The Rosetta Stone is very famous for it provided the key to slove the ancient Egyptian language. The Rosetta Stone was carved in 196 B.C. It was discovered by the French soldiers who came with Napoleon. The Frenchman Jean Francois Champollion is the one who cracked the code of the stone. The discovery of the stone of Rosette later called Rosetta stone is an interesting story.
The stone was discovered by the French troops in Napoleon's military expedition, in 1799 in Lower Egypt, when they were digging the foundations of an addition to a fort near the town of el-Rashid (Rosetta), in the Nile Delta.
It was discovered near the town of Rosetta (now Rashid), located in the Nile Delta about 40 miles northeast of Alexandria, by a Frenchman, Pierre Bouchard, on 15 July 1799. Captain Bouchard, an engineer officer in Napoleon's expedition to Egypt, was supervising the reconstruction of an old fort, as part of the preparations for defending the French from attacks by British and Turkish forces in the area. The Rosetta Stone came to light during the demolition of a wall of a wall in the fort. Captain Bouchard saw that the polished black basalt stone contained three sections of different types of writing, and recognized its significance immediately. He sent the stone to Cairo, to the scholars who also accompanied the French expedition to Egypt.
In 1801, after two years of warding off attacks by the British, and after their defeat at Abuquir Bay, the French forces in Egypt surrendered. Under the terms of the Treaty of Capitulation, all antiquities in the possession of the French, including the Rosetta Stone, were ceded to the British.
The stone is a compact basalt slab (114x72x28 cm) that was found in July 1799 in the small Egyptian village Rosette (Raschid), which is located in the western delta of the Nile. The stone contained words in three types of writing: Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic, which is a shorthand version of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, and Greek. By translating the Greek section, scholars were able to learn what the hieroglyphs meant. This enabled them to translate inscriptions inside the Egyptian temples.
The inscription on the stone was a decree passed by a general council of priests which assembled at Memphis on the first anniversary of the coronation of Ptolemy V Epiphanes, king of all Egypt. The text concerns the honours bestowed on the king by temples of Egypt in return for services rendered by him to Egypt both at home and abroad. Priestly privileges, especially those of an economic nature, are listed in detail. Because the inscription appears in three scripts, hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek, scholars were able to decipher the Egyptian hieroglyphic and demotic versions by comparing them with the Greek version.
The representation of a single text of the three mentioned script variants enabled the French scholar Jean Francois Champollion (1790-1832) in 1822 to basically decipher the hieroglyphs. Furthermore, with the aid of the Coptic language (language of the Christian descendants of the ancient Egyptians), he succeeded to realize the phonetic value of the hieroglyphs. This proved the fact that hieroglyphs do not have only symbolic meaning, but that they also served as a 'spoken language'.
Another British physicist Thomas Young worked on the translation of the stone with the French egyptologist Jean Francois Champollion.
Thomas Young, the English physicist, was the first to prove that the elongated ovals or cartouches in the hieroglyphic section of the stone contained a royal name written phonetically, in this case that of Ptolemy. Jean Francois Champollion went on to correct and enlarge Young's list of phonetic hieroglyphs and lay the foundations of our knowledge of the ancient Egyptian language in a paper which was read to the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris in 1822.
It was this discovery - that the Egyptian hieroglyphic writing system used as a combination of ideograms, phonetic signs, and determinatives - that provided the breakthrough in the translation of hieroglyphic writing. And this ability to read the ancient hieroglyphs in turn opened the door to the history of ancient Egypt and gave birth to the new discipline of Egyptology.

староєгипетську мову. Сам камінь було вирізьблено у 196 р. до н. е. Першими його
знайшли французькі солдати, які під час єгипетської кампанії прийшли до країни під
проводом Наполеона. Згодом, французькому дослідникові Жану-Франсуа Шампольйону
вдалося розшифрувати текст цієї пам’ятки. Власне ж відкриття гранітної плити з Розетти,
що отримала назву Розетського каменя, становить неабиякий інтерес.
Камінь знайшли французькі солдати з Наполеонівського війська під час походу
до Нижнього Єгипту у 1799 році, коли закладали підвалини для будівництва частини
військового укріплення біля міста аль-Рашид (яке тоді звалось Розетта) у дельті Нілу, за
64 км на північний схід від м. Александрія.
Камінь знайшов француз П’єр Бушар 15 липня 1799 року. Капітан Бушар, військовий
інженер у Наполеонівському експедиційному корпусі в Єгипті, наглядав за ремонтом
старого укріплення, яке відновлювали для оборони французів від нападу британських

Source text - English The Essay, an Exercise in Doubt
I am an essayist, for better or worse. I don’t suppose many young people dream of becoming essayists. Even as nerdy and bookish a child as I was fantasized about entering the lists of fiction and poetry, those more glamorous, noble genres on which Nobels, Pulitzers and National Book Awards are annually bestowed. So if Freud was right in saying that we can be truly happy only when our childhood ambitions are fulfilled, then I must be content to be merely content.
