Scientists observe how oxytocin reaches central brain circuits and influences behaviour
Cuddle hormone, bonding hormone, anxiety antidote – some of the keywords used to refer to the versatile neuropeptide oxytocin, which has been proven in recent years to exercise a positive influence on central regions of the brain that control our behaviour. However, precisely how this messenger substance from the hypothalamus reaches the areas of the brain that control our feelings and reactions in social situations was completely unclear up to now. Scientists have now succeeded in tracing the very long extensions of oxytocin-producing neurons in the rat brain to their target destinations. They also observed how the targeted release of oxytocin in the amygdala region of the brain attenuates the fear response.
Oxytocin is well researched as a hormone that controls the process of birth and maternal milk flow. It also influences the bond between mother and child and, according to recent studies, our social behaviour in general, for example our trust in other people, loyalty and how we react when we are afraid. The neuropeptide is formed in the neurons of the hypothalamus, the control centre of our vegetative nervous system, and reaches the pituitary gland (hypophysis) via neuronal extensions, where it is stored temporarily and released into the blood when required. The hormone then reaches the target organs, like the womb and mammary glands, via the blood.
But how does the oxytocin reach the central areas of the brain that can control behaviour, for example the amygdala, the part of the brain where fear and stress are controlled? The long-accepted hypothesis that the hormone is released by the dendrites of the neurons in the hypothalamus and reaches the central areas of the brain through diffusion, was not confirmed by the current study. “We were able to see from brain slices that the oxytocin from the neurons in the hypothalamus is transported directly to the target area via ramified and very long axons. From there, it is released locally,” explains Peter H. Seeburg, Director of the Molecular Neurobiology Department at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. “Moreover, we were able to demonstrate, using behavioural tests, that the hormone released locally in the amygdala actually triggers a fear-attenuating response.”
The scientists used a combination of methods in their study: in addition to behavioural tests, they also availed of anatomical, electrophysiological and optical processes. They rendered the oxytocin-producing neurons (OT neurons) and their extensions visible in living animals using the photosensitive protein channelrhodopsin. “What is special about channelrhodopsin is that it activates the neuron when switched on by blue light”, says Max Planck Research Group Leader Valery Grinevich in explanation of the ingenious method used. To use this light switch, the researchers specifically introduced the gene for channelrhodopsin and a fluorescent protein into OT neurons. This enabled them to observe these neurons and their extensions under the fluorescence microscope and activate them using blue light.
In the brain slices, the scientists were not only able to demonstrate the path taken by the oxytocin, they were also able to confirm that the locally released oxytocin has an inhibiting influence on the neurons of the amgydala through the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). The researchers deliberately triggered the release of oxytocin in the amygdala of living animals using blue light, and thereby succeeded in directly attenuating a previously induced state of fear in the rats.

Hormon przytulania, hormon przywiązania, antidotum na zdenerowanie – to tylko niektóre z określeń wielofunkcyjnego neuropeptydu – oksytocyny, która, jak udowodniono w ostatnich latach, ma pozytywny wpływ na centralne obszary mózgu, kontrolujące nasze zachowanie. Jednakże sposób, w jaki ta przekaźnikowa substancja z podwzgórza dociera do rejonów mózgu odpowiedzialnych za kontrolę naszych uczuć i reakcji w warunkach społecznych, był do tej pory zupełnie niejasny. Teraz naukowcom, na podstawie badań mózgu szczurów, udało się zlokalizować te bardzo długie przedłużenia, którymi produkujące oksytocynę neurony przebywają do miejsc docelowych. Zaobserwowali także sposób, w jaki uwolnienie oksytocyny w docelowym miejscu ciała migdałowatego w mózgu łagodzi reakcję na strach.
Dzięki wielu badaniom wiadomo, że oksytocyna kontroluje proces narodzin oraz wydzielanie mleka matki. Ma także wpływ na więź pomiędzy matką i dzieckiem, a według najnowszych badań także na nasze zachowania społeczne, np. nasze zaufanie do innych ludzi, lojalność czy to jak reagujemy, gdy się boimy. Ten neuropeptyd wytwarzany jest w neuronach podwzgórza, czyli centrum kontroli naszego autonomicznego układu nerwowego. Następnie poprzez połączenia neuronowe dociera do przysadki mózgowej (łac. Hypophysis), gdzie jest tymczasowo przechowywana i uwalniana do krwi w razie potrzeby. W ten sposób razem z krwią dociera do organów docelowych, takich jak macica czy sutki.
