נוח להאמין שהמדע מתקדם בקביעות לקראת פיענוח צפונות הטבע וכי רוב המדענים מונְחים על ידי רצון לגילוי האמת ומוכנים לנטוש כיוונים מוטעים אם יתקלו בניסויים המפריכים אותם. אבל כמו בכל פעילות אנושית, מתגלות גם בהקשר לפעילות המדעית תופעות סוציולוגיות מרתקות לא פחות מהתופעות המדעיות.
ביולי 2012 התבשרנו כי בניסוי הגדול והיקר ביותר שנעשה ע"י האנושות עד כה, התגלה חלקיק אשר רבים מקווים שהוא חלקיק היגס, אותו חיפשו החוקרים כמעט חמישים שנה. חלק מההודעות על התגלית הדרמטית נוסחו בשפה זהירה ביותר, אולי משום שהתוצאות לא היו לגמרי כמצופה. חלקיק היגס נתפש כאבן בוחן לנכונות המודל הסטנדרטי המקובל היום על פיזיקאי החלקיקים. הוא שילוב של מספר תיאוריות המתארות את תכונות החלקיקים הבסיסיים ביותר מהם בנוי החומר. אמנם עד כה לא נבעו ממנו פיתוחים טכנולוגיים, אך חשיבותו בהבנת חוקי הפיזיקה גדולה ומספר גדול של פרסי נובל בפיזיקה הוענקו בגינו מאז 1979. חלק חשוב במודל הסטנדרטי נקרא QCD (כרומודינמיקה קוונטית). חלק זה פותח לפני יותר מארבעים שנה והציע מהפכה מחשבתית ושפה חדשה.
בשנים הראשונות היו פיזיקאים גדולים שהסתייגו מהמודל. המפורסם מכולם, פול דיראק (Dirac), מאבות תורת הקוואנטים וחתן פרס נובל משנת 1933, אמר בהרצאה שנשא ב-1978 שחלקים מהמודל הסטנדרטי בנויים על נוסחאות לא נכונות, וככל הנראה התכוון במיוחד לנוסחאות שמהן נולד חלקיק היגס.
עם השנים התרבו התוצאות הניסיוניות שאינן ניתנות להסבר ע"י הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, וחלקן אף נראות כעומדות בסתירה גמורה אליה. למרבה הפלא ממצאים אלו לא ריפו את ידיהם של חסידיה והם ממשיכים להגן בעוז על תיאוריה זו.
אחד המתנגדים לתיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית הוא פיזיקאי ישראלי, ד"ר אליהו קומאי, הטוען שתיאוריה זו כוללת טעויות משמעותיות ושפיזיקאים מתעלמים מעשרות תופעות מתועדות היטב שאינן עולות עמה בקנה אחד. קומאי אף הציע מודל חלופי, המציע הסבר לתופעות הבלתי מוסברות, ובה בעת מפחית את מספר ההנחות הנדרשות.
כדי להבין במה מדובר הבה נחזור חמישים שנה לאחור.
גילוי הקווארקים והניסיון להסביר את מבנה הפרוטון
בשנות הששים של המאה העשרים הצטברו נתונים המרמזים שבפרוטון יש שלושה חלקיקים, הקשורים אחד לשני בעוצמה רבה, אשר קיבלו את השם קווארקים. הפיזיקאים ג'יימס ביורקן (Bjorken) וריצ'רד פיינמן (Feynman) פיתחו בנפרד את המתמטיקה הדרושה לחישוב התנהגותם, בהנחה שהם חלקיקים אלמנטרים. תחזיותיהם של של ביורקן ופיינמן אושרו בניסויים שנערכו בסטנפורד לאחר בניית מאיץ חלקיקים עוצמתי חדש (SLAC), שאיפשר למן 1968 חקירת חלקיקים כה זעירים הקשורים בכוח כה חזק, שזכה לא במפתיע לשם "הכוח החזק".
בערך באותה תקופה נתקלו חוקרי החלקיקים בבעיה חמורה. המבנה של מספר חלקיקים מוכּרים, המורכבים משלושה קווארקים זהים, לא התיישב לדעתם עם עקרונות יסודיים. הפיזיקאים באותם ימים סברו (ולמעשה רובם סבורים כך גם היום) ששלושת הקווארקים מסודרים רק במסלול כדורי, המכונה S-Wave, וקיומם של שלושה קווארקים זהים במבנה כזה סותר עקרון יסוד של תורת הקוונטים הידוע בשם עקרון האיסור של פאולי (Pauli).
כדי ליישב את הסתירה הומצאה הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, QCD, תורה פיזיקלית מופלאה המבוססת על תכונה חדשה הנקראת "צבע" *, על "כוח צבע" אשר נחלש ככל שהמרחק בין החלקיקים קטן (בניגוד לכל כוח אחר בטבע), על חלקיקים שאינם יכולים להתקיים באופן עצמאי אם אין להם מספר שווה של שלושה "צבעים", ועוד רעיונות חסרי תקדים בפיזיקה.
* אין שום קשר בין הצבע שאנו רואים למונח צבע בכרומודינמיקה קוואנטית. המונח נבחר משום שהתיאוריה מציעה שלושה סוגי מטענים - המכונים (שרירותית) אדום,ירוק וכחול, באנלוגיה האורות הצבעוניים RGB (והתיאוריה כוללת גם אנטי-צבעים). על פי הכרומודינמיקה הקוואנטית חלקיקים עצמאים חייבים להיות "לבנים" ("חסרי גוון"), כלומר מכילים במידה שווה כל אחד משלושת הצבעים.
אליהו קומאי, שהיה פיזיקאי באוניברסיטה העברית באותן שנים, עסק בעבודת המאסטר שלו בנושא הנקרא "חישובי ויגנר-רקח". יוג'ין ויגנר (Wigner) היה חתן פרס נובל בפיזיקה ויואל רקח, מחשובי הפיזיקאים בישראל, היה חתן פרס ישראל (ראו במסגרת). לקומאי היה ברור, כמו לכל פיזיקאי המבין את תיאוריית ויגנר-רקח, ששלושה חלקיקים זהים קשורים אינם יכולים להתקיים רק במסלול כדורי. כלומר, הנחת היסוד שממנה נבעה הסתירה לכאורה הייתה מוטעית. ידיעותיו בתורת ויגנר-רקח אפשרו לו להסביר את קיומם של החלקיקים ה"סוררים" באמצעות הפיזיקה המקובלת, ללא הזדקקות לכוחות המתנהגים באופן שונה מאד מהכוחות הפיזיקליים המוכּרים.
הכח הגרעיני המסתורי
אחת הבעיות הפתוחות החשובות בפיזיקה היא מתן ההסבר ל"כוח הגרעיני" הפועל בין פרוטונים (המורכבים מקווארקים) ונויטרונים (שגם הם מורכבים מקווארקים ודומים בתכונות רבות לפרוטונים). הכוח הפועל בין פרוטונים לנויטרונים דומה בהתנהגותו באופן מפליא לכוחות הפועלים בין אטומים של גז אציל. קל לראות את הדבר בשני הגרפים שבתמונה 1 אשר מהם נגזרים הכוחות:

