Distante appena 42 Km da Roma, Cave è situato a 399 m slm ed è un centro dell’alta valle del Sacco, alle falde meridionali dei Monti Prenestini, sul ciglio della profonda valle Collerano. Il paese deve il suo nome alle presenza in loco di cave di pozzolana (tufo vulcanico) e breccia. Secondo alcuni storici, invece, questo toponimo indicherebbe una “valle stretta e buia”.La struttura geomorfologia del centro storico di Cave è rappresentata da un ripiano stretto ed allungato, rastremato a formare un vero e proprio sperone circondato da un fossato naturale. Lo stemma di Cave presenta dei simboli dipinti quali: la sirena, la stella, la colomba con un ramo di olivo nel becco, realizzati nei colori argento, azzurro, nero, oro e verde.
Storia
Fin dai tempi più remoti la città di Cave si è caratterizzata come insediamento stabile di carattere essenzialmente agricolo, organizzato a ridosso del fosso del Rio che confluisce nella Valle del Sacco.Le fonti bibliografiche parlano in forma ricorrente di un oppidum situato nella zona non lontana dell’attuale città, che avrebbe addirittura origine romana. Le Storie di Tito Livio raccontano che nel 267 a.C. nella guerra contro i Volsci e gli Ernici, i Romani dopo aver attirato i loro nemici in una "valle affossata" ne fecero orribile scempio. La maggior parte degli autori è concorde nel ravvisare il luogo della battaglia nella contrada Campo nel territorio di Cave, proprio dove oggi è situato il Santuario della Madonna del Campo, e ove sorgeva un castello chiamato Castrum Trebarum.Un’altra zona del territorio cavense che reca profonda memoria storica è quella posta oggi in posizione esterna al centro abitato, chiamata Cruci, poiché si trova alla confluenza di tre strade provenienti dalle località Morino-Potano-Valli, che si immettevano sull’antica Preneste, attraverso la tenuta dei SS. Quattro Coronati, presso l’attuale Colle Palme.Il Tomassetti nel suo volume sulla “Campagna Romana”, edito nel 1912, descrive di aver notato, durante le sue escursioni nel territorio, parecchie rovine di ville, di piscine di età presumibilmente imperiale, frammenti di sculture ed altro. Del resto la stessa puntuale descrizione la riporta il Marianecci, nella sua monografia “Memorie Cavesi” edito nel 1941, su ciò che vede a quei tempi e che ritrova sul territorio, sottolineando la presenza nel passato di aggregati di tipo urbano, di ville ed impianti romani in tutta la zona; ciò è altresì confermato dalla presenza di resti romani rintracciabili in varie chiese del territorio, utilizzati, come avveniva spesso in passato, come materiali di spoglio.Risale al Medioevo l’origine di Cave, citata in alcuni documenti come Castrum Trebarum. Questo primo nucleo dell’antico castello di Cave si costituì intorno ad alcuni monasteri benedettini dipendenti dall’abazia di Subiaco.Si deve aspettare, però, l’inizio del XI secolo per vedere citato questo primitivo nucleo abitativo, non più come Castrum, ma come Cave, a causa delle cave di pozzolana scavate nel territorio per le esigenze della zona e della vicina città di Preneste (Palestrina).La prima notizia riguardante Cave risale all'VIII sec., quando Papa Stefano III (752-757), uno dei primi papi a detenere il potere spirituale e temporale, donò il territorio di Cave con i suoi monasteri di Santo Stefano e Santa Sabina, con annessi diritti, alle monache di San Ciriaco di Roma, unitamente a tutte le terre ad essi circostanti.Come tutti i castelli medievali, dove la residenza feudale si unisce alla tipologia di insediamento o villaggio fortificato, anche