In a frenzied effort to register Hispanic voters in time for the November election, Latino advocacy groups and the political parties themselves are seizing on a variety of serious, and fun, tactics.
They’re bringing out the stars, hitting the streets, and, yes, playing games.
Beginning the same day as the Democratic National Convention started in Charlotte, N.C., the National Council of La Raza launched "The Presidential" giveaway.
Ten people who register to vote on the NCLR's "Mobilize to Vote" webpage this week will be selected at random and given a copy of the new board game. The winners will be named Monday.
NCLR’s Associate Director, Digital Organizing, Ellie Klerlein, told the Huffington Post the giveaway is part of a multifaceted effort aimed at engaging and motivating Latinos.
“We saw in the 2008 elections that Latinos played a pivotal role in states like Florida, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada,” Klerlein wrote in an email. “It’s crucial that Latinos turn out to vote this election season as well and NCLR is working hard to see that our community is represented at the polls.”
The game lets players strategize their way through a presidential campaign and into the White House. It doesn't mention any candidate specifically, but it does include allusions that are extremely relevant to the ongoing election – and Latinos. One card reads: "You are perceived to have flip-flopped on your immigration position. Your opponent adds one vote to Arizona and one vote to New Mexico."

Its co-creator, Regina Glocker, told the Huffington Post her intention was to educate and motivate voters.
"I live in a democracy, and I think it's pathetic how few people vote," she said.
Digital platforms are an increasingly important component of voter registration drives by NCLR, Rock the Vote, Voto Latino and others reaching out to the rapidly growing Hispanic voting age population. Nearly 22 million Latinos are eligible to vote, according to the Pew Research Center, but less than half are registered.

“NCLR is registering voters through our website at www.nclr.org/register and has challenged our network to register their friends and family through the Mobilize to Vote Challenge at www.nclr.org/challenge,” Klerlein wrote.
This week, too, Voto Latino is expected to launch a smartphone app offering Hispanics information about issues and candidates, the location of voting places and sample ballots, according to Knight Digital Media Center’s News Leadership 3.0 blog.
It also has partnered with TurboVote, which uses a simple digital application to sign voters up for absentee ballots.
“We make the voting process as awesome as renting a DVD from Netflix,” it says on its website. “You sign up, and we'll keep track of all your rules and deadlines and even send you all the forms you need, so all you have to do is sign them and drop them in the mail. It's simple. It's fun. It's democracy, made awesomer.”
"That's very attractive to young voters, because often they don't physically make it out to the polls on election day," Pamela Morejon, VP of digital media for Voto Latino, told News Leadership 3.0.
TV’s “Ugly Betty,” America Ferrera, serves as a Voto Latino ambassador, spreading the word about the importance of voting. She was in Charlotte on Wednesday, a few short blocks from the site of the Democratic National Convention, as part of a “Town Hall” forum involving some 200 college students.
“I was born and raised in this country. I am no less American than anyone else in this room,” she said. But, she added, she is also a Latina, “and I work very hard to help that community understand how to work and the beautiful possibilities that lie inside that community with engagement.”
A coalition of advocacy groups including the Hispanic Federation and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) joined forces in March with a goal of registering 2 million voters in time for the election.
Doing it, LULAC’s Executive Director Brent Wilkes told the Huffington Post, takes shoe leather.
“You need a good ground campaign,” he said. “To get somebody to vote requires a one-on-one conversation. It's not something that's easily done through ads and the mass marketing type approach. So we're trying to make individual connections. We've got 22 different states where we've got our local members that are helping to register voters and talking about the importance of vote.”
Republicans and Democrats alike recognize the increasing importance of the Hispanic vote, and the advantage of accessing them digitally – in Spanish and English. Latinos for Obama and Juntos con Romney maintain actively updated websites and Facebook page. Both campaigns post regularly on Twitter. And the campaigns pepper email inboxes with requests for contributions, of course, but also with ones like the one sent out Wednesday evening by Obama for America.