I like the freedom that comes with lowered expectations. In the area of literary nonfiction, memoirs attract much more attention than essay collections, which are published in a modest, quasi-invisible manner, in keeping with anticipated lower sales. But despite periodic warnings of the essay’s demise, the stuff does continue to be published; if anything, the essay has experienced a slight resurgence of late. I wonder if that may be because it is attuned to the current mood, speaks to the present moment. At bottom, we are deeply unsure and divided, and the essay feasts on doubt.
Ever since Michel de Montaigne, the founder of the modern essay, gave as a motto his befuddled “What do I know?” and put forth a vision of humanity as mentally wavering and inconstant, the essay has become a meadow inviting contradiction, paradox, irresolution and self-doubt. The essay’s job is to track consciousness; if you are fully aware of your mind you will find your thoughts doubling back, registering little peeps of ambivalence or disbelief.
According to Theodor Adorno, the iron law of the essay is heresy. What is heresy if not the expression of contrarian doubt about communal pieties or orthodox positions? This is sometimes called “critical thinking,” an ostensible goal of education in a democracy. But since such thinking often rocks the boat, we may find it less than supported in school settings. Typically, the exercise of doubt is something an individual has to cultivate on his or her own, in private, before summoning the courage to air it, say, in an essay.
Recently, with fiercely increased competition for admission to the better colleges, the “common app” essay has become an obsessive focus on the part of high school administrators, parents and students. This part of the college application requires each applicant to file a personal statement, a prose reflection conveying individual sensibility, experience or worldview.
Tutors advertise on lampposts for after-school courses to prep the college aspirant for the most seductive, winning common app. (I am delighted to see this career path opening for indigent essayists.) The problem is that, more often than not, the applicant is expected to put forward a confident presentation of self that is more like an advertisement, a smooth civic-minded con job, circumventing the essay’s gift for candid, robust self-doubt.
When my daughter Lily, now a college freshman, was applying to schools, she wrote what I thought was a perfect common app essay about her mixed attraction to the idea of melancholy. Her high school counselor, while conceding it was well written, forced her to abandon it because it might give schools the wrong impression that she was a “downer.” Earlier, Lily, whom I had encouraged to wear her ambivalence proudly, was reproved by teachers for writing papers that failed to support one side of a debate, instead arguing the validity of both positions.
I got it that they wanted her to sharpen her rhetorical ability. Argumentation is a good skill to have, but the real argument should be with oneself. Especially when it comes to the development of young writers, it is crucial to nudge them past that self-righteous inveighing, that shrill, defensive one-track that is deadly for personal essays or memoirs, and encourage a more polyphonic, playful approach. That may be why a classic essay technique is to stage an inner debate by thinking against oneself.
Doubt is my boon companion, the faithful St. Bernard ever at my side. Whether writing essays or just going about daily life, I am constantly second-guessing myself. My mind is filled with “yes, buts,” “so whats?” and other skeptical rejoinders. I am forever monitoring myself for traces of folly, insensitivity, arrogance, false humility, cruelty, stupidity, immaturity and, guess what, I keep finding examples. Age has not made me wiser, except maybe in retrospect. My wife sometimes complains that I will never admit I am wrong. Of course I do — granted, less than I should, but it’s not just because I am stubborn and hate to concede a point in the heat of argument. The main reason is that a part of me always assumes I’m wrong and at fault, to some extent; this is so obvious to me that it needn’t bear stating. In any case, I often forget to say it aloud. But I certainly think it.
Strangely enough, doubt need not impede action. If you really become friends with your doubt, you can go ahead and take risks, knowing you will be questioning yourself at every turn, no matter what. It is part of living, a healthy evolutionary adaptation, I would imagine. The mistake is in trying to tune out your doubts. Accept them as a necessary (or at least unavoidable) soundtrack.
The only danger, then, is becoming smug about one’s capacity for doubt — the essayist’s occupational hazard, to which I periodically succumb. I have found the exercise of doubt to be an enormous help in writing essays, because it lets me start out with the knowledge that I may very well not achieve perfection on the page. Then I can forgive myself in advance for falling short of the mark, and get on with it.

Не знаю, добре це чи погано, та я – есеїст. Думаю, мало хто з літераторів-початківців мріє про таку долю. Навіть у дитинстві, а вже тоді мене від читання було не відірвати, я мріяв про лаври письменників та поетів – богемних,усіма шанованих літераторів, яким щороку вручають Нобелівські, Пулітцерівські та Національні книжкові премії. Тож, якщо пан Фрейд мав рацію і ми можемо бути по-справжньому щасливими, лише коли реалізуємо свої дитячі бажання, я маю радіти принаймні з того, що хоч чогось досяг.
Мені до вподоби те відчуття свободи, що приходить від занижених сподівань. У царині нехудожньої літератури, скажімо, мемуари звертають на себе значно більшу увагу, ніж збірки есе, що друкуються обмеженими, ледь помітними тиражами через очікувано низький читацький попит. Втім, незважаючи на регулярні заяви про смерть есе як жанру, їх незмінно друкують, і, якщо хочете знати, есеїстика наразі поволі відроджується - можливо, через її співзвучність настроям та звернення до тем сьогодення. У глибині нас живе невпевненість, нас мучать протиріччя, а есе якраз і кохаються в сумнівах.