il castello duecentesco di Cave fu espressione del fenomeno dell’incastellamento nato per arginare le invasioni barbariche e proprio per questo venne dotato di fossati e di alte mura.Il 20 marzo 971 d.C. è la data in cui venne sottoscritta la convenzione tra l’abate di Subiaco e quello dei SS. Cosma e Damiano; documento che si ritiene dia origine a Cave come vero e proprio "castello" enfiteutico della Badia di Subiaco. Data la sua posizione, il castrum era considerato di un certo pregio strategico e per questo fu varie volte oggetto di conquiste ed attacchi alternativamente da parte del papato e dei nobili. Il Castrum Cavarum sembrerebbe essere stato così uno dei più antichi castelli del Medio Evo nel Lazio e secondo il Vannutelli, nel volume Ricordo del Suolo nativo edito nel 1936, servì da rifugio alle popolazioni laziali minacciate dalle invasioni longobarde.Non è dato conoscere la struttura reale del borgo d’origine, se non da alcune rappresentazioni sicuramente sommarie riportate nella cartografia più antica che rappresentano sempre Cave come agglomerato molto compatto, cinto da mura e caratterizzato dalla presenza di un’alta torre (che crollerà nel 1760). Notizie della Torre di Cave sono riportate nell’archivio Colonna presso la Biblioteca di S. Scolastica a Subiaco.Nell’anno 988 d.C. avvenne il riconoscimento ufficiale della chiesa di San Lorenzo martire, così come risulta dalla Bolla del Vescovo di Palestrina Stefano II, del 24 aprile di quell’anno.Possesso della Santa Sede (998), Cave fu feudo di diverse famiglie nobili succedutesi nel tempo: i Caetani, i Conti, i Borgia, i Carafa. Le famiglie, però, che seppero imprimere dei segni indelebili nella storia della città di Cave furono: gli Annibaldi e i Colonna.Gli Annibaldi governarono Cave con grande sapienza e con loro, la popolazione, visse anni tranquilli. Il nome della famiglia Annibaldi è legata a due date importanti per Cave, il 10 maggio 1296, giorno in cui venne emanato il primo Statuto di Cave sottoscritto dagli abitanti del borgo e da Riccardo de Militiis della famiglia degli Annibaldi: lo statuto, composto da 46 disposizioni, in coerenza con le speranze e le aspettative degli abitanti di Cave, garantiva loro libertà e stabiliva diritti e doveri delle due parti. Il rotolo pergamenaceo è oggi conservato presso l’archivio Colonna.Un successivo Statuto emanato nel 31 marzo 1307 sarà concesso dal nobile Riccardo di Tebaldo Annibaldi, costituito da 116 disposizioni, più ampio rispetto al precedente, riporta infatti alcune rubriche relative alle cause civili e ai danni dati a persone e cose. La copia originale è un manoscritto membranaceo oggi conservato presso l’archivio Orsini.Ma ancor più degli Annibaldi furono i Colonna a legare il loro nome alla città. Il primo Colonna ad entrare nella storia di Cave fu il capostipite della famiglia, Pietro della Colonna che, nel XI secolo, s’impadronì con prepotenza del feudo di Cave, per sottoporlo sotto il dominio di Roma , che ne era “de jure” il sovrano.Questo episodio segna l’inizio di un difficile rapporto tra i Colonna e i pontefici romani, caratterizzato da un’alternanza di amicizia, ostilità, scomuniche, privilegi, guerre e paci .Nel 1420 Martino V, Papa Oddone Colonna di Genazzano, esonerò il Comune dalle imposte del sale e del focatico. La Comunità di Cave si dichiarava per questo motivo suddito “privato nomine” e nel 1427 il Papa dispose che Cave rimanesse dominio perpetuo ed indiviso dei suoi tre nipoti; ma così non andò; si riaprirono in fatti in quegli anni aspre lotte tra i