Italian to English: SALUTE: ICTUS, PROTEINA NATURALE RIDUCE DANNI LESIONE CEREBRALE. EFFICACE FINO A 12 ORE General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
(ASCA)
Translation - English HEALTH: STROKE, NATURAL PROTEIN REDUCES BRAIN DAMAGE. EFFECTIVE WITHIN 12 HOURS
A molecule naturally produced by the human body reduces brain damage if administered within 12 hours of a stroke. This was demonstrated in a study published by Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) conducted by researchers at Stanford University (United States).
The authors demonstrated this by administering the alfa-B-crystallin protein to a group of mice modified so as not to be able to produce it, and that consequently suffer increased damage following a stroke. The researchers also discovered that after a stroke, the blood levels of the protein are increased in mice as well as in humans. “In younger patients, the greater the stroke, the more elevated the concentration of alfa-B-crystallin”, explains Gary Steinberg, who led the study along with Lawrence Steinman. Conversely, the molecule is not present in the blood of patients over 80, for which the consequences of a stroke are, in general, worse.
According to the researchers, this protein acts as a sponge, absorbing the harmful compounds that are released into the affected area. Not only that: in mice, it also induces production of a higher quantity of anti-inflammatory molecules. (ASCA)
