My Education

I graduated from the English Language and Literature Department of Istanbul University in 1990.

My Experience

I have translated thousands of documents from Turkish to English and vice versa on virtually all subjects, from geology reports to expert witness reports, to medical equipment manuals, to loss survey reports, to drug prospectuses, to tender specifications, to court judgments and arbitration awards, for a number of translation agencies in Turkey since 1990.

I have also translated 3 novels, 1 literary study and 1 personal development guide, totalling five books, from English to Turkish for three publishers. Of these books, three were published and two are going to be published soon.

My Philosopy

In my experience, an 'accurate' translation is not enough; a translation must also be 'good'. In my experience, a 'good' translation is the one that (1) matches the source text in terms of the information conveyed by it, and (2) has been written in a clear and plain language that can be easily understood by the reader.

In addition, when it comes to translation, I don't believe in having specialty in a particular field or fields, like law, patents, medicine, etc. What is important is to have a sound knowledge of both languages, because a loss survey report may be dealing with a number of fields, from medicine, to law, to engineering, etc. Or a tender specification may contain a section dealing with a particular type of insurance, like business interruption. Can a translator stop translating upon coming across a paragraph dealing with, say, engineering or insurance because he or she doesn't have specialty in that field? No. If a translator has a sound knowledge of how the language functions, the rest is a thorough research on terminology.