Colonna, la Chiesa e Roma, che condizionarono la vita della città, finché papa Giulio II restituì definitivamente ai Colonna tutti gli originari territori, beni e diritti; compreso dunque il territorio di Cave.E’ documentato al 1461 il transito a Cave di Papa Pio II Piccolomini che si recava da Subiaco a Tivoli. Secondo alcuni autori il Papa si fermò alla Fonte di Santo Stefano che era in consegna ai padri Agostiniani, ove usufruì dell’acqua le cui proprietà terapeutiche erano note fin dai tempi più antichi.La data del 1462 fu importante per Cave, poiché, avvenne la scelta testamentaria di Odoardo Colonna di eleggersi sepoltura presso la Chiesa di Santo Stefano, che determinò un richiamo di interesse verso la città. Nel testamento egli stabilì pure il lascito alla moglie Filippa di numerose cose e proprietà tra cui la rendita del “montano di Cave”.Sono questi gli anni in cui l’influsso degli affari e delle vicende della famiglia Colonna divenne estremamente significativo per Cave. Infatti, un terzo Statuto attribuito alla famiglia Colonna risalente alla prima metà del 1500 è oggi conservato nell’Archivio di detta famiglia.Nell’arco di tre secoli, Cave fu teatro di sanguinosi scontri. Per due volte fu assediato e bombardato dagli eserciti papali, senza peraltro cedere agli assalitori: la prima volta nel 1482, durante la guerra fra il papa Sisto IV e il re di Napoli, del quale i Colonna erano alleati, i Savelli e i Della Valle; la seconda volta nel 1484 al riaccendersi delle ostilità fra lo stesso Sisto IV e i Colonna. Poi fu conquistato e messo a fuoco dai soldati del cardinal Cosenza, inviati dal Papa Alessandro VI (Rodrigo Borgia) che aveva privato i Colonna dei loro diritti sul feudo, assegnandoli a membri della propria famiglia. Ed ancora dovette sottostare alle armi dell’esercito papale, inviato da Paolo III a domare la rivolta degli abitanti dei feudi prenestini che si erano ribellati alla soppressione dei benefici fiscali concessi loro da Martino V.In questo panorama di fatti sanguinosi si inserisce il trattato di pace, per porre fine ad una cruenta guerra di cui una delle cause fu la cosiddetta “guerra del sale” iniziata dopo che la Camera Apostolica aumentò del doppio l’imposizione daziaria sull’importazione del sale che arrivava dalle saline siciliane e quindi dal Regno di Napoli. Questa guerra fu combattuta dallo Stato Pontificio, sotto Paolo IV, contro il re di Spagna e di Napoli, dal settembre 1556 al settembre 1557. Le trattative per la pace si svolsero a Cave, presso il palazzo Leoncelli, una delle più nobili dimore cittadine, il 13 settembre del 1557, fra il cardinale plenipotenziario Carlo Carafa, inviato da papa Paolo IV e il duca d’Alba, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, rappresentante di Filippo II di Spagna e di Napoli. Alle clausole rese pubbliche si aggiunse un accordo riguardante il futuro del Ducato di Paliano, che veniva posto sotto il governo di un consiglio fiduciario, composto da personalità delle due parti, senza specificarne la sorte definitiva. Il pontefice, inoltre, fece includere una clausola riguardante la condanna a morte di Marcantonio ed il sequestro di tutti i suoi feudi, pene che restarono in vigore, anche se nominalmente. Il trattato, tra le altre condizioni, prevedeva la smaterializzazione della fortezza di Ferentino, che cessò di essere capoluogo della Campagna e Marittima.La sorte del Ducato di Paliano, invece, veniva determinata da un trattato segreto del 14 settembre dello stesso anno, che stabiliva che alla morte di papa Paolo IV, il