It called on supporters to vote, and offered a strongly worded hyperlink leading to a site where voters could register:
“Commit to vote today and make sure that you're registered. Then spread the word.”

The importance was driven home powerfully Wednesday night, when Cristina Saralegui, the “Hispanic Oprah,” stepped to the podium at the Democratic National Convention and exhorted Latinos to register, and vote.
“Here, we Latinos have a very powerful voice,” she said, “but only if we use it.”

Jenni Rivera Death Draws U.S. Attention, Highlights Mexican Cultural Influence
When the plane carrying Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera disappeared in Mexico this weekend, the mostly Latino fans who have watched her rise from nightclub queen to venue-filling star, tuned into her reality shows and bought her cosmetics responded with fear, grief and anxiety.
On Twitter, Facebook and her shows’ fan sites, they posted their hopes and prayers. But when authorities discovered the remnants of Rivera’s plane with no survivors, stories about Rivera appeared on Telemundo and Univision, the nation’s leading Spanish-language networks, as well as CNN, MSNBC, ABC and near the top of The New York Times website. The Wall Street Journal tracked a posthumous surge in her music sales. And Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) spoke about Rivera’s life and death on the Senate floor.
In a country where Latinos make up a fast-growing share of the population, consumer market and electorate, the sudden death of a California-born songstress famous for distinctly Mexican-style music amounts to big, mainstream news.
“It’s really amazing because I have seen it on the front page of every newspaper I have seen today,” said Federico Subervi, director of the Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets at Texas State University. “It’s a recognition that Latino popular culture is important and influential in this country.”
In 1995, when Texas-born, Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla Perez, 23, was shot and killed by the former president of her fan club, stories about the young woman known as the Tejano music queen took days to reach the nation’s biggest newspapers, Subervi said. NBC’s Tom Brokaw referred to her as the “Mexican Madonna.”
But fans in Latin America and parts of the Southwest heard about the singer’s death on local Spanish and English-language radio and television within hours. Two days after her death, The New York Times published a story describing the crowds gathering in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she was killed. Mourners began forming a line at 4 a.m. for an open-casket viewing of the singer’s body that ultimately included some 30,000 to 40,000 people.
Following Selena’s death, there were other hints of the growing Latino influence on American culture. Her posthumous album and its combination of Spanish and English-language music debuted at number one on the U.S. “Billboard 200,” making her the first Latino singer to have a number-one debut on the chart.
Today, news moves at a faster pace and some of the same social networks that people used to follow Rivera's career also helped to spread news of her death.
There are also more reporters working inside major news organizations who are Latino or listen to Mexican-influenced music, Subveri said. Then there’s the Internet, making it much easier for even the uninitiated to listen to and quickly describe Mexican-influenced music.
Selena’s Tejano songs with their accordion-driven melodies and her love-centered pop music were quite different than Rivera’s bandas, narcocorridos, and more recently, ballads about the rougher side of life, love, marriage and the enduring strength of women.
Bandas lean on a larger, louder brass band sound with tubas, horns, clarinets, cymbals and drums, said Chris Strachwitz, president of the California-based Arhoolie Records and Foundation, the site of one of the nation’s largest Mexican and Mexican-influenced music repositories. Bandas’ recurrent themes have lead some musicologists to describe it as a sung hybrid of country and rap.
Banda music began during the French intervention in Mexico when government officials established bandas de policías (police bands) -- mostly brass and percussion players -- in nearly every city and town, Strachwitz said. The groups remained popular with the working class and poor who live in Sinaloa, a Western Mexican state, and a few other regions. About 100 years later, when immigrants from these regions began to stream into the U.S. in the 1980s, they brought their favorite music with them.
Narcocorridos also draw heavily on accordions, but often feature real stories about actual events, with locations and dates on which major political protests, revolutionary battles, drug trafficking and other criminal activities occurred, according to Strachwitz.
Rivera, 43, was one of just a few women to succeed in the two male-dominated Mexican-music genres, said Elijah Wald, a music historian who wrote the 2002 book, Narcocorrido: A Journey into the Music of Drugs, Guns, and Guerrillas. Wald first interviewed Rivera in 1998.
