Uno de los escritores más polémicos de la literatura mexicana actual es, sin duda, Leonardo da Jandra (Chiapas, 1951), un hombre puente, pues ha pasado la mitad de su vida en España y la otra mitad en México. Da Jandra es un literato que tiene un profundo conocimiento de la filosofía; ha hecho un método propio, que se puede leer en su controversial tesis de doctorado titulada Totalidad, seudototalidad y parte (1990; publicado con el seudónimo S.C. Chuco). Entre sus obras más destacadas podemos mencionar sus dos trilogías: Entrecruzamientos (1986, 88 y 90) y la trilogía de la costa: Huatulqueños (1991), Samahua (1997) y La almadraba (2008). Posee dos vertientes: la del ensayo filosófico y la de la narrativa. Entre los libros de filosofía y de ensayo están: La hispanidad: fiesta y rito (2005), La gramática del tiempo (1994) y Filosofía para desencantados (2014). También ha escrito Bajo un sol herido (2001) y Los caprichos de la piel (1996). En la actualidad está realizando novelas de "filosofía ficción", como él las denomina; esta tendencia se puede ver en su libro Distopía (2011), donde las ideas son el tema central de la narración.
Para tener una referencia de Da Jandra, cito lo que dice Guillermo Fadanelli en el prólogo de Filosofía para desencantados: "En México, Leonardo da Jandra no ha tenido los interlo-cutores que merece y su ánimo guerrero ha causado reticencia hacia su persona, y también reserva debido a los constantes cuestionamientos y duras críticas que hace al estado actual de su sociedad". Fadanelli acierta en este tema crucial: "Pareciera que en México estamos acostumbrados a callar y a juzgar desde el anonimato, o cobijados por la sombra de poderes e instituciones: nos atemoriza la palabra si no va acompañada de buenas maneras, y ponderamos más la amabilidad que la sabiduría. Yo he sido su amigo durante muchos años y con él he aprendido que la conversación no se da entre argumentos o entidades ficticias, y sí entre personas que han tenido vida, equivocaciones y carácter".
También podemos rescatar lo que Enrique Vila-Matas señala en el prólogo de La gramáti-ca del tiempo: "Da Jandra, (es) uno de los más sorprendentes escritores que yo he encontrado en el magnífico panorama de las letras mexicanas actuales. [...] Al que un día vi llegar a Ciudad de México con el propósito de cazar y pescar a los malos escritores que se cruzaran en su camino".
Entrecruzamientos es una obra referencial que debe leer todo mexicano para conocer España y todo español para conocer México. Esta trilogía cumple en 2016 tres décadas de su primera edición, y sus ideales utópicos están más vivos que nunca. Asistimos, en más de mil páginas, a la narración de nuestra identidad histórica: desde los orígenes de Occidente (Grecia) y los cimientos prehispánicos (Toltecáyotl) hasta nuestros días. Eugenio, el protagonista, harto de la vida académica regresa a México después de sus estudios en La Sorbonne, y encuentra en Playa Tortuga -en el corazón de la selva huatulqueña de Oaxaca- a un singular personaje: don Ramón, que lo iniciará en el arte de la pesca, la caza y, sobre todo, en el arte del vivir haciendo énfasis en el método para llegar a la "realización plena". Lo más insólito es que esta transmisión del conocimiento no sucede de la forma clásica maestro-discípulo, como en las novelas canónicas; no, en ella un maestro transmite su conocimiento a una pareja: Eugenio y Raga.
Don Ramón, un español enraizado en suelo mexicano, hace de la búsqueda del conocimiento y de la autodeterminación la meta de su vida: "Desde que el hombre tomó conciencia de su ser histórico, la dinámica de su búsqueda vital se ha centrado en dos determinaciones: la primera es lograr la plena autodeterminación; y la segunda es conocer la relacionalidad de las partes con el todo. Varían los métodos y las concepciones sistemáticas, pero el fin de la búsqueda es el mismo, así se trate del sabio platónico, del superhombre nietzscheano o del hombre cósmico".