בתמונה 1, הדמיון הרב בין הגרפים בולט לעין. למרבה הפלא, בעוד שלגרף אטומי הגזים האצילים יש הסבר טוב בעזרת הכוחות החשמליים הפועלים באטום, לגרף המתאר את הכוח הפועל בין פרוטונים לנויטרונים לא נמצא הסבר עד היום! בעיה זו, בעיית הכוח הגרעיני, היא מהחשובות בתחום פיזיקת החלקיקים ווהכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית אינה נותנת לה תשובה. אפילו פרנק וילצ'ק (Wilczek), שזכה בפרס נובל עבור חלקו בפיתוח תיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, הודה בשנת 2007 במאמר שפירסם בעיתון Nature **, שהכוח הגרעיני נראה כסותר את תיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית! במאמר בנייצ'ר תהה מדוע פרוטון ונויטרון אינם מתאחדים תוך יצירת חלקיק אחד, כפי שמתבקש, לכאורה, מהכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית.
אליהו קומאי ניסה, בתחילת שנות השבעים, לעשות צעד ראשון שהיה אמור להוביל למציאת הסבר לדמיון בין גרף אטומי גזים אצילים לגרף פרוטון ונויטרון במסגרת עבודת הדוקטורט שלו. בעיני רוחו ראה מודל המניח שפרוטונים ונויטרונים בנויים בדומה לאטומים – כלומר, שיש בתוך פרוטונים ונויטרונים גרעין מאסיבי בעל "מטען חזק" חיובי המושך קווארקים בעלי "מטען חזק" שלילי, בדומה לכוחות הפועלים בין מטענים חשמליים. מודל כזה מתבקש עקב הדמיון שבין התנהגות הכוחות ופותר את התעלומה.
כדי לבדוק את המודל שלו חישב קומאי מאסות של שבעה חלקיקים הקרויים מֶזונים, והשווה את התוצאות שקיבל לערכים שנמדדו בניסוי לגביהם. תוצאות החישוב התאימו יפה לשישה מזונים, אך כשלו לחלוטין במזון השביעי, הנקרא A1. לפיכך נטש את הרעיון והשלים את הדוקטורט שלו בנושא אחר. כמעט עשור לאחר מכן, בשנת 1980, נמדדה שוב המאסה של A1 והסתבר שטעות המדידה לגביו בתחילת שנות השבעים הייתה עצומה. אילו היה קומאי יודע מהי המאסה האמיתית של A1 בתחילת שנות השבעים לא היה זונח את המודל שהתחיל לפתח.
אי התאמות ראשונות לתיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית
תיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית פותחה כדי לפתור בעיה שלפי תורת ויגנר-רקח כלל אינה קיימת. אך הבה נבחן אם היא תואמת לניסויים הרבים שנערכו. חשוב להדגיש שתיאוריה פיזיקלית נחשבת לנכונה רק אם היא מתאימה לכל הממצאים הרלבנטים ולא רק לקבוצה מוגבלת שלהם.
בהמשך הניסויים במאיץ החלקיקים SLAC שבסטנפורד נתגלה שסכום המאסות של הקווארקים שבפרוטון קטן משמעותית מהמאסה הכללית שלו. תגלית זו הכתה את הפיזיקאים בתדהמה. היכן מסתתרת בפרוטון המאסה החסרה? המדענים מיהרו לטעון שנושאי כוח הצבע, הגְלוּאוֹנים, נושאים את המאסה החסרה.
אך ביחס לממצאים ניסיוניים רבים אחרים אין הסבר המוסכם על הפיזיקאים.
על פי תיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, גלואונים יכולים ליצור חלקיקים המורכבים מגלואונים בלבד והנקראים Glue Balls. עד כה חלקיקים אלו לא התגלו בשום ניסוי. גם חלקיק בשם דיבריון (Dibaryon), המורכב משישה קווארקים וגלואונים האמור להתקיים על פי הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, לא נצפה עד היום בניסויים שהיו אמורים לגלותו. גם הפנטקווארקים (pentaquarks), המורכבים מארבעה קווארקים ואנטי-קווארק, קיימים לרוע מזלם רק בתיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוואנטית.
בשנות השמונים של המאה העשרים התחילו לפעול מאיצי חלקיקים מטעם EMC ( European Muon Collaboration ), ושם התקבלו שני אפקטים מפורסמים הנחשבים בלתי מוסברים עד היום. אפקטEMC הראשון התגלה בשנת 1983, ועניינו נפח הקווארקים בגרעיני האטום – הממצאים שנתגלו בניסוי עמדו בניגוד בולט לתחזית תיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית. בלי להיכנס לפרטים, ניתן להתרשם מההבדל בין הגרף הימני (חמש תחזיות המבוססות על QCD שפורסמו לפני הניסוי) לגרף השמאלי (תוצאות הניסוי).