Rivera built her reputation as a brassy and tough but glamorous young, divorced, single mom, who saw two husbands go to prison and endured the revelation that one of the men had molested their child.
Early on, while still performing in clubs, Rivera made her tough-girl act part of the show, taking shots of cognac handed up from the audience. Often, she feigned the inability to drink more, then uttered her trademark, “Ay, no puedo (Oh, I can’t),” followed by another fan-sponsored shot and a still lively show, Wald said. Later, when her fame extended beyond Los Angeles, about 90 percent of her audience consisted of Latinas who identified with her life and her struggles, according to Wald. Rivera's shows started with her in a black baseball cap and jeans, when she would sing bandas and narccorridos. As the evening progressed, Rivera would change into ball gowns and offer mariachi tunes and ballads.
“Her act was a cross between gangster chick and Celine Dion and Paquita la del Barrio, you know the whole man-hating, we girls are in it together thing,” Wald said. “Her entire act was you can have it all but with no compromise.”
“She was tough and so funny,” Wald, continued. “She did not slim down to look like a fashion model or avoid wearing the dresses she would have worn if she had slimmed down to look like a fashion model. She was so affirming for her audience and that was what was so great about Jenni Rivera. She was the proof that they were important and they mattered and they were beautiful.”
But Wald suspects that the story of Rivera’s death may have been reported widely because she had produced and appeared on two mostly English-language reality shows (with Spanish subtitles) on Mun2, a Telemundo-affiliated bilingual cable network owned by NBC. ABC was also developing a sitcom around Rivera, The New York Times reported Monday.
“I think she deserved this kind of coverage,” Wald said. “She was no pop princess, manufactured and made. But, I am assuming that the fact that she was in the pipeline for ABC meant that there were press people connected to her who put the word out in places it might not have otherwise been.”
Even Subervi is willing to concede that wide coverage of Rivera’s death may not be a clear sign of newfound regard for Mexican-influenced art.
Some organizations might have instead looked to new measures, Subervi said: what’s trending on Twitter and Google. Others may be working to embrace America’s new demographic reality, he said.
“This is my cynical side but I find the Marco Rubio thing very interesting,” he said. “I have to wonder if he would have said that if Republicans weren’t trying to reach Latinos because they did so poorly in the last campaign. Now his glowing statements about Rivera are part of the official record.”
Rubio described Rivera as a “huge star,” and said his mother was among her mourning fans.

Pero Wald sospecha que la historia de la muerte de Rivera pudo haber sido reportada ampliamente debido a que había producido y apareció en dos reality shows predominantemente en inglés (con subtítulos en español) en Mun2, una filial de Telemundo bilingüe por cable propiedad de NBC. Dream Act Activists Push Into Mainstream With American Protest Movement Tactics
The picture was classic fan meets superstar backstage. Lady Gaga in hot-pink lipstick, dark shades and a T-shirt emblazoned with the words, “Pass the Dream Act,” stood flanked by two men. One had a serious grip on the singer’s waist.
But for those fighting for immigration relief and against state-level attempts to vigorously enforce immigration law, the photo taken at an August 2010 Lady Gaga concert in Arizona and widely shared online was a sign that young undocumented students and their core cause had scored a major victory, maybe even entered the mainstream.
Young people advocating the Dream Act, like the men pictured with Lady Gaga, are at the center of one of the most effective and dynamic social movements in recent history, sociologists and political analysts said. Young, undocumented immigrants steeped in the language and culture of American protest were the gas in the activist machine that pushed the Obama administration to create an administrative path for temporary immigration relief, known as deferred action, in June.
“I think lots of people want to take credit for that victory, but it really belongs to the students themselves,” said Roberto G. Gonzales, a University of Chicago sociologist who has spent the last 10 years tracking the lives of young, undocumented children as they grow into adulthood. “Most of what we witnessed last week would not have happened if it were not for this impressive movement of young people.”
