Source text - English Sooner or later, your company will probably need to transform itself in response to market shifts, groundbreaking technologies, or disruptive start-ups. Some strategists suggest doing this quickly and aggressively, by making a clean break from the past and turning your firm into something entirely new. In our experience, though, organizations built for legacy markets rarely pull this off. It can take years for an innovative initiative to become large enough to replace the revenue an incumbent has lost to disruption. And if your company completely abandons its old model, it throws away any advantage it still has.
We propose an approach that’s both more practical to implement and more sustainable. It rests on two insights:
First, major transformations need to be two different efforts happening in parallel. “Transformation A” should reposition the core business, adapting its current business model to the altered marketplace. “Transformation B” should create a separate, disruptive business to develop the innovations that will become the source of future growth.
Second, the key to making both transformations work is to establish a new organizational process we call a “capabilities exchange,” through which the parallel efforts can share select resources without changing the mission or operations of either.
Dividing the effort in two allows leaders to develop a new strategy for the core that doesn’t need to make up for all the business lost to disruption. It also gives the innovative new operation the time it needs to grow. What one transformation effort could rarely accomplish alone, two together have a better chance of achieving.
IBM and Apple both took this dual-transformation approach. In the mid-1990s, IBM reconceived its mainframe business, shifting from proprietary systems to servers running software based on open standards. At the same time, it built a separate Global Services organization that became the source of its future growth. In the late 1990s, Apple repositioned its struggling PC business, trimming offerings and focusing on design. Shortly afterward, it launched the iPod and opened the iTunes store, which led to phenomenal growth.
More recently, we’ve seen the dual-track process unfolding at Barnes & Noble as the retailer reacted to the severe disruption of e-books, and at Xerox in response to the slow erosion of its core copier business. We will touch on the lessons Xerox and B&N have learned as we describe how the process works. But we’ll focus primarily on the case in which one of our authors (Clark Gilbert) developed and tested our approach: the Deseret News, which embarked on a dual transformation in response to the upheaval caused by the internet.

Secondariamente, affinché il doppio sforzo di trasformazione abbia successo è fondamentale istituire un nuovo processo organizzativo, che definiamo “scambio di competenze”, che consenta alle due iniziative parallele di condividere determinate risorse senza che ciò comporti alterazioni delle rispettive missioni e attività.
Suddividere l'impegno in due parti consente ai leader di sviluppare una nuova strategia per l'attività principale senza l'obbligo di recuperare tutto il fatturato perso a causa dell'evento dirompente. Questa soluzione concede inoltre alla nuova attività innovativa il tempo necessario per crescere. Ciò che un unico sforzo di trasformazione difficilmente potrebbe produrre, viene ottenuto con il contributo congiunto di due iniziative distinte.
Un simile approccio duale al cambiamento è stato adottato da IBM e da Apple. Source text - English Lacan posits that our sense of inadequacy is primordial—and thus impossible to banish—because it is the price we pay for socialization. Prior to socialization, we do not yet understand ourselves as separate entities, which in practice means that we are the world and the world is us. Socialization shatters this illusion at least on two different levels. On a literal level, it introduces a wedge—an insurmountable obstacle—between us and the mater- nal body (or the body of the one who cares for us). On a more figurative level, it delivers a huge blow to our narcissistic sense of being the navel of the universe. In so doing, it divests us of our infantile fantasy of wholeness and uncomplicated belonging, generating an unquenchable longing for a state of plenitude that we imagine we have somehow been unfairly robbed of: a lost paradise we can never recover but that we spend the rest of our lives pursuing. The fact that we never possessed this paradise in the first place, that we were never completely whole and at ease to begin with, does not in the least diminish our resolve to recover it. Lacan designates this lost paradise as “the Thing,” indicating by the capital T that it is not an ordinary fantasy object, but a very special Thing of incomparable worth; it is the Thing that our deepest desires are made of.4
Some of us replace the lost paradise that the Thing symbol- izes with an otherworldly paradise, which is arguably one reason religion wields so much power around the globe. But many of us go about the undertaking in the way I have outlined—namely, by finding surrogates for what we think we have lost: we pursue people and various aspirations to alleviate the ache within our being. This is why Lacan asserts that “the object is by nature a refound object.”5 Every “object” (every person or aspiration) we invent or discover is “refound” in the sense that it is always a substitute for the original lost Thing. We place one thing, one object, after another into the empty slot left by the Thing, and those objects that come the closest to reviving the Thing, that contain the strongest echo of the Thing’s special radiance, are the ones we feel most passionate about. However, because no object can ever fully replicate the fantasized perfection of the Thing, we are condemned to repeat our quest ad infinitum. We are, so to speak, always on the lookout for the perfect object that would, once and for all, grant us the unmitigated satisfaction we (fantasmatically) associate with the missing Thing. This is why we spend our lives concocting ever more ingenious ways of resur- recting it. One might in fact go as far as to say that it is because we do not have the Thing that the various things of the world matter to us in the first place; it is because we feel deprived of the Thing that we are capable of being interested in (and devoted to) things other than ourselves.