З тих самих часів, коли Мішель де Монтень – засновник жанру сучасного есе – спантеличив нас своїм «Що я знаю?» і назвав людство духовно нерішучим та мінливим, есе стало полем зіткнення протиріч, парадоксів, вагань та власних сумнівів. Це іноді зветься «критичним мисленням», яке проголошується метою демократичної освіти. Насправді ж критичне мислення системі не вигідне – надто вже воно неконтрольоване, а, отже, зовсім не підтримується у закладах освіти. Зазвичай людина має зародити у себе сумніви самостійно, в глибині душі, перед тим як у неї стане мужності озвучити свої думки, скажімо, в есе.
Нещодавно конкурс на вступ до вищих закладів освіти стрімко посилився, і директори шкіл, батьки та самі учні почали не на жарт перейматися написанням особистих есе. Цей твір – невід’ємна вимога до вступників; у формі роздумів там має розкритися їх душевна чутливість, життєвий досвід та світосприйняття.
Репетитори розклеюють на стовпах об’яви і рекламують додаткові заняття з підготовки абітурієнтів до написання якісних особистих есе, що здатні спокусити найвибагливішого екзаменатора (мене тішить, що збіднілі есеїсти зможуть хоча б підзаробити на цьому). Біда криється у тому, що від молодої людини очікують впевнену розповідь про себе у рекламному, удавано-соціальному стилі, що зовсім не лишає місця для щирих і здорових сумнівів.
Коли моя дочка Лілі, нині першокурсниця, подавала документи на вступ, вона написала, як мені вважалося, ідеальне особисте есе про своє неоднозначне ставлення до меланхолії. Її викладачка, хоча й похвалила якість твору, спонукала дочку написати нове есе, бо першим вона ризикувала зробитися меланхолічкою в очах читачів. До цього я також незмінно підтримував збалансовану позицію Лілі, а от вчителі сварили її за твори, де вона висвітлювала обґрунтованість протилежних думок, а не приставала на якусь одну сторону суперечки.
Я збагнув, що вчителі хочуть, аби Лілі покращила свою риторичну майстерність. Здатність аргументувати свою думку є важливою, та головним своїм опонентом слід обрати себе. Це особливо стосується становлення письменників-початківців. Необхідно безболісно і швидко провести їх через етап агресивної зухвалості та безапеляційності, прищепити їм різнобічний, грайливий підхід до письменництва. Можливо, саме через це класичним прийомом написання есе залишається уявна суперечка із самим собою.
Сумніви – мій незмінний супутник, що, наче вірний собака, не полишить у біді. Пишу я есе чи вирішую побутові справи – я завжди у собі сумніваюся. У моїй голові не перестають кружляти усілякі «так, але…», «ну й що з того?» - словом, різні скептичні думки. Я безупинно шукаю в собі необачність, черствість, пихатість, лицемірство, жорстокість, тупість, незрілість – і уявіть собі, досі подекуди їх знаходжу. Роки не додали мені мудрості, хоча, мабуть, легко бути мудрим, споглядаючи у своє минуле. Моя дружина інколи скаржиться, що я ніколи не визнаю своєї неправоти. Звичайно ж, це не так – хоча її слід визнавати частіше. Таке враження складається не тому, що я упертий і непоступливий у суперечці. Причина криється у частині мого «я», що постійно вважає себе до певної міри неправою; мені це настільки очевидно, що я про це навіть і не згадую. Так чи інакше, я забуваю озвучувати свої помилки, хоча точно знаю про них.
Може здатися дивним, та сумніви аж ніяк не заважають діяти. Якщо ви доведете їх до ладу, то зможете сміливо ризикувати, знаючи, що кожен ваш крок буде під ненастанним контролем. Мені видається, що вони є частиною людського буття, здоровим еволюційним пристосуванням. Було б помилкою придушувати в собі сумніви. Просто вважайте їх необхідним (або, принаймні, неминучим) музичним супроводом, що лунає крізь все ваше життя.
Єдиною небезпекою, таким чином, залишається вихваляння ними – на цю «професійну хворобу» есеїста я час від часу страждаю сам. У моїй письменницькій роботі без сумнівів і на крок не посунутися. Завдяки їм я одразу розумію, що навряд чи створю ідеальний текст, а тому можу наперед себе пробачити за огріхи та швидко стати до роботи.

I am familiar with a range of different CAT tools, ranging from the most familiar (such as SDL Trados Studio 2009, 2011, memoQ, Idiom Worldserver, Translation Worldspace) to the lesser known (such as Translation Tiger, a specific requirement from a client). For translations in the banking environment, I usually resort to SmartCAT—ABBYY's recent solution; otherwise, my tool of choice is SDL Trados Studio 2014.
Given my current academic interests, I also work with a range of corpus linguistics tools (such as CorpusSearch) and regularly apply R (a popular statistical environment) to linguistic data.
Whatever the occasion, a fully equivalent and culturally relevant translation will be delivered in time.