האפקט השני של EMC , שהתגלה בשנת 1987, הדהים גם הוא את הפיזיקאים וקיבל את התואר "משבר הסְפּין של הפרוטון". בניסוי התגלה שחלק גדול מהספין של הפרוטון אינו מוסבר על ידי הקווארקים אם הם נעים בתנועה כדורית. הסבר אחד אותו שוקלים הפיזיקאים לאמץ הוא שהגְלוּאונים נושאים את הספין החסר; דרך אחרת לפתור את "משבר הספין של הפרוטון" היא לנטוש את ההנחה שהקווארקים נעים תמיד במסלולים בעלי סימטריה כדורית. אבל הנחה זו היתה המוטיבציה העיקרית להמצאת תיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, QCD, ואם הפיזיקאים יוותרו על ההנחה יהיה עליהם לנמק מדוע היה צורך בתיאוריה מלכתחילה.
על פי חישובי הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית אמור להתקיים חומר הנקרא "חומר קווארקי מוזר". מאמצים רבים הושקעו כדי למצוא אותו ואפילו סלעים שהובאו מהירח נבדקו בתקווה לגלותו. בשנת 1989, לאחר כשלון אחד הניסויים שהיו אמורים להפיק אותו, יצא רוברט ג'פה (Jaffe), אחד המדענים הידועים בתחום, בהצהרה הממחישה את תיסכול חלק מהמדענים מתיאוריית הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית. וכך אמר לכתב בעיתון Science News: "יש לנו תיאוריה אלגנטית הנקראת QCD, שאמורה לתאר את הכוחות בין חלקיקי החומר. אבל אנחנו לא יודעים איך לגרום לה לעבוד. אנחנו לא יודעים אפילו איך לבנות בעזרתה פרוטון מקווארקים".
אגב, החומר הקווארקי המוזר לא התגלה עד היום.
ישנן עוד תוצאות ניסויים רבים שאינן מוסברות על ידי הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית. העיקריות מביניהן הן האינטראקציה החזקה של קרני גאמא עם הקווארקים; הכוח הגרעיני הטֶנזוֹרי שהתגלה ב 1939 ואחראי לקיומו של גרעין המימן הכבד (דאוטריום); חלוקת המטען החשמלי בתוך הנויטרון, ובמיוחד תופעות הקשורות להתנגשויות אלסטיות בין פרוטונים באנרגיות גבוהות. בפיזיקה "רגילה" העלייה בשיעור ההתנגשויות האלסטיות מהווה אינדיקציה חזקה לקיומם של חלקיקים מאסיביים נוספים בתוך הפרוטון, המסוגלים לספוג חבטה רבת עוצמה ועדיין לשמור על מבנה הפרוטון. דבר זה עומד בסתירה גמורה לכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, אשר איננה מאפשרת קיום של עצמים מאסיביים כאלה.
קומאי והמונופולים המגנטיים של דיראק
בשנת 1982, כשקומאי שהה באוניברסיטת מישיגן, נקלע לידיו עיתון בו נכתב שהתגלתה תגלית מרעישה – "מונופול מגנטי". זמן קצר לאחר מכן התברר הממצא כמוטעה, אך קומאי הסתקרן והחל לקרוא חומר בנושא.
המונופול המגנטי הוא חלקיק בעל מטען מגנטי, המתנהג באופן דומה לחלקיק בעל מטען חשמלי. תורת המונופולים המגנטיים פותחה בעיקרה על ידי דיראק, מגדולי הפיזיקאים של המאה העשרים, אשר חשד שמונופולים כאלה נמצאים בפרוטון. חתן אחר של פרס נובל לפיזיקה, ג'וליאן שווינגר (Schwinger), ניסה להסביר בעזרת הנוסחאות של דיראק את מבנה הפרוטון אך ללא הצלחה. מונופולים מגנטיים לא התגלו עד היום.
קומאי הבחין שבמאמר של דיראק משנת 1931 חבויה הנחה סמויה בלתי הכרחית. הוא החליט לבדוק האם ניתן לתאר את המונופולים ללא הנחה זו, ולאחר מספר שבועות עלה בידו לפתח נוסחאות מתאימות. כשהגיע אליהן היכתה בו כברק התובנה שנוסחאות אלו מסבירות לא רק את הכוח הגרעיני אלא גם את האינטראקציה של קרני גאמא עם הקווארקים. קומאי בדק גם האם נוסחאותיו יכולות להסביר את "הכוח הגרעיני הטנזורי", ואכן, הנוסחאות הצליחו להסביר גם תעלומה זו!
נפעם מן התגלית סיפר עליה קומאי לעמית שלו באוניברסיטת מישיגן, אשר הציע לו לערוך סמינר בנושא. לסמינר הגיעו מומחים למונופולים ואלה הפגינו ספקנות ביחס לתגלית. גם מספר עיתונים פיזיקליים התייחסו אליה בספקנות וסירבו לפרסם אותה. היא פורסמה בעיתון לפיזיקה רק כשנה לאחר מכן.
קומאי המשיך לפתח ולפרסם את התיאוריה שלו במשך עשרות שנים ובינואר 2012 היא פורסמה באופן מפורט למדי בכתב העת המקוון לפיזיקה תיאורטית EJTP. התיאוריה של קומאי מספקת הסבר לכל התופעות הבלתי מוסברות שתוארו כאן, לתופעות נוספות שנחשבות לתעלומה, ולתופעות אחרות, אשר ההסבר שניתן להן על ידי QCD נראה מספק.
קומאי הציע ניסוי מכריע שתוצאותיו ישללו בוודאות את התיאוריה שלו – או שישללו את המודל הסטנדרטי. את הרעיון לניסוי פירסם בשנת 2004, אך הוא טרם נערך. הניסוי חייב להתקיים במאיץ חלקיקים מודרני אך הערכת עלותו איננה גבוהה במיוחד.
בשנת 2005 הקים אליהו קומאי אתר אינטרנט משלו במסגרת בית הספר לפיזיקה ואסטרונומיה באוניברסיטת תל אביב. אתר זה נקרא "טעויות בפיזיקה בת זמננו", ובו פורסמו רעיונותיו. בתחילת 2008 הגיע לבית הספר לפיזיקה מכתב מפיזיקאי מפורסם ובו דרישה להסיר את האתר. וכך, תוך פגיעה ברוח המדע, נאלץ קומאי להעביר את האתר למסגרת אחרת באוניברסיטת תל אביב.
לא בודקים
לכאורה, אי התאמת הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית, QCD, לתוצאות ניסוייות וההתאמה של מודל קומאי לממצאים בתחום הכוחות החזקים, מצדיקה פתיחת דיון מדעי נוקב. הרי גם ממצאי הניסויים וגם התיאוריה של קומאי מתועדים היטב בעיתונות המדעית. אם יש בתיאוריה של קומאי שגיאה, מה קל יותר מלהצביע עליה?
אבל מתברר שהחיים אינם כה פשוטים. כדי להבין את יחסה של קהילת פיזיקאי החלקיקים לרעיונות חדשים, צריך לזכור שהבעיות הבלתי פתורות ידועות כבר מעל חמישים שנה: בעיית הכוח הגרעיני ידועה מתחילת שנות השלושים של המאה ה-20; בעיית הכוח הטֶנזורי מוכּרת מסוף שנות השלושים והאינטראקציה של קרני גאמא עם קווארקים – מתחילת שנות השישים. כל המדענים הפעילים היום בתחום חיים עם הבעיות היסודיות הבלתי פתורות האלה; עבורם הן היו תמיד חלק בלתי נפרד מהמציאות המדעית.
לעורכים ולמדענים יש שלל נימוקים מדוע הם נמנעים מלבחון תיאוריות חלופיות. חתן פרס נובל (1999) על תרומתו להבנת הכוחות החלשים, ג'ררד ט'הופט (t'Hooft), כתב לי שיש לו הוכחה מתימטית שרק QCD יכולה להסביר את הכוחות החזקים (אך לא ידוע לי שהוכחה כזו אכן פורסמה). סטיבן ויינברג (Weinberg), חתן פרס נובל (1979) בזכות עבודותיו בתחום התיאוריה האלקטרו-חלשה, התנצל על כך שאין לו זמן לבדוק תיאוריות מתחרות ולדעתו יש לכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית הצלחות רבות איכותיות וכמותיות. ואילו מדען העובד בסרן, כתב לי שגם אם כל התופעות שצוינו למעלה תשארנה ללא הסבר, סביר בעיניו שלעולם לא תיבדק שום תיאוריה חליפית, וניאלץ להסתפק בידיעה שהעולם מסובך והנוסחאות תשארנה לעולם בלתי פתירות אפילו על ידי המחשבים המהירים ביותר.
מומחים ששאלתי ענו באופן מוזר למדי לשאלה מדוע בהתנגשויות בין פרוטונים יש אחוז גבוה של התנגשויות אלסטיות העולה עם אנרגיית ההתנגשות, דבר המהווה עדות ברורה לקיום ליבה מאסיבית בפרוטון, בסתירה לכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית. חתן פרס נובל העדיף להתעלם מהשאלה, ואילו מומחה אחר שפירסם מאות מאמרים בתחום, סיפר לי שהוא שמע ש"מנסים להסביר את הנושא בעזרת פּוֹמֶרוֹנים (Pomerons)". רעיון הפומרונים הומצא לפני הכרומודינמיקה הקוונטית ואיננו חלק ממנה. חוסר העקביות הזה נראה מטריד!
קומאי פירסם מאמר מדעי בשנת 2009 המראה בשלוש דרכים שונות שנוסחאות החלקיק היגס אינן קונסיסטנטיות. למעלה מאלף קוראים הורידו מאמר זה מהאינטרנט, כנראה שרובם פיזיקאים. עד היום לא התקבלה אף לא הסתייגות אחת לטיעונים המובעים במאמר, למרות שלאחר הדיון המקדים, שלוש ההוכחות משתרעות בסך הכל על כעמוד אחד!
בדיקת תורת היחסות הפרטית מול בדיקת המודל הסטנדרטי
ב- 2011 פורסם מאמר שעורר הדים רבים – קבוצת מדענים טענו שניסוי הראה כי הנויטרינו נע מהר יותר ממהירות האור. המאמר היכה גלים משום שמסקנותיו סותרות את אחת התיאוריות המבוססות ביותר בפיזיקה המודרנית – תורת היחסות הפרטית. בהמשך התברר שהמדידות בניסוי היו לקויות, אבל מההתנהלות סביב הממצא השגוי אפשר לדעתי להסיק מסקנות מעניינות.
נראה שהמדענים העוסקים בתורת היחסות מבינים שניסוי הסותר תיאוריה (מבוססת ככל שתהיה) די בו כדי להפריכה. כמו כן נראה שמדענים אלה מבינים שחשוב לאפשר פרסום מאמרים הקוראים תיגר על תיאוריות מקובלות.
נראה שבתחום פיזיקת החלקיקים המצב שונה. מזה עשרות שנים לא פירסמו העיתונים המרכזיים בתחום מאמרים הסותרים את המודל הסטנדרטי. האם מדעני החלקיקים אינם מוכנים לקבל שעשרות ממצאי ניסויים המנוגדים לתחזיות המודל הסטנדרטי מצריכים בחינה מחודשת שלו? האם הם אינם מבינים שחשוב לתת במה למאמרים הסותרים את המודל ולא לחסום פרסומים המטילים ספק באמינותו? האמנם בלתי אפשרי לשכנע את קהילת מדעני החלקיקים להודות בשגיאות התיאורטיות ובסתירות הנסיוניות ובמשמעויותיהן, או לבצע ניסוי מכריע שהוצע, כאשר כל כך הרבה כסף ויוקרה עומדים על הפרק?

