Connection Problems
The Waveform Builder application uses the Agilent IO Libraries Suite to find instruments. If, after clicking the Find Instruments button in the Connect Instrument dialog box (available on the View tab), you do not see any instruments listed:
Check that the interface is connected and the instrument is powered-on. Check that the appropriate interface is properly configured using the instrument's front panel (see the instrument's Getting Started Guide for details). If you have not done so, you can use the Agilent Connection Expert to automatically configure interfaces and check instrument communications. This utility is part of the Agilent IO Libraries Suite and is available on the Automation-Ready CD-ROM included with the instrument or by download from www.agilent.com/find/iosuite.
Check to be sure the Agilent IO Libraries Suite is installed on your computer; click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs to see a list of installed programs.
Use Agilent Connection Expert to configure and check the interface(s) and instrument connection. LAN interfaces must be configured in Agilent Connection Expert before using the find operation. The Agilent Connection Expert application is located on the on the Automation-Ready CD-ROM included with the instrument.
Note: During the find operation, Waveform Builder sends a *IDN? query to all instruments on the bus to determine the instrument’s identity. *IDN? is the standard identification query understood by all devices that implement SCPI (Standard Commands for Programming Instruments). The instrument responds with a string containing information about its manufacturer, model, serial number and firmware revision. The *IDN? query is defined by the IEEE 488.2 standard. Since most instruments manufactured in recent years are compliant with IEEE 488.2, the majority of instruments will correctly respond to a *IDN? query. However, some older instruments may produce an error, not respond correctly, or may not respond at all to the *IDN? query.

Note: The Waveform Builder Basic software is provided free of charge and has limited functionality. Many of the features described below are from the full-featured Waveform Builder Pro application. If you are using Waveform Builder Basic, many of the features shown below are disabled (grayed out). To determine whether a feature is available, hover the mouse pointer over the feature to see the tool tip. Features that are available in Waveform Builder Pro only, are labelled as shown here:
