Source text - English BACKGROUND
The response of Japanese Americans and U.S. organizations to the March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami was significant throughout the U.S. The mobilization of Japanese American organizations was especially noteworthy, resulting in regional and national fundraising efforts raising more than $33 million, to date, in addition to networks of volunteers and donors in unprecedented numbers to support relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts in Japan. This outpouring of support affirmed the connection between Japanese Americans and Japan and the strength of the evolving U.S. and Japan relationship.
Stories From Tohoku: With Heart and Hope is a one-hour documentary conceived by D.F and D.N, third generation Japanese Americans who were moved by the unfolding stories of Japan’s people; their courage, heroism, strength and sacrifice. They share a belief in the power of storytelling to capture the voices of the people of Japan whose lives were changed forever on March 11, and of Americans of Japanese ancestry whose familial ties to Japan provide a multi-generational bond between the two countries. Immediately following the Tohoku disaster, dozens of Japanese American-led non-profit organizations began raising money for relief and recovery. Unlike the Red Cross and other global relief organizations, these groups are not emergency relief agencies, but rather organizations that serve Japanese Americans in the U.S. These Japanese American-funded efforts and the NGOs and programs they are supporting provide the common thread for Stories from Tohoku.
DOCUMENTARY OVERVIEW
Stories From Tohoku is comprised of five documentary vignettes that reflect different themes. Rebuilding includes stories of a Michelin 3-star chef in Tokyo who promotes agribusiness in the Tohoku area; a man swept away in his car by the tsunami and saved by rescue workers who now dedicates his life to helping his community; and the community of Ishinomaki gathering for a food festival to showcase locally grown and produced products. Children and Families follows a delegation of Northern Californians and Hawaiians led by Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi and sumo great Jesse Takamiyama, as they spread cheer and the aloha spirit to children and families in Iwaki; viewers also meet 5-day old Fuku and his mother who escaped the radiation dangers of their home near the Daiichi nuclear power plant. In the Spirit of Tohoku segment, we see volunteers from Peaceboat helping to look after the well-being of residents at a temporary housing; elderly grandmothers gathering at a community center to make friends; and mental health workers in Miyagi, who share their own feelings about the work they do. The New Ways, New Japan segment captures the enthusiasm of Japan’s youth, many of them inspired by the Tohoku disaster, creating opportunities to lead Japan in a new direction; we also talk to Tadashi Yanai, president and founder of FastRetailing who has some ideas of his own about Tohoku’s role in a new Japan. In The Power of One, we meet a linguistics professor from Tokyo, who mobilized a grassroots movement in Southern California by singlehandedly raising $62,000 and trucking supplies to Tohoku.
Stories From Tohoku will be produced for both American and Japanese television audiences and educate viewers about the deep and enduring relationship between the U.S. and Japan, the strength and resilience of the people in Tohoku and their Japanese American friends who are supporting them and committed to strengthening the historic bond of friendship and familial ties.