W jaki więc sposób oksytocyna dociera do centralnych obszarów mózgu, które kontrolują zachowanie, np. do ciała migdałowatego, czyli części mózgu kontrolującej strach i stres? Przyjęta dawno temu hipoteza, że hormon jest uwalniany przez dendryty neuronów w podwzgórzu i dociera do centralnych obszarów mózgu poprzez dyfuzję, nie została potwierdzona przez najnowsze badanie. Kierownik wydziału biologii molekularnej w Instytucie Badań Medycznych Maxa Plancka, Peter H. Seeburg wyjaśnia: „Podczas analizy przekrojów mózgu byliśmy w stanie zobaczyć, że oksytocyna z neuronów w podwzgórzu jest transportowana bezpośrednio do miejsca docelowego poprzez rozgałęzione i bardzo długie aksony, a następnie jest uwalniana miejscowo. Co więcej, dzięki testom behawioralnym byliśmy też w stanie pokazać, że hormon uwalniany lokalnie w ciele migdałowatym wywołuje reakcję tłumiącą strach.”
W swoich badaniach naukowcy posłużyli się różnymi metodami: poza testami behawioralnymi obserwowali także procesy anatomiczne, elektrofizjologiczne i optyczne. Używając światłoczułego białka (ang. Channelrhodopsin), udało im się zaobserwować neurony produkujące oksytocynę i ich przedłużenia widoczne u żywych zwierząt. Kierownik grupy badawczej w Instytucie Maxa Placka - Valery Grinevich wyjaśnia tę pomysłową metodę w następujący sposób: „Wyjątkowe w tym białku jest to, że uaktywnia neurony po włączeniu niebieskiego światła.” Aby użyć tego włącznika światła, naukowcy specjalnie wprowadzili gen dla białka rodopsyny kanałowej i białka fluoroescencyjnego do neuronów produkujących oksytocynę. To umożliwiło im obserwację tych neuronów i ich przedłużeń pod mikroskopem fluorescencyjnym, a także aktywowanie ich przy pomocy niebieskiego światła.

Aby sprawnie czytać i prawidłowo rozumieć angielskie teksty prawne nie wystarczy dobrze posługiwać się językiem angielskim oraz zapoznać się ze stosowną terminologią. Przygotowując teksty umów, statutów, ustaw i tym podobnych dokumentów piszący po angielsku prawnicy często sięgają bowiem do obszarów gramatyki tego języka, które z zasady pomija się w powszechnie nauczanej angielszczyźnie i rzadko spotyka w zdecydowanej większości tekstów, od prostych listów ie-maili po wyszukane książki i artykuły.
Dzieje się tak dlatego, ponieważ dokumenty prawne zachowują kilka cech gramatycznych z wcześniejszych etapów rozwoju języka angielskiego, choć dawno wyszły już one z użycia w innych odmianach tego języka. Innymi słowy angielski język prawny jest odmianą bardzo konserwatywną, w której przetrwały elementy gramatyczne, których dziś już prawie nikt poza prawnikami nie używa. Taki stan rzeczy wynika z przywiązania do formuł i zapisów, które sprawdziły się w przeszłości, przynosząc zamierzone przez ich użytkowników skutki prawne oraz ze stosunkowo szybkiej ewolucji języka angielskiego, który zmienia się w znacznie szybszym tempie niż polszczyzna.
Obawiając się wplywu zachodzących w języku przemian na interpretację pisanych w nim dokumentów, angielscy prawnicy oraz ich naśladowcy zachowują zatem bardzo daleko posuniętą ostrożność i traktują zmiany wyjątkowo nieufnie. Z punktu widzenia twórców angielskich dokumentów prawnych jest to podejście jak najbardziej uzasadnione, ale nieuchronnie stawiające anglosaskich prawników w roli konserwatystów językowych, z własnej woli zachowujących elementy gramatyczne, których zdecydowana większość osób posługujących się językiem angielskim już nie stosuje i często nie rozumie.
Ponieważ elementy te zazwyczaj występują praktycznie w każdym zdaniu angielskich dokumentów prawnych, ich obecność znacząco utrudnia lekturę tego typu tekstów zarówno obcokrajowcom, jak i rodowitym użytkownikom języka angielskiego, którzy nie są obyci ze znaczeniem form gramatycznych, które wyszły już z powszechnego użycia. Sytuacji obu grup czytelników nie polepsza również fakt, że elementami gramatycznymi z zasady nie zajmują się słowniki, trudno więc znaleźć w nich objaśnienia niezrozumiałych zdań, a gramatyki i kursy języka angielskiego z reguły nie zajmują się cechami, które z punktu widzenia przeciętnego użytkownika występują stosunkowo rzadko, na przykład tylko w jednej, specjalistycznej i na dodatek bardzo konserwatywnej jego odmianie.