אליהו קומאי
ד"ר אליהו קומאי הוא נכדו של רבי אליהו ברוך קומאי, שהיה ראש ישיבת מיר בתחילת המאה העשרים. כשהיה בן 16, עם פרוץ מלחמת העצמאות, עזב את בית הספר והצטרף לקיבוץ, משום שחשב שהחקלאות היא הענף החשוב ביותר למדינה בתחילת דרכה. כצעיר חדור אידיאלים היה חבר במפלגה הקומוניסטית בשנות החמישים והששים. היה גם אלוף ישראל בריצות למרחקים ארוכים, זכה במדלית זהב במכביה החמישית, ובשנת 1982 קבע שיא ישראלי במרתון לגילאי 50 ומעלה. בשנים 1963 עד 1970 למד ועבד באוניברסיטה העברית ומשנת 1970 באוניברסיטת תל אביב.
יואל רקח
יואל (ג'וליו) רקח התחיל את הקריירה שלו באיטליה כעוזרו של אנריקו פרמי (Fermi) ואחר כך השתלם בציריך אצל וולפגאנג פאולי. הוא תרם תגליות חשובות בפיזיקה ובמתמטיקה, עמד בראש חיל המדע וזכה בפרס ישראל בשנת 1958. על שמו קרוי מכון רקח לפיזיקה באוניברסיטה העברית ומכתש רקח הנמצא על הירח. רקח נפטר בשנת 1965 בתאונה טרגית והוא בן 56 בלבד.
תורת ויגנר-רקח
השורשים של המודל הסטנדרטי קשורים קשר עמוק לכך שתיאוריה קריטית להבנת הפיזיקה של הקווארקים אינה נמצאת בידיהם של פיזיקאי החלקיקים. מדוע זה כך?
משוואת שרדינגר (Schrödinger), המהווה אבן יסוד במכניקת הקואנטים, ניתנת לפתרון מיידי עבור מצב שבו יש שני חלקיקים הקשורים זה לזה. אבל עבור מצב שבו יש יותר משני חלקיקים קשורים לא ניתן לקבל פתרון מיידי למשוואת שרדינגר. קבלת פתרון טוב לבעיה זו דורש גם שימוש בתיאוריה המתימטית של ויגנר ורקח, שהיא מורכבת מאוד, ולכן מעדיפים הפיזיקאים להסתפק בקירוב פשוט יותר. וכך, למרות שתורה זו קריטית להבנת מצבם של שלושה קווארקים קשורים, לא נעשה בה שימוש.

Translation - English The Darker Side of Particle Physics
We like to believe that science is constantly progressing towards deciphering the secrets of nature; that most scientists are motivated by a quest for truth and are willing to abandon false theories if they become aware of experimental evidence refuting them. However, as in every other area of human activity, scientific activity is also associated with sociological phenomena that are no less fascinating than are scientific phenomena.
In July 2012, we were told that the largest and most expensive experiment ever undertaken by humankind had revealed a particle that many hope will be identified to be the Higgs particle. Researchers have been searching for the Higgs particle for nearly fifty years. Some of the announcements of this dramatic discovery were presented in very careful terms—perhaps because the results were not quite as expected. The Higgs particle is considered to be a touchstone of the "standard model", the physical theory that is currently accepted by particle physicists. This theory combines several theories about the properties of the elementary particles that matter is comprised of. Even though it has so far generated no technological benefits, it is extremely important for understanding the laws of physics and many Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded as a result since 1979.
An important element of the standard model is known as quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Developed over forty years ago, QCD offered a revolutionary new approach and language. In the early years, some of the greatest physicists had doubts regarding the standard model. The most famous of these was Paul Dirac, one of the fathers of quantum theory and a Nobel laureate in 1933. He said in a lecture in 1978 that parts of the standard model were built on incorrect equations. He was referring to the equations from which the Higgs particle is derived.
As the years went by, a growing number of research experiments were producing results that could not be explained by QCD. Some even seemed to contradict it entirely. Oddly enough, these findings did not deter QCD advocates, who continue to keenly defend this theory.
The Israeli physicist, Dr. Eliyahu Comay, is a QCD opponent. He claims that this theory contains significant errors and physicists ignore numerous, well-documented phenomena that are inconsistent with it. Comay has even proposed an alternative model providing an explanation of the unexplained phenomena while reducing the number of required hypotheses.
To clarify, let's turn our attention back half a century:
The discovery of quarks and the attempt to explain the structure of the proton
In the 1960s, there was an accumulation of data suggesting that the proton contained three forcefully bound particles, and they became known as quarks. Two physicists, James Bjorken and Richard Feynman, independently figured out the mathematics of their behaviour, on the assumption that they were elementary particles. The hypothesis of Bjorken and Feynman was confirmed by experiments conducted in Stanford, after a new and powerful particle accelerator (SLAC) was built. From 1968 on it was possible to examine particles so tiny, so forcefully attracted to one another, that not surprisingly—the force which binds them earned the name of "strong force".
Around the same time, particle researchers encountered a disturbing problem. The structure of three particles, composed of three identical quarks, was inconsistent, in their opinion, with fundamental principles. Physicists at that time believed (as in fact, do most physicists believe today) that the three quarks were arranged in a spherical orbit only, called an S-Wave. They believed that the existence of three identical quarks in such a structure contradicted a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics known as the Pauli Exclusion Principle.
Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) was invented to resolve this contradiction and to explain the three "deviant" particles. QCD is a fantastic physical theory that is based on a new characteristic called "colour"*; on "colour force" that weakens as the distance between the particles is reduced (in contrast to all other force of nature); on particles that are unable to exist freely unless they have an equal number of three "colours"; and on other ideas unprecedented in physics.
* There is no connection between the concepts of colour in vision and in QCD. The term was chosen because the theory proposes three types of charge, known arbitrarily as red, green and blue by analogy with the primary colours of light (RGB), and the theory also includes anti-colours. According to QCD, free particles must be "white" ("colourless"), meaning that they contain each of the three colours in equal measure.
Eliyahu Comay, who was a physicist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem at that time, was working on his Master's thesis using Wigner-Racah calculus. Eugene Wigner received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Yoel Racah, a leading Israeli physicist, was the recipient of the Israel Prize in Exact Sciences (see frame). For Comay, as for any physicist who understands the Wigner-Racah theory, it was clear that three bound particles cannot exist solely in a spherical orbit. In other words, the basic premise at the root of the contradiction appeared to be wrong. His knowledge in Wigner-Racah calculus enabled him to explain the existence of the "deviant" particles by means of conventional physics—without the necessity of introducing any forces that behave very differently from those already known.
The mystery of the nuclear force
One of the greatest unresolved issues in physics is the need to provide an explanation of the "nuclear force" that acts between protons (composed of quarks) and neutrons (composed of quarks and similar in many aspects to protons). The force between protons and neutrons demonstrates remarkably similar behaviour to that of the forces that act between the atoms of noble gases. The patterns of these forces are clearly shown in the two graphs below:

In Figure 1, the similarity between the graphs is clear. Oddly enough, while there is a plausible explanation in the case of the noble gas atoms due to electrical charges working in the atom, the graph indicating such a force between protons and neutrons remains unexplained to this day! This question, the question of nuclear force, is among the most important in particle physics, and QCD does not answer it. Even Frank Wilczek, who won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to the development of quantum chromodynamics, admitted in 2007 in an article he published in the journal Nature**, that nuclear power seems to challenge QCD****! In his article in the journal Nature, he remarked that the proton and the neutron do not unite to create a single particle, as QCD apparently requires.