La consumación del método es el autocontrol: el llegar a tener una voluntad disciplinada para poder alcanzar plena autodeterminación de la vida, o como dirían los sabios nahuas: "tener tu vida en tu mano". Pero adquirir un método en la vida no es tarea fácil, y mucho menos en el mundo en el que nos movemos cotidianamente. Lograr este método supone tener que domar la voluntad y encauzarla. Al principio cuesta enormidades, se sufre por no lograrlo plenamente; pero una vez que lo logras y haces del método y de la vida un todo armónico, como dice don Ramón en la novela, adquieres un dispositivo que controla de manera total tu actuar. Pero para alcanzar esta autodeterminación de la vida es necesario saber metódicamente quiénes somos y de dónde venimos, buscar nuestras raíces, aquello que nos hace actuar como actuamos; en pocas palabras, saber cuáles son nuestras determinaciones como sujetos históricos. En este sentido el mexicano sólo tiene dos opciones: una, practicar con honradez y valentía el consejo socrático del "conócete a ti mismo"; y dos, aceptar que la auténtica cultura mexicana está profundamente enraizada en la cultura europea.
A pesar de que el mexicano posee un legado prehispánico -que debe florecer y dar lo mejor a la cultura mexicana-, el aspecto determinante de su ser, incluyendo tanto defectos como virtudes, es de raíz hispana. No hay duda de que el español de hoy ya no es perezoso y haragán, como decía Unamuno del de su tiempo. El resentimiento histórico de la Generación del 98 perdió toda su virulencia con la espantosa Guerra Civil Española. Y después del oscurecimiento tradicionalista del franquismo se hizo impostergable la "europeización" de España. Sin embargo hay que enfatizar que la cultura mexicana es una antes y otra después del exilio español que vino a vivir a estas tierras. Surgieron universidades, centros de investigación y editoriales. De no haber sido por el franquismo, España no habría expulsado a lo mejor de su intelectualidad a América, y más específica-mente a México. Afirma el personaje Eugenio: "Si la Conquista fue una borrachera imperial con la sangre del conquistado, el exilio fue un acto de amor que hizo de la dualidad conquistador-conquistado una nueva unidad armoniosa y plena. Si la Conquista fue un triunfo de Tanatos sobre Eros, el exilio es la reivindicación de Eros sobre Tanatos. Si la Conquista fue autoritaria y racista, el exilio es igualitario y democrático. Cierto que el costo histórico del exilio fue elevado, pero no lo había sido menos el del México conquistado. Para México el exilio es el regreso del padre derrotado, pero concientizado; la sustitución del griterío arrogante y cavernario por el silencio agradecido y creativo; es, en definitiva, el mítico regreso de la estirpe quetzalcoátlica que viene a superar cuatro siglos de rencor".
Según Raga, el personaje femenino, el problema estriba en que muchos demagogos siguen aferrados a un nacionalismo rencoroso y no quieren que la herida cierre para seguir usufructuando de su poder y medrar del rencor en lugar de buscar lo que nos une. Es tiempo de que busquemos metas comunes no solamente como mexicanos y españoles, sino como seres humanos. Si en vez de académicos, empresarios y políticos que viajan de México a España y viceversa, existiera un verdadero intercambio entre la juventud española y la mexi-cana, si se conocieran más, entonces todo esto cambiaría, y España recibiría la impronta vital de Latinoamérica, que tanta falta le hace para no sucumbir ante la fría y deshumanizada tecnologización eurocéntrica.
La tesis realmente innovadora que se plantea en esta trilogía es la del papel determinante de la mujer en el contexto de la mexicanidad escindida. Don Ramón está convencido de que es la mujer, la mujer inteligente y voluntarizada, más que el hombre abrumado y desencantado, el agente activo que va a consumar la plenitud solilunar de la existencia hispana: "Para una mujer resignada y doméstica, la sociedad machista es un infierno donde el sufrimiento y lo rutinario desplazan a la gozación y lo festivo. Pero para una mujer inteligente y atractiva la sociedad machista es una bendición, su poder es prácticamente ilimitado.
El libro El juicio oral más injusto de la historia (2014) lo escribió Da Jandra después del suceso que estuvo a punto de acabar con su vida y la de su compañera (por oponerse a la construcción de lujosas villas y hoteles en el parque que contribuyeron a declarar, los burócratas del Fondo Nacional para el Turismo los acosaron y destruyeron su casa). En este libro reflexiona sobre el papel de la justicia y, sobre todo, el despotismo con que se ejerce el poder amparado por la legalidad en un mundo en decadencia. A pesar de ello, la consolidación de la utopía es incuestionable; puede cambiar el espacio-tiempo, pero siempre se seguirá anhelando; no es el fin definitivo de una búsqueda, pues mientras exista un pedazo de naturaleza plena e incontaminada el deseo utópico seguirá vivo.
Como mencioné al principio, la figura de Da Jandra es la de un guerrero en perpetua lucha por buscar la verdad ("aunque sepamos que nunca la vamos a alcanzar"). La publicación de sus Diarios, 1999-2012 (2015) nos muestra el duro tránsito que sufrió esta pareja para superar las adversidades y la transformación radical de la razón frente al cosmos: "Definitivamente el ateísmo y el escepticismo son engendros filosóficos de mentes que han vivido de espaldas a las estrellas", dice Da Jandra en Filosofía para desencantados; o mejor aún: "Creer o no creer: en esta libertad radica la esencia del libre albedrío. Cuanto más cree el hombre, más se ata a Dios; cuanto menos cree, más se ata a sí mismo".
A partir de su expulsión, Da Jandra se mudó a una montaña cerca de la ciudad de Oaxaca, y junto con su nueva vida encontró también un nuevo estilo, una forma diferente de narrar: lo que él llama "filosofía ficción", como lo ejemplifica su novela Distopía.
En su más reciente obra filosófica, Da Jandra propone que sustituyamos la dialéctica de los contrarios ( de raíz hegeliano-marxiana) por la de los complementarios: el paso decisivo hacia la cooperación, la solidaridad y la ética para cambiar el rumbo suicida del mundo actual. No apela a la violencia como cambio, sino a la tolerancia y la ética. Y arremete contra lo que él llama la "academiocracia", la "partidocracia", la "sindicocracia", la "teocracia" y la "plutocracia", que parasitan y obstruyen lo verdaderamente importante: la creación de un mundo más amable, menos egoísta y más reflexivo: "Es el intento lo que vale la pena, el empujar con ánimo de rasgar de manera volitiva y permanente la membrana de ignorancia que nos humilla y culpabiliza".
Con su narrativa futurista, Da Jandra propone que la imaginación debe estar abriendo posibles derroteros de comprensión para salir del egocentrismo patológico global. Salir del "yo" para mirar el "nosotros" es ya un paso al sociocentrismo, y éste tiene como meta el cos- mocentrismo, vernos como parte de un todo armonioso: "La filosofía cosmocéntrica se regocija ante la posibilidad descubridora de la ciencia; y se autorrealiza al tender un puente clarificador entre la lógica del mundo material y los valores emanados del espíritu. El ser humano, saludable y racional, anhela la armonía y rechaza la conflictividad. Cuando este anhelo no se cumple, surge la discordia que está en la raíz de toda maldad, y entonces es inviable la convivencia moral. Sólo aceptando la complementación sublimadora de la ciencia y la religión por medio de la filosofía, podrá el ser humano dejar atrás para siempre la conflictividad inherente a la autogratificación egocéntrica. Una vez asumida la conciencia moral ya no hay marcha atrás, y la luz sublimadora de la mente termina integrándonos a un cosmos fascinante e infinito".
Translation - English From utopia to cosmic philosophy
One of the most controversial writers in current Mexican literature is, without a doubt, Leonardo da Jandra (Chiapas, 1951). He is, in a way, a man of two worlds, having spent half his life in Spain and the other half in Mexico. Da Jandra is a man who has a deep knowledge of philosophy and has created his own method, which can be read in his controversial PhD thesis entitled Totality, Pseudototality and Part (1990, published under the pseudonym S.C. Chuco). Among his most outstanding works we find his two trilogies: Entrecruzamientos (1986, 1988, and 1990) and his coastal trilogy consisting of: Huatulqueños (1991), Samahua (1997), and La Almadraba (2008). As a writer, he focuses on two genres: philosophical essays and fiction. Among his philosophical essays and books are: The Spanish Culture: Festivities and Rhythms (2005), The Grammar of Time (1994), and Philosophy for the Disenchanted (2014). He has also written Under a Broken Sun (2001) and The Whims of the Skin (1996). He is currently working on a genre he calls "philosophic fiction." The first fruits of this new endeavor can be found in his book Dystopia (2011), where ideas are the central theme of the narrative.