feudo, sottratto dallo stesso papa, per donarlo al nipote Giovanni Carafa, fosse recuperato da Marcantonio Colonna. La Spagna, tuttavia, non poteva abbandonare e deludere il suo più fedele e capace alleato italiano, per cui il cardinale Carafa, all’insaputa del papa, fu obbligato a sottoscrivere il citato accordo che impegnava la sua parte alla cancellazione della condanna nei confronti di Marcantonio ed alla restituzione alla casata di tutte le prerogative e dominazioni sui possedimenti, riuniti due anni prima nello Stato di Paliano. La pace di Cave sancì la fine dell’alleanza tra Paolo IV con la Francia e l’inizio del suo riavvicinamento alla Spagna ed, inoltre, la riabilitazione di Casa Colonna e in particolare di Marcantonio, in seguito ammiraglio pontificio alla battaglia di Lepanto.Il conflitto tra Spagna e Francia per l’egemonia sull’Europa si concluse con la successiva pace di Cateau Cambrésis del 2 aprile 1559.Dalla fine del 1500 Cave non conobbe più momenti drammatici. Sul suo territorio si insediarono numerosi ordini religiosi, confraternite e opere pie, aventi fini di assistenza sanitaria, sociale e di culto. Molto alto e diffuso, infatti, era il bisogno materiale e morale della popolazione che fu sostenuta dall’istituzione dell’Ospedale dei Fatebenefratelli, del Monte frumentario, del Monte delle orfane, del Legato Mastricola e, infine, dell’Ospedale Mattei. L’allora diffusa religiosità porta a edificare gran parte delle chiese ancor oggi esistenti. La presenza di tali istituzioni umanitarie, oltre ad essere importanti per gli scopi benefici, lo furono anche per il loro ruolo nella distribuzione della proprietà fondiaria e dall’assetto patrimoniale, come si rileva dal carteggio relativo all’alienazione di molti beni avvenuta intorno agli anni Venti. L’agricoltura, a cui i cavensi si dedicavano, unitamente allo sfruttamento dei boschi, permise alla popolazione di non conoscere la fame avendo ogni famiglia un proprio terreno, più o meno esteso in cui coltivare un po’ di tutto. Quanto alle donne, oltre a collaborare nei lavori dei campi, spesso, se avevano da poco partorito, erano ingaggiate da famiglie benestanti come balie. Un’illustre esempio è quello di Teodora Petrella a cui fu affidato il compito di allattare il principe Fabrizio Colonna. Per questo fu ampiamente ricompensata, infatti, ottenne anche per i suoi discendenti un esonero dai dazi e dalle gabelle. All’occorrenza la popolazione cavense trovava ciò di cui aveva bisogno nelle fiere che si tenevano a Palestrina. Rinomate erano quelle di S.Àgapito e di S. Martino della durata di una decina di giorni, dove partecipavano i residenti dei paesi limitrofi per gareggiare nelle corse ippiche. Molto seguita era anche la fiera franca, poiché permetteva ai partecipanti di avere franchigie ed agevolazioni. In quella che un tempo era nota come la vecchia Praeneste, inoltre, c’era un ufficio di corrispondenza aperto anche per gli abitanti di Cave, Genazzano, Zagarolo, Gallicano, Capranica Prenestina e San Vito Romano.E’ del 1675 una relazione sullo stato di Cave e di Rocca di Cave (quest’ultima resasi autonoma da Cave nel 1909) scritta da Girolamo Odorico Legnetti vice marchese del Contestabile Colonna: vi si rivela il disordine amministrativo del Comune e del Clero e la loro ripugnanza a riconoscere la Signoria di Casa Colonna: la Comunità aveva addirittura messo da parte il sigillo con la sirena. Nella relazione viene riportata anche la condizione precaria di molte case, rese staticamente deboli a causa della presenza di cave antiche