The Dream Act, introduced as the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, by Utah Republican Sen. Orin Hatch in 2001, has bumped around both houses of Congress, but several times has failed to become law. Versions have changed and Democrats have become the primary supporters, but most versions would create a path to either legal immigrant status or citizenship and eligibility for in-state college tuition rates for young, undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.
The deferred action directive announced by President Barack Obama in June gave many members of this same group -- the 1.7 million young, undocumented immigrants called Dreamers -- the chance to apply for temporary, renewable two-year deportation relief and work permits.
In the years since the Dream Act was first introduced in 2001, student activists have filled the leadership ranks of organizations staging sit-ins and hunger strikes, rallies and marches aiming to push elected officials to pass the Dream Act, open state colleges and universities to undocumented immigrants, and expand eligibility for in-state tuition rates and driver’s licenses.
“I think its fair to say, that in a lot of cases, they see themselves as part of the circle of membership in the United States,” said Gonzales. “They’ve had these American experiences and relationships and attachments in ways that give them, I think really, really strong claims to belonging in this country. But the broad question -- do they have the right to have rights. Well that’s highly contested and it remains.”
Some have come to focus on political lobbying and building connections. Others populate the cornucopia of Twitter feeds, YouTube channels, websites and Facebook walls, where calls for the Dream Act and related measures are a persistent theme. And still more are engage in civil disobedience that they said they see as essential for the movement's next chapter.
“I would most definitely consider myself a student of civil rights history,” said Marco Saavedra, a Dream Act activist, leader and college student who helped to stage a sit-in inside an Obama campaign office in June and has spent time in an immigrant detention facility.
Saavedra has actively encouraged other young, undocumented people to “out” themselves and their immigration status at public events. And he is connected to a growing effort to stage protests that intentionally lead to arrest and time in an immigrant detention facility. While there, activists gather the stories of people who, based on the administration’s stated policies, should not be detained or deported.
“We’re not trying to be quiet,” said Saavedra. “Silence and good behavior in the face of injustice never changed anything. We’re trying to be use non-violent protest to say we can’t continue with the daily fear of deportation. We wouldn’t allow public officials to keep operating as if there was nothing wrong.”
Saavedra said he has studied closely the writings and life of Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X and civil rights organizations including the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee and the Congress of Racial Equality. He rarely shies from an opportunity to talk about the Dream movement online.
Tactics such as those embraced by Saavedra helped connect one of the country’s best-known undocumented immigrants to the Dreamer movement.
In 2009, Jose Antonio Vargas, Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has worked as a senior contributing editor for The Huffington Post and has written for magazines that include The New Yorker, was enjoying what he described the best professional year of his life. But Vargas had a secret. He was an undocumented immigrant. One day, sitting as his New York office computer, headphones on, Vargas watched a video of Pacheco and other Dreamers talking about the rising tide of deportations.
These young people were trying to change the situation, he thought. They had given the slogan, “undocumented and unafraid,” meaning. Dreamers often talked about the date that they “came out,” and pulled hard on the space between emotions, values and laws by telling stories about their lives as undocumented immigrants and about their struggles that made them and their humanity hard to ignore.
After considerable thought, Vargas wrote a 4,000-word New York Times Magazine story about how he discovered his own legal status as a teenager, then built a life and career under the shadow of his secret immigration status. He also set up an organization committed to changing the national conversation around immigration.
The story was one of the most-shared on Google for two weeks, said Vargas, though Google could not confirm the story's history. A New York Times spokeswoman said Vargas' story was the most-viewed story on the news organization's website for two days.
In June, Time magazine published a cover story about Vargas with an image of 35 undocumented immigrants situated between the words “We are American” and “… just not legally.”
Days after the president announced the deferred action directive and its relief for young, undocumented immigrants, a series of polls found broad public support for the move.