In the early ‘70s, while working on his doctoral thesis, Eliyahu Comay took a first tentative step towards explaining the similarity between the noble gas atom graph and the proton/neutron graph. He postulated a model built on the premise that protons and neutrons are structured like atoms—meaning that protons and neutrons have massive nucleuses with a positive "strong charge" that attracts quarks with negative "strong charges". This is similar to the forces that act between electrical charges. Such a model seems the obvious answer due to the similarity between the behaviours of the forces, and it solves the mystery.
To test his model, Comay mathematically calculated the mass of seven particles called mesons, and compared his results with the experimentally measured values for them. His calculations were consistent with the experimental measurements for six mesons, but completely inconsistent for the seventh, known as A1. So he abandoned the idea and completed his doctorate on another topic. Almost a decade later, in 1980, the mass of the A1 meson was measured again revealing a huge error in its measurement in the early ’70s. Had Comay known at the beginning of the early ‘70s the true value of the A1 mass, he would not have abandoned the model he had started developing.
Initial discrepancies in quantum chromodynamics
Quantum chromodynamics was developed to solve a problem, which according to the Wigner-Racah approach does not exist. But let's examine its compatibility with the many experiments performed. It is important to emphasise that a theory of physics is considered valid only if supported by all relevant findings and not by only a limited group of them.
Further to the experiments in the particle accelerator SLAC in Stanford, it was discovered that the total quark mass within a proton is significantly less than its overall mass. This finding bewildered the physicists. Where is the missing proton mass hidden? They quickly attributed the missing mass to the colour-bearing forces known as gluons. However, physicists remain speechless about many other experimental findings.
According to QCD, gluons can produce particles comprised of only gluons, known as Glue Balls. So far, no such particles have been found in any experiment. Similarly, a particle known as a dibaryon, consisting of six quarks and gluons, which ought to exist according to QCD, has not been observed thus far in any experiment designed to reveal it. Even pentaquarks, made up of four quarks and an anti-quark, exist only in QCD theory.
In the 1980s, the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) activated particle accelerators, where two famous effects were discovered that remain unexplained. The first EMC effect, discovered in 1983, relates to the volume of quarks in the atoms’ nucleuses. The findings revealed by the experiment deviated dramatically from QCD-based predictions. Without going into detail, the difference can be seen by comparing the two graphs below: The left graph shows five QCD-based predictions published prior to the experiment, and the graph on the right shows the results of the experiment.

The second EMC effect, discovered in 1987, also shocked the physicists and became known as the "proton spin crisis"***. In the course of an experiment, it was found that a large portion of the spin of the proton cannot be explained by the quarks if they have spherical motion. One explanation that physicists are considering adopting is that the missing spin may be attributed to the gluons. Another possible solution to the "proton spin crisis" is to abandon the premise that quarks always move in an orbit with spherical symmetry. However, this premise was the primary justification for the invention of QCD, and if physicists will relinquish it, they will be obliged to explain why the theory was necessary in the first place.

According to QCD-based calculations, there ought to exist a substance called "strange quark matter". Major research efforts, even extending to the analysis of lunar rock samples, were invested in the hope of confirming its existence. In 1989, after the failure of one such experiment, Robert Jaffe, a known expert in the field, came out with a statement exposing the frustration of some scientists regarding QCD. This is what he told the editor of the journal Science News: “We have this elegant theory of quantum chromodynamics, which is supposed to describe the binding of the fundamental constituents of all matter, but we don’t know how to make it work. We can’t even do something as basic as building protons out of quarks.” Incidentally, strange quark matter remains undetected.
Many more experiments have generated results for which QCD offers no explanation. These include mainly the strong interaction of gamma rays with quarks; the nuclear tensor force that was discovered in 1939 and is responsible for the existence of the nucleus of heavy hydrogen (deuterium); the distribution of the electric charge within the neutron; and particularly, phenomena related to elastic collisions between high-energy protons. In “conventional” physics, an increase in elastic collision rate indicates the existence of additional massive particles inside the proton that are capable of absorbing a powerful impact while still maintaining the proton’s structure. This entirely contradicts QCD, which denies the existence of such massive objects.
Comay and Dirac's magnetic monopoles
In 1982, when Comay was staying at the University of Michigan, he happened to see a press announcement of an amazing new discovery—the discovery of the "magnetic monopole". Shortly after that, it became clear that the claim was unfounded, but it had sparked Comay's curiosity and he started reading material on the subject.
The magnetic monopole is a particle with a magnetic charge that behaves similarly to an electrically charged particle. The theory of magnetic monopoles was developed mainly by Dirac, one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, who suspected that such monopoles existed within a proton. Julian Schwinger, who also received the Nobel Prize in Physics, tried to use Dirac's equations to describe the proton structure but did not succeed. Dirac's magnetic monopoles have not been found until this day.
Comay noted that Dirac's 1931 article masked a hidden and unnecessary premise. He decided to see if one could describe the monopoles without this premise; a few weeks later he managed to develop suitable equations. When he examined these equations, a flash of insight struck him as he realised that they not only explained the nuclear force; they also explained the interaction of gamma rays with quarks. Comay also checked whether the same equations could be applied to explain the nuclear tensor force, and indeed, the equations served to solve that mystery, too!
Thrilled by the discovery, Comay recounted it to his University of Michigan colleague, who suggested he give a seminar on the subject. The event was attended by monopole experts, who exhibited scepticism regarding his discovery. A number of physics journals treated the concept with suspicion and refused to publicise the discovery. It was not until the following year that it was published in a physics journal.
Comay continued to develop and publicise his theory for decades. In January 2012, it appeared in detail in the Electronic Journal of Theoretical Physics (EJTP). Comay's theory resolves all the unexplained phenomena described here, some other seemingly mysterious phenomena, and some that QCD seems to explain.
Comay offered (to conduct) a critical experiment, the results of which would reject either his theory or the standard model completely. The idea of the experiment was published in 2004, but it has not yet been conducted. Although it requires the use of a modern particle accelerator, the estimated cost of setting it up is not excessively high.
In 2005, Eliyahu Comay created his own website within the framework of the School of Physics and Astronomy at Tel Aviv University. The name of the website is “Theoretical Errors in Contemporary Physics”. He publicised his ideas on this website, and at the beginning of 2008, a letter arrived at the school from a famous physicist demanding the removal of the site. And so, in violation of the spirit of science, Comay was forced to transfer the site to a different Tel Aviv University framework.
Unverified
Seemingly the conflict between QCD-based theories and the relevant experimental results, and the compatibility of the Comay model with findings in the field of strong forces, are sufficient justification for launching an in-depth scientific debate of the subject. After all, both experimental findings and Comay's theory are well documented in the scientific press. If Comay's theory is wrong, what could be easier than to point that out?
But, as it turns out, life is not so simple. In order to understand the attitude of the community of particle physicists to new ideas, we need to remember that many of the open questions have remained unresolved now for more than half a century: the problem of the nuclear force has been known since the early 1930s; the tensor force problem dates back to the late ’30s; and the interaction of gamma rays with quarks to the beginning of the ’60s. Every scientist currently active in the field lives with these fundamental, unresolved problems. For them, they have always been an integral part of the scientific reality.
Editors and scientists have a host of reasons for avoiding the examination of alternative theories. Gerard t'Hooft, who won the Nobel Prize in 1999 for his contributions to an understanding of weak forces, wrote to me that he had proved mathematically that only QCD can explain the strong forces (although I am not aware of the actual publication of such proof). Steven Weinberg, the 1979 Nobel Prize winner for his work on the electroweak theory, apologised for his lack of available time to test competing theories, but expressed the opinion that QCD has many quantitative and qualitative successes. I even received a letter from a scientist working at CERN, who stated that even if all the phenomena listed above remain unexplained, it was probable in his opinion that alternative theories would never be investigated; we would have no choice but to accept the fact that the world is complex and its equations will always remain intractable even by the fastest computers.
When I consulted experts, I received rather odd responses to my question of why, when protons collide, there is a high incidence of elastic collisions, and the percentage rises with the collision energy. This is clear evidence of the existence of a core proton mass, contradicting QCD. A Nobel Prize winner chose to ignore the question, and another expert who has published hundreds of articles in the field, told me he heard about efforts to explain the issue with pomerons. The concept of pomerons pre-dates the invention of QCD, and was not included in it. This inconsistency is troubling.
In 2009, Comay published a scientific paper exposing in three different ways the inconsistency of the Higgs particle equations. Over a thousand readers downloaded the article from the Internet, probably most of them physicists. Not a single expression of reservation has yet been received regarding the claims presented in the article, even though after the preliminary discussion, the three pieces of evidence occupy but a single page!
Special relativity vs. the standard model
In 2011, an article appeared that caused a considerable stir—a group of scientists claimed that an experiment showed that the neutrino moves faster than the speed of light. The article made waves because its conclusions refute one of the most established theories of modern physics—that of special relativity. Later, it was found that the measurements in the experiment were flawed, but one may draw some interesting conclusions, in my opinion, from the behavioural responses to the wrong findings.
It seems that scientists dealing with the theory of special relativity understand that the fact that an experiment contradicts a theory is sufficient grounds for refuting the theory. Furthermore, these scientists understand the importance of allowing the publication of articles challenging accepted theories.
The situation seems to be different in the field of particle physics. For decades, none of the leading scientific journals in the field published any articles that contradicted the standard model. Are particle physics scientists not yet ready to accept reality—that numerous experiments yielding results conflicting with the predictions of the standard model— make its re-examination essential? Do they not realise the importance of providing a platform for articles that challenge the model, without blocking articles that cast doubt on its credibility?
Is it impossible to persuade the community of particle physicists to admit theoretical errors in their theories, anomalies in their experiments and their interpretation, or to perform a decisive experiment as suggested, when so much money and prestige are at stake?
I would not be surprised if the standard model of particle physics is seen in a new light by the future scientific community. Our younger readers are invited to save these words. Several decades from now, I think they will enjoy re-reading them.