Good command of English and acquainting yourself with relevant terminology are not enough to be able to read and understand English legal texts properly. When preparing contracts, statutes, acts and similar documents lawyers writing in English often go to the areas of grammar of this language which in principle are avoided in the commonly taught English, and cannot be found in the vast majority of texts, from simple letters and e-mails to elaborate books and articles.
This is because legal texts preserve some grammatical features from the previous stages of the English language development, despite falling into disuse in other varieties of this language. In other words, English legal language is a very conservative variety, in which elements of grammar used almost exclusively by lawyers have survived. This is due to the attachment to the formulas and records, which worked in the past bringing the intended effects for their users, as well as relatively fast evolution of English, which changes at a much faster pace than Polish.
English lawyers and their imitators are afraid of the influence that changes occurring in the language have on the interpretation of documents written in English, and therefore retain a large measure of caution and treat these changes extremely wary. From the point of view of the authors of English legal documents this approach is the most reasonable, however it is inevitably putting English lawyers in the role of language conservatives, which involuntarily keep the elements of grammar no longer in use and often not understood by a large majority of English speaking people.
Because these elements usually occur virtually in every sentence of English legal documents, their presence significantly impedes reading these types of texts by foreigners, as well as native speakers, who are not familiar with the meaning of the grammatical forms which have fallen into disuse. The fact that dictionaries usually don't deal with grammar elements, so it is hard to find explanations of incomprehensible sentences in them, doesn't improve the situation of both these groups of readers. Furthermore, English courses do not usually deal with features that from the point of view of an average user are rare, for instance features occurring only in one, technical and, in addition, very conservative variety of the language.

A traditional seaside resort washed in its first wave of gentrification
Vogue may have hailed Littlehampton the “coolest British seaside resort” in 2007, but many who visit may struggle to believe the hype; the place still has some way to go before it become Sussex’s equivalent of Kent’s Whitstable. Yet, herein lies the appeal for many; with its pretty coastline, faded promenade, colourful beach huts and old-school fairground, the place still has a ramshackle charm. And, with a pair of architecturally striking, and, in the case of the East Beach Café, gastronomically lauded, seafood eateries – as well as retro chippies – it has also become something of a destination for foodies.
It may be a little hard to imagine the place as it used to be – the holiday destination of artists and bohemians such as Byron, Constable and a young Graham Greene, but Littlehampton is a good place to head to if you’re after simple pleasures of a British seaside resort – and it’s less than two hours by train from Victoria. Visit on a bright summer’s day, head straight for the seafront and you may well fall for its low-key charms.
Framed by brightly coloured beach huts at one end, and a grand Regency crescent on the other, the East Beach has views across sweeping manicured lawns to the sea. The landscape is somewhat blighted, however, by a Harvester restaurant and rows of scruffy shops off the promenade, along with a fairground with miniature log flume and bumper cars. There’s fun to be had hooking a duck, gambling pennies in the arcade or bingeing on candyfloss, but what most come here for is the East Beach Café (see p80), the gastronomic venue that put Littlehampton on the map. Nestled on the beach like washed-up driftwood, it draws diners from Brighton and beyond, and is the most apparent sign of the gentrification that might eventually see Littlehampton, with its old-school marina, quirky rusty red bridge and art deco apartment blocks, becoming Sussex’s equivalent of Kent’s Whitstable. For now, though, the town remains resolutely unpretentious, and free from the latte-quaffing crowds you get further up the coast.
That picnicking on the beach, lounging in hired deckchairs and building sandcastles are all favourite summer activities here means that the spot is still every bit the British seaside resort. The “Blue Flag” East Beach is even good for swimming – particularly if you head eastward past the groynes. Best of all the shingle fades into sand so you don’t stub your feet in the shallows.
The West Beach is more rugged, with wild dunes to the rear, perfect for a spot of secluded sunbathing or sheltering from the wind on blustery days. For natural beach lovers, this is seaside nirvana – with a long stretch of unadulterated sand, free from neon clutter, and a horizon that seems to stretch on forever. Pack a picnic blanket and a hamper, or better still grab some gourmet fish and chips and own-made ice-cream from the West Beach Café (see p80). You can also handily hire binoculars for £1, providing light-hearted amusement for bird watchers and nosey-parkers alike.