Source text - English INTRODUCCIÓN | PENSAMIENTO DE DIAGNÓSTICO
Una de las cualidades esenciales de todo consultor es la habilidad de detectar un problema y tomar un paso previo a su solución, este paso previo es conocido como “diagnosis thinking.” Nos referimos a la cualidad de hacer una pausa frente a un problema, elaborar el adecuado diagnóstico y hasta contar con la causa raíz en mano; proceder a dar una solución al problema. Este paso previo denominado “diagnóstico” puede sonar obvio pero en realidad, no lo es y muchos consultores no lo realizan
adecuadamente.
El factor esencial de la aceleración 2.0 es enfocarse en acciones que efectivamente lleven a las empresas a detonar ese crecimiento acelerado y sostenible, de manera práctica e inmediata. El eje del éxito de estos proyectos se basa en la construcción de una relación “cliente-consultor” basada en la confianza y la cercanía, donde el cliente podrá implementar en compañía del consultor nueva ideas que facilitarán el éxito de la compañía. Justamente el propósito de la primera etapa es darle la oportunidad al consultor y al mismo tiempo al cliente, de realizar esta pausa indispensable para realizar el adecuado diagnóstico, identificando los temas prioritarios para la empresa.
DIAGNÓSTICO | OBJETIVO GENERAL
El objetivo primordial de la primera etapa del proceso se enfoca en definir los temas prioritarios a atender con el fin de facilitar, promover o detonar el crecimiento acelerado y sostenido de la empresa. Dichos temas prioritarios se obtienen a partir de un fino análisis y comprensión del estado actual de la empresa desde dos perspectivas y cómo es que cada una de ellas interactúa entre sí. El diagnóstico del ambiente externo permite determinar el grado de alineación de la cadena de valor de la cual forma parte la empresa en cuestión. Mientras que el diagnóstico del ambiente interno permite comprender el grado de desarrollo de los elementos institucionales y la medida en la que la fuerza vital de la empresa –los colaboradores- empujan el crecimiento de la institución, en respuesta a las demandas de los factores externos –clientes y proveedores.
EL PROCESO | PASOS A SEGUIR
Dentro de esta sección se describirán los 4 pasos a ejecutar durante la primera etapa del proceso de Aceleración 2.0. Recordemos que esta etapa comienza al término de la sesión de Kick Off, en donde se aterrizan detalladamente las expectativas de los accionistas así como del personal clave al explicar las actividades que se van a realizar y los resultados que se obtendrán. Previamente a la sesión del Kick Off, el analista colaboró junto con el líder de proyecto en la organización de la agenda para la realización de las entrevistas al personal clave que realizará el consultor.

Las entrevistas abarcan dos perspectivas: por un lado, conocer la situación actual de cada área enfocándose en sus principales problemáticas. Por otro lado, determinar el grado de desarrollo de la empresa; para lo cual se realiza una comparación de las prácticas de la empresa contra las mejores prácticas de negocio. La suma de la información recabada durante las entrevistas debe brindarle al consultor un panorama general pero claro, de cuáles son las principales problemáticas de la empresa que pudiesen estar evitando u aletargando el crecimiento del negocio.
Para lograr el objetivo de la etapa se utilizan las herramientas contenidas en el archivo IG SCORECARD DIAGNOSTICO, que se revisan a continuación:
Lo que se busca es conocer cuáles son las principales problemáticas de la empresa. Acorde al grupo de influencia al que se le realice esta pregunta, seguramente las percepciones podrán presentar diversas variantes. Por ejemplo, el grupo directivo o accionistas podrán brindar información sensible que probablemente personal operativo desconozca. Ahora, para el consultor es de vital importancia conocer tres dimensiones sobre este mismo tema:
a. ¿Cuál es la principal problemática que ha impedido u obstaculizado que la empresa crezca de manera acelerada y sostenida?
b. ¿Cuál es el origen de la problemática mencionada? ¿Cuál es su causa raíz?
c. ¿Cuál es la posible solución que cada grupo de influencia presenta a la problemática identificada?
