Translation & Proofreading

International Law, Human Rights, Development, Social Sciences

A qualified, professional translator, who specialises in human rights and international development-related texts, I am passionate about translation’s role in the global community. With a background in translation and an LLM in International Law, Globalisation and Development, I am dedicated and reliable, and I take pride in producing high-quality work on time. I understand how - and when - to adapt texts to English language stylistic and cultural norms so that ideas can be communicated flawlessly across cultural boundaries.

Languages: I have a very high level of spoken and written Spanish and French. I developed my language skills through formal study as well as working and travelling in Spanish and French speaking countries.

Clear Communication: I have excellent communication skills. I have experience communicating with a wide range of audiences from academics to legal professionals. I maintain my skills by reading a variety of publications related to my specialist areas. I have worked in a variety of multi-lingual and multi-cultural environments and am confident adapting my communication strategies accordingly.

Terminology: Specialising in international law and development-related documents - including reports on social welfare and development projects, case summaries and contracts - I have excellent knowledge of terminology in these areas. I have recently completed an LLM in International Law, Globalisation and Development (part-time) and I regularly participate in MOOCs and seminars related to my specialist areas.

Time Management: I have worked on a range of larger projects with tight deadlines and am able to organise my time effectively. This means that you can be confident that your project will be ready on time.

IT skills: I am confident using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I use social media for both personal and professional activities. I use CafeTran translation software to aid consistency. I have experience using TRADOS, Memsource Cloud and OmegaT. I am able to work with HTML.

Development, Human Rights & International Law:

I regularly participate in a variety of MOOCs (online courses). Topics include sustainability, development, identity and conflict, and international cooperation.

In May 2019, I attended the Energy, Culture and Society in the Global South conference organized by the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH). Topics included the impact of renewable energy projects on indigenous peoples in South America, smart cities and solar irrigation.

In March 2019, I participated in the ITI Spanish Network’s Translation Workshop. This was an excellent opportunity to collaborate with colleagues and better understand how different translators might approach the same text.

In November 2018, I took part in the ITI French Network’s French Whispers event. This included a translation workshop through which we were able to share our feedback on different translations.

During the traineeship at the EU, I attended a variety of conferences organized by the traineeship office. These were provided by various international/EU institutions (EEAS, NATO, CoR, etc.).

January to April 2015: During my ICS placement I participated in training on various subjects including research planning and methods, youth advocacy, peer education, international development and diversity.

November 2013: The King's College International Development Institute Launch Conference and a seminar on Multidimensional Poverty Measurement Methodologies by Suman Seth at the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Institute.

I attended the IAPTI conference in October 2013. During the conference I attended seminars on professional ethics, clarity in writing, personal branding and cooperatives, among others.

I regularly attend the annual Language Show in London.

I have been translating on a freelance basis since 2012. I also work pro bono for a variety of NGOs, including UNICEF DRC, FIACAT, Humanium and TWB.

I have recently completed an LLM in International Law, Globalisation and Development (part-time study). Taught modules covered international law foundations and principles, globalisation and development, human rights, corporate governance and international migration. I wrote my dissertation on the Sustainable Development Goals and their potential contribution to the realisation of human rights. I achieved a Distinction for the taught element and am currently awaiting my final result.

In 2015 I participated as a team leader in the UK government International Citizens Service programme with Y Care International/YMCA in Senegal. For 10 weeks I lead a team of 10 British and Senegalese volunteers. We predominantly worked with young people on health, poverty and civil engagement issues.

February to June 2013: Translation trainee at the Council of the European Union in Brussels. I translated a range of documents including press releases, mission documents and suggested amendments. I helped update the IATE terminology database. I was able to further hone my translation skills and benefit from my colleagues’ feedback.

October 2012 to December 2012: I worked as a part-time translation intern at Kwintessential translation agency. As well as translating documents from prenuptial agreements to personal injury reports, I also proofread documents and did some project management.

September 2011 to September 2012: I completed an MA in Translation from Bristol University. This involved learning and practising translation techniques. I worked on semi-specialised translations in business (Spanish and French), legal (French) and social sciences (Spanish) fields. For my dissertation I analysed and translated four articles on social sciences topics by Domingo del Pino.

October 2011 to March 2012: I spent four months in Bordeaux, France, in order to improve my language skills and understanding of French culture.

September 2009 to July 2010: I attended Murcia University in south-east Spain for the intercalary year of my degree. During the year I attended classes in Spanish on Latin language, Greek and Roman mythology and French. I also tutored English to Spanish children aged seven and sixteen.

In July 2008 I spent three weeks in Colombia at a British Council summer school. I stayed with a Colombian family and was able to use my Spanish language skills as well as experience the local culture.

2013 to 2016: I was a member of Langley and Iver Rotaract . I was president for the 2014/2015 term and club Secretary for 2015/2016. We regularly ran successful fundraising events and participated in community activities.

2012 to 2016: I volunteered for Slough Refugee Support, a charity specialised in level 1 immigration advice for refugees and asylum seekers. This experience has improved my understanding of immigration law and issues, and the position of refugees and asylum seekers.

Over the winter break in 2010, 2011 and 2012, I volunteered for Crisis at Christmas, a charity that provides shelter and activities for homeless and vulnerably housed people over Christmas.
