Source text - English The Global Poker Index is proud to announce that former World #1 tennis professional, and poker enthusiast Boris Becker has become the newest voice of support on behalf of the GPI.
As the GPI’s newest advocate the six-time Grand Slam Champion is set to promote poker and its players in new ways, bridging the game with the world of sports and helping to push our game-changing ranking system into the public limelight. Becker has grown from a poker novice, dabbling in his first tournaments, to become one of the biggest celebrity names actively in the game today. The GPI is thrilled to have his full support going forward.
It’s fitting that Becker, a former Olympic Gold Medalist, joins the GPI as fellow Germans, including Marvin Rettenmaier, Philipp Gruissem and 2013 GPI Player of the Year Ole Schemion, have dominated the live tournament poker circuit this past year, further cementing Germany’s place amongst poker’s elite.

“I wouldn’t have played ace-seven if it hadn’t been suited,” Bill explained to me. He had just raked in a huge pot with the nut flush.
“I see,” said I. But I really didn’t see, not at all. He had jumped into my hold ’em pot pre-flop, calling a huge raise. His ace-seven was unprofitable, measured in the long term, whether the cards shared the same suit or not.
For readers who don’t understand the terminology, when two-card starting hold ’em hands contain different suits, we typically refer to them as “unsuited” or having “mixed suits.” When the suits match, we call them “suited.”
The concept of suited starting cards in hold ’em is misunderstood. So, we’ll investigate it in today’s self-interview.

Source text - English Great question, @name. It’s possible that some Pages are not experiencing the same level of organic reach decline as others and that some organic reach may actually increase. There are multiple factors that can impact organic reach, including how people are engaging with content and how closely connected (as measured by their previous engagement) they are to a Page. Learn more here...
Hi @name. With more and more people connecting with friends and Pages, and sharing content, the competition for every story to be included in the News Feed increases. While this means people will see more interesting content from more sources, it also means that Pages will likely see changes in distribution, including a decline in organic reach. Our goal is to have the News Feed display the most relevant content to each person based on how they engage with content on Facebook. Learn more...
Hi @name. Organic reach is declining because competition in News Feed is increasing. Your Page posts are competing with every other type of content that is eligible for News Feed distribution. As people connect with more friends and Pages, and share more content, Pages will likely see changes in distribution, including a decline in organic reach. Learn more here:

The game everybody can play (children/youth/seniors) and should play under fair-play rules.
● Play fair with no physical contact. (No tackles, only blocking shots, ball can only be grasped from opponent when it is "free" (in the air or on the ground)
● Max. 3 steps with the ball in hand. / No dribbling.
● 3 players + 1 goalkeeper (e.g. 1vs1, 2vs2, etc. depending on size of playing field: Up to a maximum of 7vs7)
● Each judgement is made through dialogue between players (with or without a referee involved)
SH court:
● Play towards 2 goals with a semi-circular or straight lines goal area of 4 or 6 meters in front of each goal (depending on players' age (children or adults). Court size is up to you to decide (e.g. 10x15). It will depend on the street/market place/city square/ schoolyard/car park/closed street project or street court available or your outdoor/indoor handball court.
● Street Handball can be played everywhere.
You choose:
● Scoring system (Or play without calculating; the point of the game is to have fun).
1 point = standard goals.
2 points = ball played around your back and between the legs, 6m penalty shot, score
by goalkeeper, goal is scored with a spectacular action e.g. in-flight/pirouette
(at referees' discretion), a female player scored (with mixed teams).
● Duration: 1x10 or 2x10 mins. Depending on number of teams.
● Each team has to have 3 passes within the team before shooting towards goal.
● No permanent positions. Everybody can be goalkeeper. Keeper joins attacks.
● Outnumbering the defending team provides for more shots on goal.
● Street Handball is about FLOW; let the game "flow", avoid interruptions (e.g. you may ignore a player touching the line of the goal area, 4 steps, etc.”
● Fair Play Diploma / Trophy to the best player/team.
● Any balls/handballs/soft handballs/specific balls for Street Handball can be used.
● Play handball and have fun (girls and boys) maybe with a DJ.

in your neighbourhood. Enjoy the team spirit.

Japanese to English: Japanese market research to English translation (about mouse and keyboard) General field: Marketing Detailed field: Marketing / Market Research
Source text - Japanese 大きさは普通だが、蛍光の青が非常にスタイリッシュでカッコイイ。シンプルな長方形でノートパソコン用のバッグにもすんなり入りそう。
Translation - English The size is normal but its fluorescent blue looks extremely stylish and cool. I think this simple rectangular shape fits easily in the bag for laptops.
It is good that just one USB receiver connects both keyboard and mouse. The price is also reasonable. I think it will be better if it had a number pad.
It is good that the brand seems reliable and the battery life lasts long.
This is not my taste as the size of the keyboard is too small, which might affect typing. If this is for carrying, I might choose more compact and smaller one.