Una vez que se han escuchado las percepciones de cada grupo de influencia, y tras la realización de todas las entrevistas que cubren las 11 áreas claves de la empresa; el consultor deberá enlistar las problemáticas que considera son las prioritarias, postulando su causa raíz así como su posible solución. Es de suma importancia resaltar en este momento que la etapa del diagnóstico no busca por ningún motivo presentar soluciones a todas y cada una de las problemáticas o carencias que se detecten en la empresa. En este momento de la etapa simplemente se busca analizar y sintetizar las principales problemáticas con su respectiva causa raíz, así como su posible solución. Lo que quiere decir que este no es un momento para la toma de decisiones del consultor ni por parte del cliente. Aún nos encontramos en el proceso de diagnóstico.
La siguientes pestañas etiquetadas como: “Scorecard, Resultados, Gráfica 1.1” se derivan de completar el resto de las pestañas que cubren cada una de las 11 áreas clave. El Scorecard organiza cada área y subárea en una pestaña diferente. Cada pestaña contiene las dimensiones que corresponden al área o subárea, junto con su definición y la descripción de cada grado de cumplimiento para acotar el criterio del consultor. Las entrevistas individuales deberán guiarse bajo el marco de referencia del Scorecard. Esta herramienta incluye las dimensiones a revisar en cada una de las áreas, la definición de cada dimensión y los diferentes grados de cumplimiento de cada dimensión; seguido por una columna en la que el consultor selecciona la calificación desde una lista desplegable. La celda solamente admite los valores predefinidos en la escala.
Conforme se realizan las entrevistas, el consultor asigna una calificación a la dimensión según el grado en que la empresa cumple con la dimensión en cuestión de acuerdo a la siguiente escala:
Cumplimiento nulo = 0
Cumplimiento bajo = 1
Cumplimiento medio = 2
Cumplimiento alto = 3
En caso de que la dimensión no sea aplicable al giro de la empresa se podrá asignar la calificación “N/A”, la cual permite que la dimensión en cuestión no sea considerada para obtener el promedio del área. Para validar y asegurar que la calificación asignada es la correcta; es importante también, que se solicite la documentación y materiales que le permita al consultor corroborar la información que el responsable del área proporciona y el grado de cumplimiento de la dimensión.
Ejemplo: si preguntamos si han definido, documentado y difundido procesos y políticas de especificaciones físicas y de seguridad para el almacenamiento de materiales; el consultor debe solicitar los documentos que contienen esta información y validarlo mediante una inspección al área de almacén.
Tras la columna en la que se colocan las calificaciones, existen columnas adicionales que ayudan al consultor a valorar y ponderar si la dimensión es crítica para el crecimiento de la empresa sin que exista una correlación directa hacia el grado de desarrollo de la misma. Por ejemplo, es posible que exista una dimensión con alto grado de desarrollo pero que por sí misma no aporte absolutamente nada al crecimiento de la organización. Dichas columnas facilitan tomar notas valiosas durante las entrevistas, así como apoyarse en la persona que se está entrevistando para valorar si esa dimensión favorece el crecimiento de la empresa. Este paso concluye cuando se han completado todas las pestañas durante las entrevistas.
Every consultant must have the ability to detect a problem and take a step back before offering a solution. This virtue is known as “diagnosis thinking.” In this regard, we refer to the virtue of taking a moment when faced with a problem, elaborating the proper diagnosis and determining the root cause before attempting to solve it. This previous step called “diagnosis” may sound obvious but is often overlooked, and consultants often do not implement it properly.
The essence of Acceleration 2.0 is to focus on those actions that will lead the company to spark an accelerated and sustainable growth immediately. The success of these projects depends largely on the construction of a ”client-consultant” relationship based on trust, where the client will be able to implement new ideas that will facilitate the success of the company in a collaborative effort with the consultant. The objective of this first stage is to give the client and the consultant the opportunity to take a moment and make this essential pause in order to arrive at the right diagnosis and identify the company’s priority issues.
