Japanese to English translator based in the UK, specialising in video games, manga and other forms of entertainment. I have four years’ worth of experience in the games industry and am eager to learn more and improve my skills. I studied Japanese at university, have spent time living in Japan and passed the JLPT exam. I am a native speaker of UK English, also comfortable working in US English. My focus is always on providing quality translations that end users can enjoy.

Key Achievements

  • Contributed to the translation of several video games, on platforms such as PC, console, smartphone and arcade machine. These titles have included a range of genres and target audiences, from games for younger children to 18+ content.
  • Worked for an in-house localisation company, primarily as a translator but also taking on editing, LocQA and translation support duties as required. Teamwork was a must, not only between members of my own team but also with other language teams who used our translation as their source text. We also kept up regular communication with our clients through e-mail, query files and video conferences.
  • I have also worked as a proofreader, checking the accuracy and consistency of translations and flagging potential localisation issues. In ensuring correct use of grammar I have been able to deepen my understanding of my native language and of the distinctions between different variants of English.
  • I mainly specialise in fiction but am also comfortable working with various nonfiction formats such as survey responses, history, and tourist information.
  • Provided translation for various manga titles, both single volumes and ongoing series, usually working with online editing platforms.
  • I have experience of translation and editing software, including: MemoQ, SmartCAT, Wordfast Anywhere, Wordbee, Aegisub, MOES, iVerse Comics+.
  • I try to use my time between projects to prepare for future challenges. This may involve research to expand my knowledge base or familiarising myself with different writing styles, for example. In future I hope to gain more experience with forms such as subtitles and prose literature.
  • Before starting to translate professionally I assisted a number of online groups with translation on a voluntary basis. These informal projects included material relating to anime and manga, game text, and magazine articles.
  • Studied Japanese at the School of Oriental and African Studies. In addition to intensive classes in London, I spent six months at Nagoya's Nanzan University, where I was able to further immerse myself in the language and culture of Japan. Since graduating I have passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test at the highest level.