I want a number pad. Also I prefer a white color.
It requires a number pad so I think it has no use to me.
Without having an enough key pitch, I might press a key next to the right key or press a wrong key.
The blue letters on the black background seem hard to see in a dark environment.
I don't like this as it uses a dry cell. I prefer a chargeable battery.
The most important thing is comfortability in typing and durability. I can't say anything about this until I actually use it.
A keyboard should be durable and has an enough size and weight, which helps typing without causing fatigue. A mouse should fit within the hand and be durable.
I often use outside, so I prefer a nice looking one.
I prefer a full sized keyboard as I have a lot of opportunity to use a keyboard both at home and office. I think a compact size is more suitable for mobile devices.
I use an external keyboard more often outside so I prefer a compact size.
Definitely the smaller one is better as I can use it for a laptop.
I have had an experience with the big USB being caught in my clothes and corrupted.
The bigger USB is easy to handle.
Based on my previous experience, I feel the smaller USB has more chance to become defective or go wrong.
It seems comfortable in use as its shape fits the hand.
Because the design with fluorescent blue looks cool.
I have an impression that Switzerland is strong in precision equipment so I think it is offering high quality products.
I have just discovered Logicool is a Swiss brand and now I like it even more.
I think this is good. A Swiss brand is known to be good quality and I couldn't tell that by the brand name. If the product is cheap, I can't help thinking it is made in China so the brand name is better than nothing.
This brand is the most used in the world so it seems reliable and easy to use.
As I have used many products in Logicool, I didn't know it was a Swiss brand. I think they should focus more advertising on it being a Swiss made brand.
I want to collect the same design in keyboard and mouse.
It takes a lot of space to insert several USB receivers. A pair of USB receivers is more slim and economical, in my opinion.
Because I'd like to compare and consider if a mouse actually fits the hand.
When buying and replacing a new one due to its breakdown, I think I prefer to buy either a keyboard or mouse.
Even if it is sold in a set, it doesn't always mean both are useful to me.
A mouse has less variation between products but a keyboard has many variables depending on the product.
Because I hardly come across a mouse that fits my hand as my hands are big. Also due to my occupation, I spend more time using a mouse to draw plans or illustrations rather than a keyboard, so a mouse is more important to me.
It is good because it can work on both PC and tablet, but I think it is too compact for desktop PC.
I think it is convenient that this can work on various devices.
This seems difficult to use because it lacks type feeling.
I felt this looked a little cheaply made.
I need some thickness to the keyboard. I want to feel when pressing a key.
I don't mind the thickness of the keyboard, but I need an angle. The flat model is uneasy to type.
The thinner model is better for carrying, but I don't like keyboards with a short keystroke.
I think this is good for carrying. However, I don't want it if it is uneasy to type.
It will be convenient if I can use it but I don't care too much.
As I don't use Bluetooth, it can't be the clincher for me.
As I find it a burden to carry other receivers, I prefer a device linked to Bluetooth.
It is extremely important. It is very good that this can work on various devices.
Since there has been an increase of PCs being linked to Bluetooth, I don't find it very special. It might be important that the space for one USB is available when I use a laptop.
I never use a keyboard except with a PC, this feature is not important to me.
I don't find it appealing, as I don't see the necessity of using a keyboard on a smartphone.
Apart from a desktop PC, it is convenient that I can use it on a tablet or smartphone, but this is of little importance to me.
The positives are reasonable price and high operating accuracy. The negative is more dust can catch in the electrical wiring.
It is good that the reaction to the operation is stable but the wiring is inconvenient.
Positive: I don't have to worry about the battery. Negative: I often find the wiring annoying.
When the battery is low, it sometimes causes error in typing.
The positives are cleanliness on a desk due to having no cables. It is ok to type from a little distance. The negative is that I have to change batteries even though this doesn't happen often.
The positive is I can keep it clean and neat without wiring. The negative is it can be confusing when setting up as I'm not familiar with using it.
The positives: Comparatively compact. No trouble with the cable. No mess on the desk. It is easy to clean up. The negatives: Requires battery. It is no use if the battery runs out. Running cost is high. It can't be used immediately when in an emergency. Pairing can be troublesome if it is Bluetooth.
The positives: The desk looks smart. No need to connect a cable. The negatives: No key response can occur in rare cases. A little expensive.
The positive is less frustration with short cable length. The negative is if I don't choose a higher price one, the battery may not last as long and the accuracy can drop down.
I prefer wireless if I have to choose as I can move my desktop PC to any room.
Wired is suitable for office, but for home accessories, I prefer wireless with no mess and comfort.
Wired is ok for speakers, as I don't have to move them all the time.
I don't have a strong preference. If I have to choose, I prefer wireless. The reasons are it looks better with no wiring mess and is easy to clean.
If I put an emphasis on operating and accuracy for work, I will choose wired. However, I prefer wireless for home as it looks neater and is easy to clean.