The author, Ofer Comay, is the son of Eliyahu Comay, and a mathematician and former winner of the Mathematical Olympics at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Ofer is an Israeli champion in solving chess problems and a winner of several world championships in that field. Eliyahu Comay
Dr. Eliyahu Comay is the grandson of Rabbi Eliyahu Baruch Comay, who headed the Mir Yeshiva at the beginning of the twentieth century. At the age of 16, with the outbreak of the Israeli War of Independence, Eliyahu left school and joined a kibbutz, because he thought agriculture was the most important sector of the new country. As an idealistic youth, he belonged to the Communist Party in the 1950s and ‘60s. He was a champion Israeli long-distance runner, winning a gold medal in the fifth Maccabiah Games, and in 1982 set an Israeli record in the marathon for the 50 and above age group. Between 1963 and 1970, he studied and worked at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and from 1970—at the University of Tel Aviv. Among his published works, he solved the "hidden momentum" paradox which bothered physicists for 28 years, and 25 years ago he predicted that the electric Aharonov-Bohm effect would not be found.
Yoel Racah
Yoel (Giulio) Racah began his career in Italy as assistant to Enrico Fermi, and went on to study in Zurich under Wolfgang Pauli. He made important discoveries in physics and mathematics, headed the Science Corps for the IDF and received the Israel Prize in exact science in 1958. The Racah Institute of Physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is named after him, as is the Racah crater on the moon. Racah died in 1965 in a tragic accident at the age of only 56.
The Wigner-Racah Theory
The roots of the standard model are deeply connected to a critical concept for understanding quark physics, and one that is not in the hands of a particle physicist. Why is that?
The Schrödinger equation, which constitutes a cornerstone of quantum mechanics, describes a situation where there are two bound particles. However, for a case where there are more than two bound particles, the Schrödinger equation is not suitable. To obtain a good solution to this problem also requires the application of Wigner-Racah calculus. Wigner-Racah calculus is very complex, so physicists prefer to use a "simplified estimate." קנת סוויג הוא נוסע מתמיד בין ניו=יורק לתל=אביב. למרות שלמשפחתו יש בישראל כמה נכסי מקרקעין, העניין העיקרי שלו בנו איננו עסקי. כמי שמצהיר על עצמו כיהודי חם הקשור בעבותות למדינת ישראל, הוא מרבה להגיע לכאן כדי לבדוק מה שלומו של הבית היהודי.

כידוע, מדובר בסוגייה כבדת משקל ועמוסת אמוציות במשפחות עתירות נכסים. רק מעטות מצאו את הנוסחא הנכונה שאפשרה לבצע מהלך כזה ללא שפיכות דמים רגשית, כלומר: מבלי לאבד בדרך גם את הזיקה האישית והקירבה המשפחתית. לא פעם קרבות פנים=משפחתיים הסתיימו בפיצול עסקי, וגרוע מזה – בניתוק יחסים כואב בין אחים ודודנים.
תוך 24 שעות
קנת סוויג הוא נכדו של בנג'מין סוויג, מייסדה של אימפריית נדל"ן ומלונאות אמריקאית ידועה. מאז הקים וניהל אותה סבו היא גדלה והתרחבה מאוד, אבל השליטה נותרה תמיד משפחתית.
סוויג הסב, שגדל בבוסטון, נכנס לעסקי הנדל"ן ב=1936. תחילה קנה ומכר נכסים אך עד מהרה גדל העסק לחברת נדל"ן גדולה. החברה, שהחלה את דרכה בחוף המערבי, יצרה במהלך השנים נוכחות בכמה וכמה שווקים לרוחבה של אמריקה, בעיקר בניו=יורק, תוך שהיא מטביעה חותם על שוק הנדל"ן האמריקני וקונה לעצמה שם כגוף המנהל ומשקיע בנדל"ן מסחריים ומלונאיים. העיקרון של רכישת נכסים, השקעה בהם ומכירתם ליווה את החברה שנים רבות.

