Translation - English Mayan legend tells us how the gods Tepeu and Gucumatz (The Creators, Makers and Forefathers of the Mayan civilization) made three attempts to create man; all of which were in vain. After failing a fourth time, they abandoned their efforts. However, they decided to leave their imperfect creation on earth in order to give names to things. Man then was in effect, just as he is today. But, to the glory of the gods, they managed to create a civilization that would define the character of these people.
Infused with the vivid colours of the lakes of Atitlán and Petén Itzá, and by the constantly changing dawns and sunsets of its valleys, the Mayans and the Guatemalans of today share an outlook on life defined in terms of its inevitability, be it due to nature or staunchly upheld tradition.