To get an idea of Da Jandra's work, see Guillermo Fadanelli's prologue for Philosophy for the Disenchanted: "Leonardo da Jandra has not garnered the audience he deserves in his native Mexico. His warrior spirit has been cause for reticence towards himself, and reserve due to his constant questioning and harsh criticism toward today's society." Fadanelli is right on this crucial issue: "It seems that in Mexico, we are accustomed to remaining silent and making judgements from the safety of anonymity, or under the cover of the shadow of power and institutions: words intimidate us if they are not accompanied by good manners, and we ponder kindness over wisdom. I have been his [Da Jandra's] friend for many years, and with him I have learned that conversation does not arise between arguments or fictional entities, but between people who have lived, have made mistakes, and who have character."
We should also mention what Enrique Vila-Matas points out in the prologue to The Grammar of Time: "Da Jandra [is] one of the most amazing writers that I have found in the magnificent panorama of current Mexican literature. [...] One day, I saw him arrive in Mexico City with the distinct purpose of hunting down the bad writers who crossed his path."
Entrecruzamientos is a referential piece of work that all Mexicans must read to know Spain and that all Spaniards must read to know Mexico. In 2016 this trilogy celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of its first edition, and its utopian ideals are more alive than ever. We cover, in more than a thousand pages, our historical identity put into words: from the origins of the West (Greece) and the pre-Hispanic foundations (Toltecáyotl) to the modern era. Eugenio, the main character, fed up with academic life, returns to Mexico after his studies at La Sorbonne, and meets Don Ramón at Playa Tortuga, in the heart of the Huatulco jungle of Oaxaca. Don Ramón is a singular character who initiates Eugenio in the arts of fishing, hunting and, above all, in the art of living, emphasizing the method of reaching "total fulfillment." The most extraordinary fact is that this transmission of knowledge does not happen in the classic master-disciple way, as in canonical novels; no, this time the teacher transmits his knowledge to a couple: Eugenio and Raga.
Don Ramón, a Spaniard who made his living on Mexican soil, searches for knowledge and self-determination as his goal in life: "Ever since man became aware of his historical being, the dynamics of his vital search have focused on two determinations: the first is to achieve full self-determination; and the second is to learn the relationality of the parts with the whole. The methods and the systematic conceptions vary, but the aim of the search is the same. Whether it be the Platonic wise man, the Nietzschean superman, or the cosmic man."
The ultimate goal of the method is self-control: to have a disciplined will in order to achieve full self-determination of life, or as the Nahua wise men would say: "Have your life in your hand." But acquiring a method in life is no easy task, much less in the world in which we move on a daily basis. Achieving this method means having to tame our will and channel it. At first it takes enormous effort, you suffer from not achieving it completely; but once you achieve it and make a harmonious whole out of the method and life, as Don Ramón says in the novel, you acquire a way to totally control your actions. However, in order to achieve this self-determination in life it is necessary to methodically know who we are and where we come from, to search for our roots, for what makes us act the way we act. In short, to know what our determinations are as historical subjects. In this sense, the Mexican has only two options: one, to practice the Socratic advice of "know thyself" with honesty and courage; and two, to accept that the authentic Mexican culture is deeply rooted in European culture.
Although the Mexican has a pre-Hispanic legacy-one which should flourish and offer its best to Mexican culture-the determining aspect of his being, including both defects and virtues, is of Hispanic origin. There is no doubt that today's Spaniard is no longer lazy and slovenly, as Unamuno said of his time. The historical resentment of the Generation of '98 lost all its virulence in the dreadful Spanish Civil War. And after the traditionalist obscuration of the Franco regime, the "Europeanization" of Spain became impossible. However, it must be emphasized that there is a Mexican culture before the Spanish exile and yet another distinct Mexican culture after the exiled Spaniards came to live in these lands. Universities, research centers, and publishing houses popped up. Had it not been for Francoism, Spain would not have expelled its brightest intellectuals to the Americas, more specifically to Mexico. The character Eugenio affirms: "If the Conquest was an imperial drunkenness off the blood of the conquered, the exile was an act of love that made of the conquistador-conquered duality a new harmonious and full union. If the Conquest was a triumph of Thanatos over Eros, the exile is the claim of Eros over Thanatos. If the Conquest was authoritarian and racist, the exile is egalitarian and democratic. It is true that the historical cost of exile was high, but it was no less than the cost of a conquered Mexico. For Mexico, exile is the return of the defeated, but conscientized, father; the substitution of arrogant and cavernous crying for a grateful and creative silence; it is, in short, the mythical return of the Quetzalcoatl lineage that arrives to overcome four centuries of bitterness."