sottostanti;viene riportata l’avvenuta scoperta di un cippo con corona civica scolpita e di un altro termine viario che portava inciso una S e due C (Presumibilmente le due C stavano proprio per Castrum Cavarum). Si denuncia infine la caduta della sirena marmorea dalla colonna di granito orientale posta a piazza Colonna.Con atto notarile del 21 dicembre 1789 Don Filippo Colonna donò parte di Palazzo Leoncelli alla congregazione Pie Filippine, inoltre, assicurò il mantenimento di tre suore-maestre affinché istruissero ed educassero con valori cristiani i fanciulli del popolo di Cave.A poco a poco in seguito ad un incremento demografico il paese si allarga occupando la parte alta della collina e nell’Ottocento è ormai un bel nucleo urbano in cui spiccano le lussuose residenze di famiglie possidenti come i Mattei, i Leoncelli, i Giorgioli, i Venzi, i Clementi. Tramontato il potere baronale e con la presa di Roma del 1870 anche Cave rientra nel Regno d’Italia.Nei primi anni del XX secolo viene istituito oltre al mercato settimanale anche il mercato del bestiame e dei prodotti tipici; frequenti sono le fiere-mercato che si svolgono nella stagione estiva come quella dei bozzoli per l’allevamento dei bachi da seta. Questa fiera fu molto importante in quanto fece da calmiere dei prezzi per tutti gli altri mercati della zona. L’abbondanza di boschi favorì l’attività di taglio e commercio del legno, come sopraindicato, nonché la commercializzazione e l’esportazione di castagne e noci. Nel periodo che va dal 1930 sino ad oltre un decennio, l’agricoltura a Cave fu investita dal fenomeno della proliferazione delle piantagioni di tabacco, in particolare dei tipi di tabacco per sigaro.Nel 1916 sorge il grande edificio scolastico in contrada Canapine e quasi contemporaneamente viene inaugurata la ferrovia elettrica a scartamento ridotto delle “Vicinali” che collegava Roma a Frosinone via Anticoli di Campagna (oggi Fiuggi).Con lo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale anche Cave vede la partenza dei suoi figli per il fronte e la perdita di molti suoi cittadini. Nel 1918, un altro drammatico evento segnò la popolazione cavense, l’epidemia della “spagnola”, testimoniato dallo scritto di don Nazareno Marianecci “Memorie cavesi”.Il secondo conflitto mondiale rappresenta un periodo poco documentato dalle fonti d’archivio; è certo che però Cave subì significativi danni bellici a causa di vari bombardamenti che compromisero definitivamente la parte più antica della città. Infatti, subito dopo, ci fu un graduale spopolamento del centro storico a favore delle aree poste più in alto della città, ormai direttamente raggiungibili grazie alla realizzazione del ponte che collega, passando a mezza costa, Palestrina con Genazzano.

It is a city located in the high Sacco’s river valley, at the southern foot of the “Prenestini”mount.
The city’s name is due to the Tophus and Rabbles’ pits.According to some historians the toponym means “ A dark tight valley” Cave’s geomorphologic structure looks like a tight and stretched plain enclosed into a natural moat. The city’s coat of arms shows many symbols, such as a mermaid, a star, a dove with an olive branch in the beak, and it is made with silver, sky blue , black , gold and green colours. On the 1st of August 2003 Cave has became a City . Because of this the coats of arms has been little changed, from opal into a modern French Shield, the crown from single to double. The township’s banner has been modified too, and today it shows a velvet drape, with gold banner and necklines.