If the usability doesn't change at all, of course I prefer wireless, as it looks smart and neat. If it affects the functions and stability, I think it doesn't necessarily have to be wireless.
In regards to speakers and headphones, I can't think of using anything other than wired. The quality of the sound is too low with wireless.
I have used a Logicool mouse for long time, and I feel its usability is the best. However, the possibility of breakdown is high and I feel unsecure without having more than 2. Also the quality has become lower recently. I feel disappointed as it costs more than 10000 yen and it sometimes has many scratches even though it is brand new. This brand is making a product with good functions but its quality management system is bad.
Their warranty period is long, which is good and gives the impression its reliable to use. I don't have any reasons to dislike it.
The quality of a mouse is overwhelmingly higher than the other makers. The mouse I'm currently using is Logicool made. About the quality of a keyboard, I have no specific opinion.
The design and usability are good. Also it is a good buy considering the price.
The maker is a pioneer with PC accessories. I think they have invented products that meet users' needs. This is one of my favorite brands.
Currently I'm using their speakers. I like them because they are more reasonably priced than other companies, and there are no problems with the quality of functions. While their products are mostly a combination of black and blue, I don't like this color combination.
Their mouse has a low price and is easy to use so I'm using it. However, I don't use their keyboard, as I don't like the key touch feeling.
Currently I'm using their products and I highly appreciate them. I think they offer a reasonable price and it's hard to go wrong.
I didn't know the name of this brand until now. I think they are good as they don't pursue the unique design but their design and style are more conventional. They also focus on the durability and stability of their devices, which gives me a reliable impression.
When I purchase a mouse, I choose mostly the Logicool brand as they offer a product with a reasonable price, which gives me a good impression.
The set of keyboard and mouse is reasonable and their design is also cool.
The size is the same as the one I'm currently using and there is no feeling of discomfort. Its price is also reasonable. I can select a mouse among my favorite.
Because it comes with a number pad and is wireless. Among the full sized keyboard, this is comparatively compact and I felt its usability seems good. It would be better if the warranty period was explained, to give a clear description of the product.
Because the mouse and keyboard are linked through one receiver. The price is also reasonable. I'd like to try and use it to experience its convenience.
I can use it for a smartphone.
Because the outside looks slim and the metallic design is stylish. As it compliments the interior of my room, I thought it is good for my home.
If the keyboard stopped working and it needed to be replaced, I would choose a wired keyboard.

YOSUKE KUBOZUKA “I was extremely happy.”
Even though he has appeared in films, these roles were generally considered inferior to his overwhelming performance in sensational TV dramas such as “Ikebukuro West Gate Park”, “Strawberry on the Shortcake” and etc. However, this year he has been continuously challenged to play very hard roles; a queer detective who has a fetish for dressing up in women’s clothes in “Oboreru Sakana” directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, in March a teenage boy who has a scar on his head in “Laundry” directed by Junichi Mori, in summer a young Korean boy living in Japan in “GO” directed by Isao Yukisada, and in autumn an energetic high school student who has no other interest besides ping pong in “ping pong” directed by Fumihiko Sori. For Yosuke Kubozuka, this year is literally a movie year.
“Until last year, I had been thinking it doesn’t matter films or TV dramas and all I have to do is the same as these were for my own work pieces. But since I performed in “GO”, I realized films are totally different from TV dramas and commercials. It came home to me that people can’t see films unless they pay money. I realized the very basic fact that film is film.”
This makes us take notice of his self-awareness as a movie star who brings people to the theater. We can also feel it in his filming locations. It was the day after he did the scene of his classmate’s birthday party in a Roppongi club. Once the shootings had finished, he was greeting and shaking hands with more than 100 extras while saying “ Thank you for working with me. Please watch the movie when it’s released.”
Yosuke Kubozuka is also eager to convey his opinions even though most of the actors are hesitant to do so. “GO” is based on Kazuki Kaneshiro’s novel of the same title, which tells the story of a Korean Japanese teenager Sugihara, whose father had North Korean nationality but obtained South Korean nationality. Sugihara attended a North Korean junior high school, but he chose to go to a Japanese high school. He was questioning himself that nationality is not a big issue while his classmates were different. Yosuke can’t stop talking about the puzzlement and process of acting as a prejudiced teenager once he starts talking. He perorated for 10 minutes in the press conference for the public presentation.
