoléon III and the form of society that comes with an empire caused almost all of the problems. Hugo detested the titles gained under the empire; In Les Misérables, the statute of “baron” for Marius represents his hatred towards the title that Hugo inherited himself from his Napoleonic grandfather. The idea of heritage was a concern among the French leaders. Marius’s grandfather, M. Gillenormand, typifies the most extreme form of French conservatisme in the 1820s and 30s. M. Gillenormand, an old general of Napoléon I, is disappointed when his grandson rallies against the grandson of Napoléon I. While Hugo thought that Napoléon I was magnificent, he detested his grandson and his supporters. Through reflecting, Hugo decided to focus his political efforts to the left. He had been a conservative, but his companionate sentiments pushed him a more liberal position. During the Second Republic, Hugo proclaimed himself a socialist. Of his prose writings, Les Misérables best illustrates his socialist thoughts. His beliefs became more socialist in effect, and he used them to fight for human rights. Hugo’s life is seen as a battle for his beliefs; battles which occurred in the public scene and his own conscience. Aside from his political motives, Hugo had personal reasons for writing Les Misérables too.
Hugo’s experiences gave him a motive for writing the novel that changed the views of many people. The digressive design of Les Misérables is more celebrated than that of Notre-Dame de Paris, which is an example of the mass material that Hugo could take from a historical period in which he lived. It’s true that he did not live in the slums, but he saw how poverty crippled a society. Hugo had an encyclopedic spirit. He had knowledge of history, religion, legends, and literature. I also philosophized from time to time. His education permitted him to see the situation in France in an array of disciplines. In looking at history, philosophy, political science, and his own idealizations, he chose a path that focused on the public. Hugo fused a visionary temperament with humanitarian militantism in an engagement to a moral, political, and metaphysical illumination for people. This focus was not always strong because he had some very sad times. His daughter drowned when he was away from home, and in the years following, his two sons contracted typhoid. So, he became a poet of shadows who was obsessed with death and what existed past it. One of his very well-known poems is Demain dès l’aube. Written during this sad period, the poem depicts his march to his little girl’s tomb. Full of emotions, we see there the misery that Hugo has experienced himself. His personal mission was corrupted for a few years, but he set his concentrations to other people again. He developed into a man of great pity. His social pity is maintained in the evangelical tenderness of his writing. Of all these reasons for him to be a man devoted to others, Hugo was very pushed by the idea of democracy. “It is because his life and work are the incarnation of the democratic Idée that Hugo seems to us the most important and most representative nineteenth-century writer. Time after time he sought to arouse the conscience of mankind against tyrants.” His belief in the liberty of men came to be an essential part of his life.

I can remember that when I was young, about five or six years old, I had the notion that growing up was about completion. Adults were 100% of who they would always be, and I had until I was a grown-up to soak up all of the information I could. When I turned 18, the idea was still in my mind, and I remember feeling disappointed that I wasn't done yet. It took all of college for me to learn that humans, by nature, are never done growing. Yes, I am looking for a career so I can make a living, I am also looking for a career because I want an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve. I love languages, and I love that as a translator I can help people communicate. I hope to foster this love in a meaningful career as a multilingual translator.
