Bio
In becoming a freelance translator, I have come full circle.

When I arrived in San Francisco, California (after moving to the U.S. in the mid-eighties) I was reunited with an American friend who was a freelance translator already. It seemed like such a dream, except for one thing: how do you find work and get paid enough?

Not knowing the answer to that question, I turned to some more promising fields, accounting (passed the CPA-exam, in the old 19.5-hour format) and legal (attended an ABA-approved law school for one year) before switching to computer programming which is what I have been doing for most of my career, before moving to Las Vegas. Here I got a job as an in-house translator that lasted a few years until the local office was closed.

With that background, I was now ready to get started as a freelance translator.

Most of my work involves trademarks with short snippets from disparate fields, ranging from medical treatments and surgical instruments via industrial machinery to drone guidance systems. Each snippet is embedded in some generic language about intended and not intended uses. The emphasis is on what all these various products or services are called and what they do. The challenge is to find the right term, often with limited context.

This suits my personality quite well. I relish the search for some of the more obscure terms and exploring new ideas for how to uncover the meaning of each of them, using ever changing combinations of the tools at my disposal. It has also proven to be quite useful when I translate the other technical materials that make up most of the rest of my workload.

So, if it is important to have the correct terms in the translation, I am a good choice.