החברה הפכה ליזמית שניהלה ופיתחה בנייני משרדים ומרכזים מסחריים בכל ארה"ב. ב=1998, כאשר מחירי המלונות התקרבו לשיאם, ביצעה החברה מהלך אסטרטגי ומכרה את מרבית אחזקותיה בבתי המלון ועסקי ניהול מלונות והתמקדה מחדש בנדל"ן. כיום מחזיקה החברה בלא פחות מ=9 מיליון מ"ר של נדל"ן מובחרים, הכוללים בניני משרדים ומרכזים מסחריים לצד נדל"ן למגורים, שני שלישים מתוכם בניו=יורק.
למרבה המזל, המשבר הכלכלי של 2008 כמעט ולא פגע בחברה. קנת סוויג מייחס זאת בין היתר לעובדה שהחברה לא היתה ממונפת אלא ביצעה השקעות שמרניות וחכמות. בנוסף, צבר המזומנים שלה אפשר לה לבצע רכישה גדולה של נכסים במחירי מציאה בשלוש השנים האחרונות.
לאחר מות הסב=המייסד חולקה הקיסרות מבחינה ניהולית בין אביו של קנת, מל סוויג, שניהל את חטיבת הנדל"ן, לבין דודו, ריצ'רד סוויג, שניהל את חטיבת המלונאות. היחסים ביניהם היו טובים ברמה האישית וסבירים ברמה העסקית, מה שסייע לחברה לשגשג.
מבחינה משפטית הבעלות חולקה בין האחים לבין אחותם, דודתו של קנת סוויג, תוך כניסה הדרגתית של בני הדור השלישי לתמונת הניהול. אך עוד טרם הסתלקותם של בני הדור השני, החלו מתרוצצות מחשבות שונות על הדרך שבה תנוהל החברה עם המעבר לדור הבא. אם בדור השני היה מדובר על שלושה אחים, ששניים מהם פעילים, בדור השלישי כבר נרשמו עשרה בני דודים, שלפחות מחציתם היו פעילים בחברה (שניים מהם נפטרו במהלך הדרך – אחיו התאום ואחותו של קנת). השאלה המרכזית שעמדה בפניהם היתה איך לעבוד ביחד מבלי לפרק את החבילה המשפחתית, וקנת יודע לספר שהם דנו בכך לא מעט. כבר אז, באותן שיחות, החלו בני הדודים להניח את היסודות למהלכים העתידיים, אם כי ללא סיוע של אנשי מקצוע מתמחים.

לא ברור לגמרי מה שכנע לבסוף את הדוד לוותר, אך אין ספק שהפורמט החדש שהציעו בני הדודים נועד ליצור מכניזם חדש של קבלת החלטות בחברה. עד לשינוי, תהליך זה נשען על שלושה גושים שווים, כשיקוף נאמן של בני הדור השני. הללו חסמו זה את זה לא פעם ומנעו פריצת דרך עסקית.

במקביל, הוקמה מועצת מנהלים חדשה שבה ישבו הדוד ריצ'רד – שנפטר שנתיים מאוחר יותר – ובני הדור השלישי, כאשר אחד מבני הדודים שימש כיו"ר ברוטציה. שולבו בה אנשי מקצוע, מקבלי שכר, מחוץ למשפחה, לצד ועדות דירקטוריון מתמחות.
שבירת התבנית המשפחתית הישנה סללה את הדרך לשינוי, אך ההתחלה, משחזר קנת, לא היתה קלה. העניינים התנהלו בכבדות והיו לא מעט חילוקי דעות. חלק מבני הדודים, שלא היו מורגלים בחשיבה אינדיווידואלית שאמורה לייצר החלטות רוב, או כאלה שלא גילו עניין בחברה והיו חסרים ידע מקצועי, היססו. חלקם התקשו להשתחרר מהתבנית המשפחתית הישנה, והיו גם כאלה שבכלל תמכו במכירת העסק וחלוקת ההון המשפחתי. אבל הזמן עשה את שלו, כמו גם ההכרה שכולם יקומו או יפלו יחד.