“What I struggled with the most this time was Sugihara is Korean Japanese and I’m Japanese. This is a fact that I can’t compensate for. I was not sure how far I should understand the issue of discrimination by myself, which convinces myself. I have read lots of books such as “Minzoku kara yomitoku ‘America’” (Kazuyuki Matsuo, Kodansya Sensyo Metier), the book written by Martin Luther King, Jr., The Autobiography of Malcolm X, “M/Sekaino Yuutsuna Sentan” (Shinobu Yoshioka, Bungeishunju), and “Yaminikieta Kaijin Glico Morinaga ziken no Shinso” (Fumiya Ichihashi, Shincho Bunko). The important way to approach Sugihara, was to understand the system of Japanese society surrounding me and to know what causes its gap. I felt some facets were physically difficult. Sugihara started boxing, taught by his father at his early age and he has been boxing for 7 years. I went to gym but I thought I can’t be as real as his well-trained body. I know it’s impossible to act exactly like he is. What matters after all, is how deeply I can go into the role in the limited time. It’s a race against time as always. To approach Sugihara as close as I could, I used my own clothes when I acted his high school years.”
Mr. Kaneshiro, the original author gave him “The Catcher in the Rye”, a novel describing youth vividly but he said he didn’t read it, which shows his unique character. However, this film grapples squarely with a delicate problem such as racial segregation, while it lightly portrays first love a general theme, which creates the similar worldview of “The Catcher in the Rye”. He said he talked in the eel restaurant with the Director Isao Yukisada about how they should depict “GO”.
“What we first talked about in the eel restaurant, was the scene where Sugihara first attempted to make love with his girlfriend, Sakurai. I said I wanted to make it the most graphic scene. For me it was really important to express a feeling and air of tension as real when he first confesses that he is Korean to her. I asked the director that I would like to do a run-through. The director was going to shoot this scene with no cut, but on the next day after the shooting, he told me that he succeeded in shooting the most beautiful scene that he had ever done, which made me extremely happy.”
Another highlight of this film is the struggle between Sugihara and his parents, who are strong characters. His parents (Tsutomu Yamazaki and Shinobu Otake) teach in sometimes a violent way, how to survive in the Japanese society to his son with a complicated background. There is no darkness but filled with brightness and painful sometimes. Their face-to-face parent-child relationship is the envy of us.
“What I was surprised by while collaborating with Ms. Otake, who has a long acting career, was every time she became nervous before the performances, which made me feel fresh. Through the whole shootings, Mr. Yamazaki’s face left a strong impact on me. I mean I felt how you have lived in your real life shows on your face. What excited me was that I could experience the fighting scene. In that scene, it was different from the previous arrangement and I was punched in the balls! It was so painful but because of that, I think we could make the scene dynamic.”
The character of Yosuke Kubozuka consists of fresh immaturity due to his age and the inside passion which we can’t see from his outside looking. These comfortably match with this cold era. I hope the success of “GO” filled with young and energetic freshness helps support a new unique star who carries this Japanese film world.

KO SHIBAZAKI/Born in 1981/Debuted in 2000, “Tokyo Trash Baby”/Also famous for “Battle Royale” (2000), “Makeup Artist KEWAISHI” (2002), and “Soundtrack” (2002)
“GO” will inevitably become one of the masterpieces from this year. In this film, which tells a story of a Japanese-born North Korean teenager Sugihara (Yosuke Kubozuka), Ko Shibazaki, who performed passionately in “Battle Royale”, was selected for his Japanese girl Sakurai whom he falls for. This casting was decided in response to a fervent request from the original author, Kazuki Kaneshiro.
“Mr. Kaneshiro happened to pass by me in my hometown, and since then he had been thinking to give me Sakurai’s role if he made his book into a movie. I heard it later and thought how funny a turn of fortune’s wheel is.” She said she had already read the original novel when she got his offer. “To be honest, I didn’t have confidence in acting as Sakurai at that time. I had thought Sakurai’s character is totally different from mine. As I read the original novel, I had some sympathy with her and I liked her philosophical way of thinking, but I thought my way of expressing and hers were different… Once I started getting into the role, I realized she is a normal girl.”
It was the scene where she went into the hotel and was shocked by his confession about his nationality background, this came home to her that Sakurai is a normal girl and made her more into the role.
“Until that time, she had her own worldview and showed her prejudiced world even among others. She reacted “fearfully” to his confession as she grew up in an environment where she wasn’t allowed to become friends with Chinese and Korean people. There is a huge gap between me and her in that point. She is guided by what others told her, which also hurts other people. I could get into her by such gap and weakness.”
Ko had detailed instructions and advice from the Director Isao Yukisada as she was shown the storyboards.
“I think the director’s image is the most important thing. I’m the one who is made to think, rather than the one who thinks by myself. I appreciate the director’s proper explanation and emotional advice. In addition, Mr. Kubozuka is an actor who creates the role by himself, which also stimulated me. What I seem to understand by reading a script, may turn into a totally different thing when I actually play my role with him on filming location. I really think that I owe the Director Yukisada and Mr. Kubozuka for helping me to act as Sakurai this time.