According to Raga, the female character, the problem lies in the fact that many demagogues still cling to a spiteful nationalism and do not want the wound to close in order to continue using their power and to grow out of resentment instead of seeking that which unites us. It is time for us to seek common goals, not only as Mexicans and Spaniards, but as human beings. If instead of academics, businessmen, and politicians traveling from Mexico to Spain and vice versa, there existed a real exchange between the Spanish and Mexican youth, if they knew each other better, then all this would change, and Spain would receive the vital imprint of Latin America, which is so necessary for the country to resist succumbing to the cold and dehumanized Eurocentric technologization.
The truly innovative thesis that is planned in this trilogy is that of the determining role of women in the context of a split Mexicanness. Don Ramón is convinced that it is the woman, the intelligent and voluntarized woman, more than the overwhelmed and disenchanted man, who will be the active agent who will consummate the lunisolar plenitude of Hispanic existence: "For a resigned and domestic woman, the macho society is a hell where suffering and routine displace enjoyment and festiveness. But for an intelligent and attractive woman, the macho society is a blessing, her power is practically unlimited.
The book The Most Unfair Oral Trial in History (2014) was written by Da Jandra after the event that almost ended his life and that of his partner (for opposing the construction of luxurious villas and hotels in the park, thus leading the National Fund for Tourism bureaucrats to harass them and destroy their house). In this book, he reflects on the role of justice and, above all, the despotism with which power is exercised under the protection of legality in a decadent world. Despite this, the consolidation of utopia is unquestionable; it can change space-time, but it will always continue to be desired; it is not the definitive end of a search, for as long as there is a piece of full and uncontaminated nature, utopian desire will remain alive.
As I mentioned at the beginning, the figure of Da Jandra is one of a warrior in perpetual struggle to seek the truth ("although we know that we will never reach it"). The publication of his Journals, 1999-2012 (2015) shows us the hard passage that this couple suffered to overcome the adversities and the radical transformation of the truth against the cosmos: "Undoubtedly, atheism and skepticism are philosophical monstrosities born of minds that have lived with their backs to the stars," says Da Jandra in Philosophy for the Disenchanted, or better yet: "To believe or not to believe: in this freedom lies the essence of free will. The more man believes, the more he attaches himself to God; the less he believes, the more he ties himself."
Upon his expulsion, Da Jandra moved to a mountain near the city of Oaxaca, and along with his new life he also found a new style, a different way of narrating: what he calls "philosophical fiction," as exemplified by his novel Dystopia.
In his most recent philosophical work, Da Jandra proposes that we replace the dialectic of opposites (of Hegelian-Marxian roots) with that of complementary ones: the decisive step towards cooperation, solidarity and ethics to change the suicidal course of our current world. It does not appeal to violence as a change, rather to tolerance and ethics. And he attacks what he calls the "academiocracy," the "partisanocracy," the "unionocracy," the "theocracy" and the "plutocracy," which infect and obstruct that which is truly important: the creation of a kinder, less selfish and more reflective world: "It is the intent that is worthwhile, pushing with the intention of tearing down, in a volitional and permanent way, the veil of ignorance that humiliates and blames us."
With his futuristic narrative, Da Jandra proposes that the imagination must open possible paths of understanding to get out of our global pathological egocentrism. Leaving the "I" to look at the "we" is already a step towards sociocentrism, and this has as its goal cosmocentrism, seeing ourselves as part of a harmonious whole: "Cosmocentric philosophy rejoices at the discovering possibility of science; and is fulfilled by laying a clarifying bridge between the logic of the material world and the values emanating from the spirit. The human being, healthy and rational, longs for harmony and rejects conflict. When this longing is not fulfilled, the discord that is at the root of all evil arises, and then moral coexistence is unfeasible. Only by accepting the sublimating complementation of science and religion through philosophy, can the human being leave behind, forever, the conflict inherent in self-centered self-gratification. Once the moral conscience is assumed, there is no turning back, and the sublimating light of the mind ends up integrating us into a fascinating and infinite cosmos."