DIAGNOSIS | GENERAL OBJECTIVE
The main objective of the first stage of the process is focused on defining the priority issues that must be addressed in order to facilitate, promote or spark the accelerated and sustained growth of the company. These priority issues are obtained after a detailed analysis and understanding of the current state of the company from two perspectives and how they interact with each other. On the one hand, the external environment diagnosis allows us to determine the level of alignment of the value chain the company forms part of. On the other hand, the internal environment diagnosis allows us to understand the level of development of organizational elements and the extent to which the company’s vital force—the collaborators—push the organization’s growth, as a response to the demands of external factors—clients and suppliers.
THE PROCESS | STEPS TO TAKE
This section describes the 4 steps that need to be executed during the first stage of the Acceleration 2.0 process. It is important to point out that this stage begins when the Kick Off session ends, in which shareholder and key employees expectations are specified in detail by explaining the activities that will be carried out and the results that will be obtained. Before the Kick Off session, the analyst and the project leader have organized the agenda for the conduction of the surveys that the consultant will carry out.

The interviews cover two perspectives: first, they are aimed at learning about the current situation of each area focusing on their main problems. Second, they seek to determine the company’s level of development in order to compare company practices with best business practices. The information compiled during the interviews should give the consultant a general and clear panorama of the problems that the company faces which could be slowing or hampering its growth.
To achieve the objective during this stage, the tools contained in the IG SCORECARD DIAGNOSIS file are explained below:
We want to learn about the main problems the company faces. Different perceptions may generate variants, depending on the group of influence to whom the question is directed. For example, operations employees may not have knowledge of information that management or shareholders may posses. For the consultant, it is of vital importance to understand three dimensions in this regard:
a. What is the main problem that has impeded or hampered the company’s accelerated or sustained growth?
b. What is the origin of the problem mentioned? What is its root cause?
c. What is the possible solution that each group of influence proposes to the problems that have been identified?
Once we have listened to the perceptions of each group of influence, and after all the interviews that cover the 11 key areas of the company have been conducted; the consultant must list the problems he considers are priorities, determining their root cause as well as possible solutions. It is essential to note that the diagnosis stage does not under any circumstance seek to propose solutions to each and every problem or flaw detected within the company. During this part of the process we simply seek to analyze and synthesize the main problems the company faces with the corresponding root cause, as well as possible solutions. In other words, it is not yet time for the consultant or the client to make decisions. We are still in the diagnosis process.
The following tabs labeled: “Scorecard, Results, Graph 1.1” are a result of completing the rest of the tabs that cover each one of the 11 key areas. The Scorecard organizes each area and sub-area into a different tab. Each tab contains the dimensions that correspond to the area or sub-area along with its definition and a description of the level of commitment to delimit the consultant’s criteria. The individual interviews must be guided by the Scorecard’s frame of reference. This tool includes the dimensions that need to be reviewed in each area, the definition of each dimension and the different levels of commitment for each one; followed by a column in which the consultant selects the grade from a pull-down menu. The cell only allows the pre-defined values in the scale.
As the interviews are being conducted, the consultant assigns a grade to the dimension according to the company’s level of commitment using the following scale:
No commitment level = 0
Low commitment = 1
Medium commitment = 2
High commitment = 3
In case the dimension is not applicable to the line of business of the company an “N/A” grade may be given, which will keep the dimension from being considered in the area average. To validate and ensure that the grade assigned is correct; it is also important to ask for the necessary documentation and materials that will allow the consultant to corroborate not only the information that the individual responsible for the area has provided but also the level of commitment of the dimension.
Example: if we ask if security and physical specifications and policies for the storage of materials have been defined, documented and disseminated, the consultant must request the documents that contain that information and validate it by inspecting the storage area.
After the column where the grades are placed, there are additional columns that help the consultant evaluate and determine if the dimension is critical for the growth of the company despite its level of development. For example, it is possible that there is dimension with a high level of development but that does not contribute anything to the growth of the organization. These columns allow for valuable note taking and help the interviewer rely on the person being interviewed to evaluate if the dimension favors the growth of the company. This step concludes when all the tabs have been completed during the interviews.