INTERVIEW ISAO YUKISADA
Interviewer Makoto Kanazawa
ISAO YUKISADA/Born in 1968/Served as assistant director on Shunji Iwai/Debuted “OPEN HOUSE” (1998)/Also famous for “Himawari” (2000), “A Closing Day” (2000), “Luxurious Bone” (2001), “Rock ‘n’ Roll Missing” (2002), and “Kanon” (2003)
The Director Isao Yukisada, who completed the new film “GO”, felt making the original novel into a film would be difficult when he read it first.
“I was told by the producer whom I knew that it would be a great film. I had already read the original novel before it won the Naoki Prize. I found it interesting, as its way of telling the story is like American literature but I was not sure if the film would be as interesting as the novel. I didn’t think the main character Sugihara is attractive. The story is about a loutish guy who will be purified when he meets a pretty girl. The loutish leading actor can’t make a good film in a major filming company. In the original novel, there are many episodes written about his nationality background, but I thought focusing on just his nationality is wrong. The most interesting aspect of this novel is about his love story. If I try to make it into a simple ‘Boy Meets Girl’ movie, I need distinguished staging ability. So I was wondering who would be a director of this film.”
Then I became “the one”.
“I couldn’t decide whether to accept the offer or not when I first heard about this project early this year. I just wanted to try making not only original films, but films based on novels as I am a professional film director. So I decided to do only films based on novels as my business outline for this year. Also I wanted to work with Yosuke Kubozuka. When I accepted the offer as a director, I had already decided to use him as a leading actor. That’s why I took this task. My idea was if Kubozuka plays a main role, why don’t we find his original Sugihara? According to my analysis, he is an actor with craftsmanship who researches a role and turns himself into a real character on each film. He seems he changes even how he speaks but I thought in this film, real Kubozuka would be better. When I first met him, I said ‘Probably most of the time, the roles you performed approached you, but this time you have to approach the role. Then, we hit it off.”
It’s known that Yosuke Kubozuka has read various literature to perform as a Korean Japanese Sugihara. What kind of thoughts did the director have about Korean Japanese?
“My hometown is Kumamoto prefecture. When I was a kid, I had a zainichi Korean friend, who is a permanent ethnic Korean resident of Japan. I would hang out with him. We have a local festival called “Boshita Festival”, which praises Kiyomasa Kato’s Imujin War. All the children must join this festival. A zainichi Korean friend of mine was absent from class during this festival, which revealed the fact that he is zainichi Korean among the children. After the festival I became estranged from him, as under the circumstances being friends with him caused me to be in trouble. But we had a promise to hunt spot-billed ducks together in the lake nearby. I tried to keep the promise. We were supposed to meet there but I was late for the appointment time. There was only pachinko left to hunt spot-billed ducks. I went back home alone, but I heard his drowned body was found in the lake. That was the first moment that I faced death. I’d like to make a film about this someday. This film has a scene in which Sugihara’s best friend, Jong-ll died without saying what he wanted to tell Sugihara. I can really feel the atmosphere of this scene. I have thought it is ridiculous to segregate against Korean Japanese and I couldn’t find any meaning in it. We are all humans. I think the 20 century was the era tied to the past wars. I wanted to reset it in the 21st century and make a film which let us forget about it. In that point, “GO” is the most suitable film, I thought.”
In the film, Sugihara’s journey of overcoming the racial wall between Japan and Korea was described. It was Ko Shibazaki acting as a Japanese girl whom he falls for that made him change.
“I wanted her to stay a cheerful and pretty girl. I wanted to dissipate her strong and solid image of her past acting roles, so she could her to act as herself. Shibazaki is very shy and hesitant to act like a cute girl. I asked her to perform specifically what I wanted for her role.”
Apart from such Sakurai’s cuteness, another aspect was revealed in the scene where Sugihara first confesses that he is Korean Japanese in the hotel.
“I told Shibazaki to do whatever she wants in that scene. In this scene, Sakurai first tells Sugihara her full name, but Shibazaki cried when she had rehearsal. Shibazaki said, ‘Why am I crying? Sugihara is much more pitiable. I don’t know why but I can’t stop crying.’ I said, ‘Isn’t that because of your vanity?’ Then, I finished shooting as she was. Her acting in that scene was great.”
After all, Sugihara is rejected by Sakurai and leaves the hotel. The script tells the scene in which Sugihara’s feelings explode and screams.
“But I thought ‘Sugihara’ being created by me and Kubozuka, wouldn’t be doing the scream scene. I thought he would accept this situation. I felt so right up until the day before shooting. On that day, Kubozuka was not there, I was not sure how he feels even though I think I don’t need it. However on the shooting day, he came closer to me and asked me if we need this scene. Kubozuka was feeling exactly what I felt. I think at that time my thoughts and his were really synchronized. I felt we are working on this film together.”
The Director Yukisada has created films with low budget. What was your impression of finishing shooting a major film of Toei?
“After the film has completed, I was told ‘Thank you for your work.’ by Toei people. I had never thought the film director was told such things, so I’ll never forget that pleasure. I will try shooting, regardless major or independent films.”

