Translation - English Italy's Prime Minister, Mario Monti, took to the Internet to get advice on how to cut government spending, as part of his effort to save 4.2 billion euros (US$ 5.5 Billion) by the end of the year.
Since Monday around one thousand suggestions have already been sent through a simple online form that is available at www.governo.it.
Monti took office last year and was tasked with imposing an austerity program that includes raising taxes and reforming social security. Now he is looking for ways to cut costs, in the hope of avoiding another increase in the VAT (tax on consumption).
The Italian government has used the Internet to try to be more transparent. “Complaints about the cost of the bureaucracy and tax evasion are the issues raised most often by citizens,” said Gianluca Sgueo, who coordinates the team that analyzes the nearly 5,000 emails and letters the government receives each month.
“The messages vary from complaints over a certain politician earning too much money to detailed suggestions on taxation,” noted Sgueo.
Besides seeking out suggestions from the public, Monti appointed a task force of economists this week to identify areas where government spending can be reduced or eliminated.