HISTORY:
Since the most remote times the city of Cave is essentially characterized as a stable installation of agricultural character, organized behind the ditch of the Rio that meets in the Valley of “Sacco”
The bibliographical sources speak about an “oppidum”in an area distant to the actual city, that would have had Roman origin. The Histories of Tito Livio tell that in the year 267 B.C. during the war against the Volsci and the Ernici, the Romans after having drawn their enemies in a “dip valley”were able to massacre them. The majority of the authors agree to recognize the place of the battle in the region called “CAMPO” ( Field) belongs to the territory of Cave, where today the Madonna del Campo” Sanctuary is situated, and where once rose a castle called “Castrum Trebarum.” Another zone of the territory Cavense that brings deep historical memory today, is called Cruci, where three roads coming from Morino-Potano-Valli cross that were introduced on the ancient Preneste through the estate of the SSs.“Quattro Coronati” (four Crowned) near the actual “ Colle Palme”. These statements are supported due to the presence of Roman ruins and materials in various churches of the territory previously used. Also to the Middle Ages the origin of Cave, quoted in some documents as “Castrum Trebarum.” This first nucleus of the ancient Cave’s Castle was constructed around some Benedictine monasteries, who were dependent upon Subiaco’s Abbey. However, it took until the beginning of the XI century to see this primitive nucleus quoted no more as Castrum, but as Cave, because the caves of Pozzolana dug in the territory provided for the area’s demand, and for the near city of Praeneste (Palestrina).The first news regarding Cave arose from the VIII century, when Pope Stefano III (752-757), one of the first popes to hold the spiritual and earthly power, gave the territory of Cave with the monasteries of Saint Stephen and Saint Sabina, with all the rights to the nuns of St. Ciriaco in Rome, together with all the land surrounding. As all the medieval castles, also the thirteenth-century Cave’s castle, were expressions of the phenomenon of the “incastellamento,” This phenomenon had been born for embanking the barbaric invasions, for this reason the castle came endowed with ditches and tall boundaries. On the 20th of March, 971 was drawn up the agreement between the abbot of Subiaco and that of the SSs. The “Castrum Cavarum” would have been recognized as one of the most ancient castles of the Middle Ages in the Lazio region, and second the Vannutelli, as he told in his volume “Memory of the native Ground” edited in 1936, it served as a shelter for the native populations of Latium, threatened by the Lombard’s invasions. It is not possible to know anything for certain about the real structure of the primordial suburb, because we have just some summary representations brought in the most ancient cartography that always represent Cave as very compact agglomerated, encircled by boundaries and characterized by the presence of a tall tower (which collapsed in 1760). It is possible to find news about this tower just on the Colonna’ archives preserved by the Saint Scolastica’s Library in Subiaco .In the year 988 AD the old church of “San Lorenzo Martire” was officially recognized like a Church as it was written in Stephen the II‘s Palestrina Bishop bull, dated on 24th of April of the same year .(988 AD) Possession of the Holy Sede Cave was filled with many noble families took over the time as for example : The “CAETANI “ the “ CONTI” the “ BORGIA” and also the “ CARAFA”, but the two most important families linked to Cave’s history are certainly the “ ANNIBALDI” and the “COLONNA” The Annibaldis governed Cave with great wisdom and with them, the population, has lived peaceful for years. The Annibaldi’s family name is connected with two important events -May 10th 1296, the day in which the first Statute of Cave was emanated and subscribed from the suburb’s inhabitants, and from Riccardo de Militiis, representative of the Annibaldi’s family. The statute was composed by 46 dispositions, in accordance with the hopes and the expectations of the inhabitants of Cave. It guaranteed them liberty and established rights and duties of the two parts. Today the vellum roll is conserved near the archives’ “COLONNA” . Another statute was emanated on March 31, 1307, and granted by the noble “Riccardo of Tebaldo Annibaldi”. This statute was composed by 116 dispositions, and it was plentiful, if compared with the previous. This happened because it contained also some index books embodying civil causes and damages caused to people and things. The original copy was a membranous manuscript, today preserved near the Orsini’ archives. Still more than the Annibaldi’ family, it was the Colonna’s family that connected their name with the city. The first member to enter in the city’s history was the family’s founder; his name was “Pietro Colonna” who overbearingly, in the XI century, got possession of the Feud of Cave to submit it to the power of Rome, who was the "de jure" Sovereign of it. This episode marks the beginning of a difficult relationship between the Colonna’s and the Roman pontifices, characterized by an alternation of friendship, hostility, excommunications, privileges, war and peace. These struggles conditioned the city’s life until Pope Giulio the II brought back all the territories, the goods and the rights to the Colonna’s family, including the city of Cave. Another important event connected to the history of the city is the passage of Pope Pio the II Piccolomini, who went from Subiaco to Tivoli. According to many authors the Pope stopped himself by the Source Of “SANTO STEFANO,” where there were waters well known for their therapeutic properties, that was on consignment to the “PADRI AGOSTINIANI”. The date of 1462 was important for Cave, because of the testamentary choice of Odoardo Colonna, who chose to be buried in the church of “SANTO STEFANO”. This event focused the attention on the city.