MOVIE REVIEW 1 MASAAKI OBA
The film “GO” portrays a zainichi Korean teenager Sugihara, who goes his own way in an era where history and ideology have been corrupted, without being bound by the original sense of values or dead systems. His father Hideyoshi, who was also a zainichi North Korean, was a communist believing in Marxism. Three years ago, he suddenly started saying he wanted to go to Hawaii, “the symbol of corrupted Capitalism” and he changed his nationality from North Korean to South Korean. Sugihara who became Korean chose to go to a Japanese high school, after graduating from a North Korean junior high school. In this drama, through Sugihara’s view in which he tries to expand his choices for the future, Japanese society will be dissimilated.
The film is based on Kazuki Kaneshiro’s novel, which won the Naoki Prize but the novel and the film have a different stance.
In the novel, investigating the racial barrier between Korean and Japanese in the original viewpoint expands the reader’s view, while creating impressive drama. Theories of Japanese cultural or racial uniqueness about DNA, music such as jazz, classic or Bruce Springsteen, and the names and messages of Langston Hughes or Malcolm X give a manifold of light to the racial barrier and throw it off balance. The story has a quote “long separation”, but the part of describing the relationships between teenagers with a hard edge style, who are opposed in an alienated community, but have a mutual understanding inside their hearts, makes me cry. There is a strong touch of irony when a leading female character Sakurai’s father, calls black and Indian people as African American or Native American but has a prejudice against Chinese and Korean.
There are some similar factors in the film too.
However, the film places more focus on intimately describing the personalities of each of the characters, and the relationship with an avant-garde sense rather than the racial barrier. Take for example the relationship of Sugihara’s family. In the novel, they faced the community’s prejudiced ways about the racism, while speaking of extremes, the film questions Japanese Society and how this family ought to be.
His father Hideyoshi was a professional boxer. When Sugihara is arrested by the police for mischief, Hideyoshi beats him up until the police become surprised and say to his son, “You didn’t have to go to court this time again. Thank me?’ His mother Michiko tames her violent husband by saying, “I’m leaving home” as her last resort, and treats Sugihara and his friends as if they are babies, so that they can’t argue with her. Sugihara can’t resist his mother, and is beaten up by his father but he is guided and supported tacitly, which encourages him to make a step forward into a new world. Their relationship seems rough and boorish but they are connected by necessity.
Without having the basics such as history and ideology, what will be lost from the family embedded in consumer society, is the necessity of bonding with individuals within the family. Consumer society scatters the standardized image of happiness. The family cannot maintain its function with its inner necessity, however they try to remain a family by living in the image of happiness. However, the standardized happiness relativizes the identity, dissipates the outside that brings the viewpoint capturing the reality as subjective, and ends up being blocked up. Sakurai’s father seems the intelligence who has experienced living in abroad but his words won’t let us feel the real outside.
“GO” is a film that throws question at the closed society rather than at the nationalities or the racial barrier by depicting the necessity of bonding with the individuals dynamically.

MOVIE REVIEW 2 NAOFUMI HIGUCHI
“Like my old man, because the second and third generation of zainichi, with its sentimentality and powerlessness, has caused the zainichi a lot grief and difficulty.” I noticed Isao Yukisada’s rage and intention of separation to Japanese film industry by seeing the naturally curly hair boy, Yosuke Kubozuka yelling such things in the taxi. What has made Japanese films boring was parents’ generation, who tried to cover up abstractly the films’ poverty caused by the low filming conditions with specious literature. Because of this idea which looks serious but exiguous, most of the young audience abandoned Japanese films. Thus, while he deals with the heavy theme “zainichi”, he never runs off from the literature, and simply makes an interesting film in itself. Such an attitude of the director can be seen through Curlly’s way of performing the character.
In fact, the opening scenes which begin with his sprint like a Super Great Chicken Race in the underground railway. His dropkick as if he were Bruce Lee are filled with the material sense of a comic picture, due to Yosuke Kubozuka’s stylish performances and Isao Yukisada’s creative film cutting design like MTV. The serious literature around the zainichi issue seems to be forgotten and making good headway. As a matter of course, the story sketches episodes of segregation and prejudice on Curlly and his friends, but its process circumvents falling into the dark abyss of expression about “zainichi” with excellent cinematic editing skills. In summary the harsh teacher and the class for self-criticism in a North Korean junior high school, the passage of the senior student’s fingerprinting system, and even the tragic episode as his best friend, Jong-ll, the film eradicates unnecessary gravity with a drastic editing and keeps its virginity as an entertaining movie “GO”.