Source text - English Interest in concurrent programming has been growing rapidly since the turn of the millennium. This has been accelerated by Java, which has made concurrency much more mainstream; by the near ubiquity of multi-core machines; and by the availability of support for concurrent programming in most modern programming languages.
Writing and maintaining concurrent programs is harder (sometimes much harder) than writing and maintaining nonconcurrent programs. Furthermore, concurrent programs can sometimes have worse performance (sometimes much worse) than equivalent nonconcurrent programs. Nonetheless, if done well, it is possible to write concurrent programs whose performance compared with their nonconcurrent cousins is so much better as to outweigh the additional effort.
Most modern languages (including C++ and Java) support concurrency directly in the language itself and usually have additional higher-level functionality in their standard libraries. Concurrency can be implemented in a number of ways, with the most important difference being whether shared data is accessed directly (e.g., using shared memory) or indirectly (e.g., using inter-process communication—IPC). Threaded concurrency is where separate concurrent threads of execution operate within the same system process. These threads typically access shared data using serialized access to shared memory, with the serialization enforced by the programmer using some kind of locking mechanism. Process-based concurrency (multiprocessing) is where separate processes execute independently. Concurrent processes typically access shared data using IPC, although they could also use shared memory if the language or its library supported it. Another kind of concurrency is based on “concurrent waiting” rather than concurrent execution; this is the approach taken by implementations of asynchronous I/O.
Python has some low-level support for asynchronous I/O (the asyncore and asynchat modules). High-level support is provided as part of the third-party Twisted framework (twistedmatrix.com). Support for high-level asynchronous I/O—including event loops—is scheduled to be added to Python’s standard library with Python 3.4
As for the more traditional thread-based and process-based concurrency, Python supports both approaches. Python’s threading support is quite conventional, but the multiprocessing support is much higher level than that provided by most other languages or libraries. Furthermore, Python’s multiprocessing support uses the same abstractions as threading to make it easy to switch between the two approaches, at least when shared memory isn’t used.
Due to the GIL (Global Interpreter Lock), the Python interpreter itself can only execute on one processor core at any one time. C code can acquire and release the GIL and so doesn’t have the same constraint, and much of Python—and quite a bit of its standard library—is written in C. Even so, this means that doing concurrency using threading may not provide the speedups we would hope for.

Tipicamente, i processi concorrenti accedono ai dati condivisi utilizzando la IPC, sebbene possano utilizzare anche la memoria condivisa quando il linguaggio o le sue librerie lo consentono.
Un altro tipo di concorrenza è quella basata sulla “attesa concorrente” piuttosto che sull'esecuzione concorrente; è l'approccio utilizzato per implementare l'I/O asincrono.
Python è in grado di supportare l'I/O asincrono a livello basso (con i moduli asyncore e asynchat). Il supporto di livello alto è fornito tramite la piattaforma esterna Twisted (twistedmatrix.com).