דינמיקה קולקטיבית

לשלב את הדור הרביעי

Kent Swig is a frequent flyer between New York and Tel Aviv. Although his family has a number of real estate assets in Israel, his main interest here is not commercial. As a person who defines himself as a caring Jew with a special bond to the State of Israel, he comes over often to see how the Jewish Home is doing.
But this time Swig's visit is not only about Jewish issues, it is also about more practical matters. As a guest lecturer at the second “Family Business” conference that took place in Tel Aviv last June, he came to speak about the family and business side of his biography. His main aim was to share with others the experience he gained in leading the complicated process of transferring control of the real estate company established by his grandfather.
This is an issue known to be difficult and emotional for wealthy families. Few have found the right equation to allow such a process to take place without emotional blood spilling, or without losing personal affinities and family ties along the way. Oftentimes intra-family fighting ends in split businesses, and even worse – in painful broken relations between siblings and cousins.
Within 24 Hours
Kent Swig is the grandson of Benjamin Swig, founder of the well-known American real estate and hotel empire. Ever since it was established and managed by his grandfather, the empire has greatly expanded, but control has always remained within the family.
Swig the grandfather, who grew up in Boston, entered the real estate business in 1936. He started by buying and selling properties, but the business quickly grew into a large real estate company. The company, which started out on the West Coast, created a presence over the years in a number of markets across the United States, primarily in New York while leaving its mark on the United States real estate market and making its name as a company that manages and invests in commercial and hotel real estate. The idea of purchasing properties, investing in them and then selling them, was a part of this business for many years.
In San Francisco, the Company purchased the well-known Fairmont hotel chain immediately following World War II. The company then began to develop and purchase hotels in Chicago, New Orleans, Dallas, Denver, San Jose, New York (including the New York Plaza that was eventually sold to Yitzhak Tshuva), and Boston. At its peak, the company had control over more than 50 hotels. The company's flagship hotel, the Fairmont San Francisco, was featured a number of times in Hollywood movies and television shows.
The company became involved in the management and development of office buildings and commercial centers across the United States. In 1998, when hotel prices were reaching their peak, the company made a strategic move and sold most of its holdings in hotels and hotel management businesses, and focused on real estate again. Today, the company possesses no less than 9 million square meters of choice real estate, including office buildings and commercial centers as well as residential real estate, two thirds of which are located in New York.
Luckily, the 2008 financial crisis hardly affected the company. Kent Swig attributes this to the fact that the company was not leveraged; rather, it made conservative and intelligent investments. In addition, the company's cash reserves allowed it to make large property purchases at bargain prices over the last three years.
Following the grandfather-founder's death, the empire was divided from a managerial perspective between Kent's father Mel Swig, who managed the real estate division, and Kent's uncle Richard Swig, who managed the hotel division. Relations between the two were good on a personal level and reasonable on a business level, which helped the company to prosper.
From a legal perspective, ownership was divided between the brothers and their sister, Kent's aunt, with the gradual entrance of members of the third generation to the managerial picture. However, before the withdrawal of the second generation, thoughts began to race around regarding the way in which the company should be managed with the transition to the next generation. While the second generation consisted of three siblings, two of whom were active, the third generation already included ten cousins, of whom at least half were active in the company (and of whom two died along the way – Kent's twin brother, and his sister). The main concern the family had was how to work together without dismantling the family unit, and Kent openly talks about how they discussed this frequently. Already then, in those same discussions, the cousins began to lay the groundwork for future processes, although without professional assistance.
The turning point came with the death of Kent's father in 1993, followed by the death of Kent's aunt Betty. His uncle Richard was the only one remaining of the second generation — the children of the grandfather–founder. The deaths constituted a sign that they should hold a decisive family meeting, during which pressure was placed on the uncle to transfer control of the company to his children, and thereby complete the inter-generational transfer from the second to the third generation.
Kent, who conceived the idea of reorganizing the company and who was one of its promoters, admits that it was not easy to convince his headstrong uncle. Richard Swig, who was very active in the Jewish community and a well-known philanthropist, at first refused to make the changes while he was still living, but the third generation stood their ground and finally won. Within 24 hours the process was completed, after it was decided that no person would leave the room until the new organizational structure was determined.
Birthright
It is not completely clear what finally convinced the uncle to give in, but there is no doubt that the new format proposed by the cousins was intended to create an entirely new mechanism for decision-making within the company. Until the change, this process relied on three equal blocks, reflecting the members of the second generation. These would frequently block one another and prevent business breakthroughs.
With the new format, new protocols were adopted, the most important of which was that each cousin would have an equal vote, allowing substantive decisions to be made. In this way the old model was broken, a model that might have led the company into a dead end. Despite the fact that Kent was the youngest of the cousins, he took a decisive role in the process. His goal was for each person to be able to make a professional decision without being bound by the family edict.
This time, the process was performed with the involvement of professionals, mainly lawyers and accountants. Meetings were organized with professionals, and an in-depth analysis was performed that ultimately led to the formulation of a new family constitution based on the new model.
The first decision was that they would all, without exception, resign from their executive posts at the company, and hire an external CEO and professional management, while creating a modern corporate governance. The main perception was that each of the cousins has an equal right to the company based simply on their being the grandchildren of the founding grandfather. This right – Kent Swig stresses – does not depend on their abilities, education, or even on the interest they show in the company, as it is a birthright.
At the same time, a new board of directors was formed, which was comprised of the uncle (Richard, who died two years later) and the members of the third generation with each cousin serving as chairperson in rotation. Professional, salaried directors who were not members of the family were also incorporated, alongside professional board committees.
The shattering of the old family model paved the way for change, however the beginning was not easy, remembers Kent. Matters did not go easily and there were quite a number of disagreements. Some of the cousins, who were not used to thinking individually with the intention of making majority decisions, or those who did not show interest in the company and lacked professional knowledge, were hesitant. Some found it difficult to let the old family model go, and some even wanted to sell the business and divide the family fortune. However, time brought acceptance and the recognition that everyone would rise or fall together.
Although the process was not without concerns, it was free of personal animosity and was done without bitterness. In one of the deliberations, Kent even voted with his cousin simply to stress the need for cross-family decision-making, and he thereby demonstrated the importance of collective interest over personal interest. The bottom line was that after a reasonable period of time to adapt, the process became more harmonious and the dynamics changed for the better.
All this occurred with the United States real estate crisis of the early 90s in the background, which made the question of continuing together or splitting up clearer. Should they divide the wealth now, or continue to grow together? Looking back, it seems like the decision to remain together and thus maintain the advantages of size and preserve the family wealth was critical and was one of the factors that helped the company survive the crisis and the crises that came after. In fact, according to Kent, this was one of the keys to the survival of the company during the great financial crisis of 2008.
Collective Dynamic
The third component of the historic process, continues Kent, was striving towards consensus decision-making. Despite the fact that after the company was reorganized, decisions could be made both theoretically and practically on a majority and minority basis, attempts were always made to achieve unanimous decisions.
Kent tells of one dramatic meeting in which the strategic decision of which financial partner to select was being discussed. After the first round it became clear that the votes were tied, and that one of the cousins had the deciding vote. She, however, refused to make the decision. Pressure was put on her, and finally the decision was made with a majority of five to four. The meeting could theoretically have ended there, but Kent stopped the process and demanded that the meeting be re-convened until both sides were convinced and a new decision was reached. The unanimous decision, although involving certain compromises, was more than a symbolic issue. It allowed everyone to be partners in the decision. It also sent a strong message to the market, including the residents, suppliers, banks, and other interest-holders, that this was a united family company.
This allows Kent to claim enthusiastically that collective work is the key to business success: “We proved to everyone that this thing called collective leadership is possible and practicable. We succeeded in preserving the vision and spirit of the founders, while stepping beyond a paralyzing structure and moving towards a more dynamic one.”
Since that meeting, says Kent, all decisions have been made unanimously. After 20 years of success and avoidance of the threatening real estate crises that have hit the United States every decade, even the skeptics in the family understand that the collective structure creates business strength that is lacking in other family companies. However, the downside to collective work and unanimous decision-making is that it takes time. Kent admits that it takes a lot of work and effort to listen to everyone and to include all the cousins in the process. The idea is that we don't give up on anyone, and to whoever hesitates, we say, “Take your time, study what you need to study, and only then make a decision.”
Integrating the Fourth Generation
Despite the success it has had so far, it is not clear to what extent the equation employed by Kent Swig and his generation is applicable to other family companies. Although he himself is convinced that there is a strong message here for the business community and a model worth emulating, it is worthwhile remembering that ego, jealousy, hatred and emotional issues are significant among wealthy families. Informed and substantive discussion regarding the fate of the family business is not always guaranteed, as each believes themselves more capable of good management than the others.
Indeed, the Swig Corporation is currently involved in integrating the fourth generation, the oldest of whom is 40 years old. It is a very complex matter due to natural increase. It involves no less than 25 family members, and the fifth generation is already on its way. They too, will without doubt demand their piece of the family pie.
Matters are already in the process of formation, and the members of the fourth generation do not have a free ticket into management. They need to prove themselves and meet certain criteria; however, Kent likes to point out the difference between the process that he and the members of his generation experienced, and the process their children are experiencing: “At that time we were told that only when our parents die would we possibly be able to take over the management reins. It was a family joke. But seriously, the process we went through was really cumbersome. There was a lack of information, there was no clarity, and, most importantly, there was no mutual trust. Now the process is transparent, orderly and structured, and I am very enthusiastic and excited about it. I help the younger generation as much as I can, and I serve as a non-salaried advisor. Although this requires me to go on countless New York–San Francisco trips, I am committed to the process, and I consider the third generation to be an available managerial resource for the next generation. We do this as best we can, under no conditions, and this is an advantage.”
In the meantime, the Swig family is considering forming a family fund that will enable anyone who wants to exit the family business to do so, and the remaining family members to purchase the leaving member’s share. Kent is optimistic, and claims that the members of the fourth generation want continuity, and that the family constitution is a living and breathing document that can withstand the challenge of future inter-generational transfers.

Principles of Successful Joint Management
Kent Swig lists the main principles that, in his opinion, allow for a successful process of collective decision-making in a family business:
1. Recognition of the individual rights of each cousin on the board, not as a result of each individual’s immediate family association but due to their birthright and their being a part of the group as a whole. Translating the power of the individual to a winning group process.
2. Accessible information for everyone, including for those who are not professionals in business administration and real estate. Full transparency and clarity of the business process.
3. Participation. A structure in which everyone understands the conduct of corporate affairs and everyone has a part in creating the corporate structure, with all sharing the desire to allow the business to work. Everyone is involved and has complete information.
4. Spouses are not allowed to sit on the board.
5. Everyone works at the pace of the slowest cousin.
6. Everyone is committed to participate in decision making.
7. Cultivation of mutual trust and a favorable and secure atmosphere for sharing opinions. Every person’s voice will be heard in the process.
8. Strategic planning is shared by all and is carried out in an open environment.
9. Involvement of external specialists who aid in the family business processes.
10. Creation of a family constitution that is a living and breathing document.

A Bold Jew
Kent’s great-grandfather Simon Swig came to the United States from Lithuania in 1870, at the age of 13. He was very successful in his new homeland, especially in banking, and even brought his parents to the United States. At the same time he was also involved in politics, and was successful in this too.
However, according to his great-grandson, he made two cardinal mistakes in managing his business affairs — mistakes that contributed significantly to the destruction of his brilliant career. He was bold enough to propose that the banking system should not only collect interest on loans, but should give interest on deposits as well — an idea that today appears reasonable, but at the time was taboo. As a lawmaker, he even proposed the idea as a draft bill with his country’s legislature.
Even worse, he was not ashamed of his Jewish heritage and was open about it. He did something that was simply not done — he employed Jews, women, and black Americans as tellers in his banks. Needless to say, these ethnic groups were not particularly popular in those days, and for the Bankers’ Guild, this was a declaration of war. They took action against him in a way that would not have shamed the mafia: they deposited sizeable amounts of money in his banks, which he used to provide loans, and then one day they withdrew the entire sum in one go. Although Simon Swig managed to repay every penny, he was dispossessed of his business.
The result was that Kent's grandfather, Benjamin, grew up in poverty, and was forced to start from scratch on his own. The fact that he built a real estate empire with his own hands that has survived into the fourth and fifth generations proves the old saying that hard beginnings can lead to great success.