Similar to dodging in a careful and shy way, is an embarrassing stereotypical love story such as Sakurai (Ko Shibazaki) watching shooting stars with Curlly or spending a snowy evening together. Isao Yukisada seems to have a complete sense of shame against this film having a stereotypical literal tense. It is in the passage that this film engenders nervous witty atmosphere when Hideyoshi (Tsutomu Yamazaki), has been depressed by the news that his younger brother died in North Korea. Yukisada intentionally depicts these scenes for Curlly to kick off the exhilarating stereotyped sadness of “zainichi”. The passage from this argument against his father in the taxi, to the fistfight with Hideyoshi in the park is the most eminent part in the point of the clear entertaining “GO”. Even though some people firmly criticize the sadness of “zainichi” in reality is not so simple. Sadao Yukisada doesn’t take it royal to plausibly put a step forward into the other side but avoids stereotypically making “zainichi” segregation a problem by putting the main character into the cinematic surface. In other words, Yukisada absolutely affirms Cully not as a main character of a “zainichi” film but as the one of a youth film.
Kankuro Kubo, who was a writer of “Ikebukuro West Gate Park”, which also made Yosuke Kubozuka attractive with fresh dialogues, also creates a clean fiction taste through the film. Including the entertaining couple, Tsutomu Yamazaki+ Shinobu Otake, Yosuke Kubozuka+ Ko Shibazaki have pure but arresting charms that embody this fiction taste, who are inextricably involved in this film.

INTERVIEW THE ORIGINAL WRITER KAZUKI KANESHIRO
Interviewer YUKO SEKIGUCHI
KAZUKI KANESHIRO/Born in 1968/Korean Japanese/Debuted as a novelist after he won the Rookie of the Modern Novel Award/his first long novel “GO” won the Naoki Prize
I had a interview with Mr. Kazuki Kaneshiro, the writer of the novel “GO”, who was applauded by the readers as well as the people involved in the film “GO”.
Are you a great fighter?
“I’m past 30 so it’s embarrassing to say yes but I used to learn boxing from my father.”
Have you won consecutive victories?
“Not so much. Well I didn’t lose when I was a high school student.”
What’s the key to win a fistfight?
“When I was a high school student, exactly the same as ‘GO’, my name was written on a name list that I was from a Korean junior high school. So I was always caught in a fight. The students in my school were rough and not smart. When I was a first grader, someone died involved in the fistfight in my school. If I didn’t fight, I would be a next target.”
Your judged as dispassionate.
“When I fight, I’m always dispassionate and don’t get excited. Sometimes while I’m reading a novel, I notice this author has no violent experience. Writing a novel by the head can’t convey the real pain but it is tragic. If someone punches you, it’s extremely painful. Natural thing.”
In the novel, there is a high school classmate who asks Sugihara into the group of ‘zainichi’. Is it coming from your experience?
“It was not a high school but a university. I hated these things, so I always refused.”
You didn’t like being in the crowd?
“Yeah I hate it. When I enrolled in a Japanese high school after graduating a North Korean junior high school, I was blamed as a traitor. I also had doubt about the communist education and Kim Jong-il education. Knowing my uncle died in North Korea and seeing my father struggling, I thought the community won’t make people happy.”
But to publicize your idea, you needed to prepare yourself enough, didn’t you?
“When it had been completed, my mother was really worried as I dramatized a novel. Well I wrote this novel while putting lots of irony in it, it seems that I have been treated as a bad guy among zainichi people. But it’s true, so the people who know this will laugh at the scene in which my father pays a bribe.”
To write a personal novel, didn’t you have to face the fact that you don’t want to see?
“Even so, I wanted to write in 20th century. I hoped young people could live in totally different world from 21st century.”
Not for yourself?
“Of course, I had a feeling that I wanted to be famous and rich. I don’t want to put too much meaning on writing, but I hope the young generation won’t worry about their identities. I was lost when I was a high school student. I enrolled in a Japanese high school and changed my nationality from North Korean to Korean but nothing had changed. The literatures, ideological and philosophy books related to zainichi issue that I read at that time were all useless. Especially films were far from reality. Either way, I thought I have introspective-centripetal force but I don’t have centrifugal force to blow a person in lost off far ahead. For this reason, I wanted to write a novel that can blow them away.”
It sounds like everyone who is lost on how they should be can sympathize your story.
“Finally, I want them to go there, not end up in zainichi. I wish this book would evoke a chemical reaction from the body and brain of the readers and give them a small push. Not GO.”
In the 21st century, do you feel anything has concretely changed?
“I don’t know. I’m just happy that my novel turned into a film. Its influence is so huge. I think none of the movies before allowed zainichi people to come out from the theater with confidence. I think it will change after ‘GO’. In that point, I got great results from Mr. Kubozuka(Yosuke) accepting and performing Sugihara’s role!”
Does Sugihara in the film match with your image?
“The way of my writing is converting the images in my head to letters. That’s like novelizing and the first image was close to Sugihara in the film. Mr. Tsutomu Yamazaki and Ms. Shinobu Otake were also just as I imagined, and I was so happy since I am a big fan of them. When I went to see the shootings, Mr. Yamazaki asked me if he could change ‘double punches’ to ‘triple’. So I said, ‘A person who has a strong fighting instinct does 3 or more.’ He then said, ‘ Ok I’ll do 3.’ Without letting Mr. Kubozuka know, he seemed he did triple. That fight scene of 2 guys bears their generations. That’s why the first person is US.”
