There are many way to practice Buddhism, Zazen or Buddhist sitting meditation is one way. Basically it is a method of using one’s breath to settle the mind and become focused. One can cultivate a mental state of “samadi”, i.e., mental peace and equilibrium, through taking a sitting posture and focusing on one’s breath or counting one’s breathing. Sitting meditation grows out of the yoga tradition of India, was taken up by Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, and has since become one of the most important methods of cultivating “samadi” in Buddhism.

Sit in the lotus position. If you are not able to sit in a full lotus position, you can opt for a half lotus, or cross-legged sitting position.
Rest your hands in your lap.
Sit up straight, straighten your lower back, relax, slightly lower your chin.
Keep your shoulders level, relax
Touch the tip of your tongue to your the upper palate of your mouth.
Close your mouth.
Open your eyes slightly; that is, around 80 percent closed, 30 percent open. Lower your gaze to the floor in front of you.
Points to watch in practicing Zazen sitting meditation
1. The place you choose for practicing sitting meditation should be well ventilated.
2. You should wear loose fitting clothing.
3. In cold weather, you should cover your legs with a blanket to protect your legs from getting chilled.
4. You should use a comfortable sitting cushion.
5. Personally, I recommend practicing sitting mediation in the morning when the mind is fresh and the body energetic.
6. For the beginners, it is advised to practice meditation with one’s meditation teacher present.

Hello. My name is Stephen A. Woggon. I work
primarily as a teacher of English as a Second Language but also do freelance
translation / interpretation work and editing work in my freetime.
I work from Mandarin Chinese into English.
The majority of my translations thus far have been of research paper abstracts,
particularly in the field of education and Jungian Psychology.

simplified characters. Therefore I am comfortable working in texts from Taiwan
