Bio
A gender and cultural anthropologist, I am particularly versed in linguistic anthropology (semiotics, post-structuralism) and the anthropology of gender, family/kin; anthropology as applied to the analysis of film, media, visual systems and codes, and economic and political anthropology. Professionally, most of my translation experience has been in the fields of law, academics and business. I have authored a children’s book and a screenplay, as well.

In the field in Africa and Mexico, I have worked with applied anthropology, in particular, participatory research methodologies, gendered empowerment and social change, as well as women’s (social, cultural, economic) rights, applying economic and other indicators and methods to analyze social programs according to a number of vectors.

I am currently an Ambassador for Children‘s Rights for an organization in partnership with, inter alia, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UNHCR and Interpol aimed at disseminating knowledge of children’s rights and environmental awareness. I have teaching experience with young children and have tutored at the university level.

I have experience as an editor for Oxford University Press (Mexico), for whom I edited academic materials (textbooks), translated various texts (related to, inter alia, human rights, gender and development studies) and also translated an autobiography for publication by OUP.

I am particularly interested in academic work and books, and translations related to anthropology, social development, gender and education; legal texts are always welcome, particularly as related to EC Law (see below).

MAIN EXPERIENCE (6+ years) as a writer, editor and translator: translation of draft law notifications for the European Commission (communications from the Governments of Sweden, France & Belgium, and Spain) & translation/editing of literature – in particular, autobiographies and culture-related texts.

Native bilingual upbringing English/Swedish

*ATA (American Translators Association) Member 244986

I have studied with Julia Kristeva and have specialist knowledge of post-structuralist semiotics (as applied to) Hannah Arendt, Colette; gendered analysis of cultural theory, also (feminist, Christian) theology and religion as related to social change, masculinities.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

ACADEMIC SPECIALIZATIONS: Art History, Anthropology, Film Theory (esp. New Wave European Cinema), Fashion and Fashion History, Culture, Architecture (esp. Eastern European Medieval), Women's Studies, Religion/Theology, Postmodernism, Post-Colonialism, Anthropology, Literature (esp. Latin American, Czech, Nordic), Philosophy (Existentialist, Feminist, Post-Structuralism), Human Rights.

Sorbonne: Certificate of Advanced Proficiency in French
Institut de Touraine: French language training (advanced level)

CURRENT ORIENTATION:
A gender and cultural anthropologist, I have over six years of experience as a freelance translator for the European Commission: Swedish, French & Spanish > English (total of 8+ years translation experience). Having completed 2 recent book translations (Sv-En, Es-En), I am particularly interested in being contacted regarding literary translations, and academic texts.

=> over 1,000,000 words of legal notices (notifications, draft memoranda) for publication on the official site of the European Commission, in the following fields: mechanics (metrology), telecoms, transport (sea, air, land), pharmaceuticals, goods (labelling, etc), construction, environment, animal welfare, 98/34/EC Services, amongst others.

A perfectionist by nature, all translations are subject to thorough editing to ensure that message, tone, content, grammar and meaning are perfectly faithful to the original. Please note that I do not offer CAT tool discounts. My rates, in line with high-end international market standards, are subject to my appraisal of the text and are contingent on formatting issues and turnaround time. I will never accept a translation assignment I am unprepared to handle, nor for which quality is not paramount.

Testimony:
"Susanna deserves the highest praise for her work on a recent Spanish to English legal translation project. We used 4 translators to complete the job on time, and she was the best of them all. Intelligent, flexible, hard-working, detail oriented, and speedy are adjective I might use to describe Susanna. I dare to place her in the "gifted" category. If you want an excellent translation from a reliable linguist, Susanna should be at the very top of your short list."