How’s Mr. Kankuro Kudo’s script? It seems that the thoughts toward the race is less than in the novel.
“I think the film and the novel are different so it’s ok to break away from the original. What was good this time is that Mr. Yukisada and Mr. Kudo said they didn’t know a lot about zainichi. It would be much better than pretending to know and ending up a mess. I have talked to the director but our original ideas were really close. I was thinking of making a rhythmical film such as ‘Good Fellas’ and ‘Trainspotting’ and later I knew Mr. Yukisada was feeling the same.”
Did you want to shoot?
“Yes. Actually, I’ve already asked Mr. Katsumi Yanagisawa, who is a photographer of ‘GO’.”

Source text - Japanese
Translation - English We have various units to show something like quantity and quality.
No matter how big the thing is, we can give it numbers and units.
However, even if the volume of beer consumed in Japan in a year says seven million one hundred thousand kilo litres, only a few people understand how much this is.
In short, even if we could understand it as a number in our head, we can’t see it just as a number portion as the digits increase. In those moments, we might have a better understanding if we write 56 litres for each person on average. However, to realize the whole amount, it’s good to use a familiar example to everyone. For example, if we write it’s 5.7 times the size of Tokyo Dome, it sounds more convincing.
To realize the number means to understand the meaning of the number.
For example, in the case of big corporations, the volume of the papers consumed in a year will be 3 times bigger than Mt. Fuji if we pile them up, which let us realize how big it is and think more about the necessity of saving natural resources.
We learn in school that the birth of the direct ancestor to humans was about one or two hundred thousands years ago. But we don’t feel it as real because it happened so long ago. Our lifespan is less than 100 years, so it is impossible for us to understand such a large number. We spend a day, a month, and a year by a calendar even though sometimes we can’t see it. To understand it, I say I’ll make a earth calendar which shortens 4.6 billion years, the earth’s history, into a length of one year. Then, we will see human history differently. We will realize not only the volume of the quality.
Suppose Jan. 1st is the earth’s birthday, the birthday of human ancestry is on Dec. 31st around 11:30 pm. I had thought the birth of the human race was a long time ago, but how short it is compared to the history of earth!
So we can realize not only the number but the meaning of that number, as to the importance of the things by using a familiar example. If we use a familiar community instead, we can feel differently from the other two examples. For example, we realize that the unemployment rate in Japan has reached 5% by saying 5 people out of 100 don’t have any jobs, but it still seems the things occurred in the number world. So suppose that 1 person out of 20 in this classroom now, we might think better of the meaning of 5 %. Lately, the view of “if the world were a village of 100 people” has become popular, but the reason of attracting people might be the feeling of reality.

Source text - Japanese ゴミが大きな環境問題になりそうだと気がついたのはもう何十年も前のことである。それから私たちの意識、行動はどの程度変わったのだろうか。
Translation - English It was tens of years ago that I noticed rubbish could be a major environmental problem. How have our consciousness and actions changed?
Not limited to rubbish, we feel relieved when the things that we don’t want to see are removed from our sight. It’s similar to children telling their mother there are no dirty clothes but hiding them under the bed. We think it’ll be ok for now if we burn it or bury it. Or could be better if we can forget about it. In reality, it revealed a poisonous dioxin generation caused by incinerating, soil pollution resulting from burying and so on with the increase of rubbish.
We are now seeing what we were trying not to see as what threats our health.
Then, the rubbish mountain gets higher and higher as we started not being able to cope with it. We regretted the social cycle of mass production, mass consumption, and mass waste, and started thinking that we have to create less volume of rubbish no matter which is flammable or inflammable. But how? Some stuff will be needless after use, others will be broken. We can’t stop producing rubbish no matter how luxurious our lives are. So we suggested that we should try reducing the volume of the rubbish that was meant to be disposed by reusing and recycling as a resource. That is the reason for the spread of collecting sorted waste and flea market. We can reduce rubbish by using it in other ways.
There were many ideas like using empty tissue boxes as decorative boxes but the difference between the past and now is that we don’t think reusing is a stingy idea.
Reducing rubbish, reusing it as a natural resource, and using it by someone else or in other ways are called Reduce, Recycling and Reusing in English so we say 3R taking each initial letters.
When thinking about the waste problem, it seems we indicate only three R’s. However, there is the 4th R. This 4th R is actually the hardest even though it seems easy in Japanese society.
It is “Refuse”, to refuse. We might think about a free plastic bag given in a super market or a free book cover given in a book store. But this R includes not buying the wasteful item, which has a side effect of reducing the production of a wasteful product.
So how about Japan?