It’s Littlehampton’s low-key ambience, as well as its strong winds and busy tides that have seen it become a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing; even surfers have been heading here in recent years. In summer, there are watersports schools on both the East and West beaches, (see www.littlehamptonkitesurfing.co.uk for details). Littlehampton also hosts the Kitesurfing Championships in midsummer, which provides high-octane spectacle by day and beach-party entertainment at night. Mimo, że Littlehampton zostało w 2007 roku okrzyknięte przez magazyn Voque „najfajniejszym nadmorskim kurortem w Wielkiej Brytanii”, turyści udający się do tego miasta pewnie zastanawiają się o co tyle szumu; miejsce to ma bowiem przed sobą jeszcze daleką drogę zanim stanie się wizytówką hrabstwa Sussex, tak jak dla hrabstwa Kent jest miasto Whitstable. Dla wielu jest to jednak atrakcyjne miejsce; malownicze wybrzeże, nieco zapomniana promenada , kolorowe chatki plażowe czy staromodne wesołe miasteczko – wszystko to ma swój swoisty urok. Miasteczko to przyciąga także amatorów dobrego jedzenia, dzięki znajdującym się nad brzegiem morza restauracjom o szokującej architekturze, cenionej kuchni jak w przypadku East Beach Cafe, a także tradycyjnym smażalniom ryb.
Dość trudno jest wyobrazić sobie to miejsce za czasów świetności, gdy na wakacje zjeżdżała tu cyganeria z artystami jak Byron, Constable czy młody Graham Greene na czele. Możemy jednak śmiało udać się do Littlehampton, jeżeli potrafimy docenić drobne przyjemności brytyjskiego kurortu, a dodatkowym plusem jest tu łatwy dojazd z Londynu – pociąg ze stacji Victoria jedzie tu tylko dwie godziny. Odwiedzając miasteczko w słoneczny dzień udajmy się prosto na plażę, a może uda nam się ulec szczególnemu urokowi tego miejsca.
Z otoczonej kolorowymi chatkami plażowymi z jednej strony, z drugiej zaś imponującą aleją w stylu regencji, wschodniej plaży (East Beach), poprzez wypielęgnowane trawniki rozciąga się wspaniały widok na otwarte morze. Z krajobrazem kłóci się nieco budynek restauracji Harvester czy odrapane sklepiki przy promenadzie, a także zjeżdżalnia wodna i samochodziki w wesołym miasteczku. Możemy oczywiście świetnie się bawić łowiąc plastikowe kaczki z basenu, pozbywając się drobnych w salonie gier czy objadając się watą cukrową, jednak dla większości turystów największą atrakcją jest z pewnością East Beach Café (str. 80) – kawiarnia, dzięki której Littlehampton zaistniało na mapie. Leżąca na plaży niczym wyrzucony przez fale konar, przyciąga miłośników dobrej kuchni aż z Brighton, a nawet dalej położonych miast. Restauracja zdaje się być pierwszym znakiem wielkomiejskiego ożywienia, któremu Littlehampton, ze swym staromodnym portem, nietypowym zardzewiałym mostem i apartamentowcami w stylu art deco, może w końcu ulegnie, stając się turystycznym odpowiednikiem Kent. Na razie jednak miasteczko ciągle posiada bezpretensjonalny klimat, broniąc się przed wielkomiejskimi tłumami, na które natknąć się można w innych kurortach.
Piknik na plaży, relaks na leżaku czy budowanie zamków z piasku – to wszystko możemy robić w Littlehampton, dzięki czemu miasteczko ma wszystkie cechy, jakie brytyjski kurort mieć powinien. Odznaczona certyfikatem jakości (niebieska flaga) wschodnia plaża (East Beach) jest świetnym miejscem do kąpieli, zwłaszcza gdy wypłyniemy na wschód aż za falochrony. Po zejściu z kamienistej plaży miłym zaskoczeniem jest miękkie piaszczyste dno.
Zachodnia plaża (West Beach) jest bardziej dzika. Wydmy okazują się tu idealnym schronieniem przed wiatrem w chłodnieszy dzień czy ciekawskim spojrzeniem podczas opalania. Dla plażowych maniaków jest to swoista nadmorska nirwana – daleka od świateł i zgiełku miasta, z ogromnymi połaciami nieskażonego piasku i horyzontem, który zdaje się ciągnąć bez końca. Warto zabrać ze sobą koc i kosz z jedzeniem, ale jeszcze lepiej skusić się na rybę z frytkami i lody domowej roboty z West Beach Café (str. 80). Za funta możemy też wypożyczyć lornetkę i zabawić się w obserwowanie ptaków czy podglądanie innych plażowiczów.
Atmosfera relaksu, ale przede wszystkim silny wiatr i wysokie fale przciągają do Littlehampton amatorów windsurfingu i kitesurfingu, a od kilku lat także fanów surfingu. Latem na obu plażach odbywają się tu lekcje sportów wodnych (więcej informacji na www.littlehamptonkitesurfing.co.uk). Littlehampton jest też gospodarzem odbywających się w połowie lata mistrzostw w kitesurfingu, podczas których możemy cieszyć się podnoszącym poziom adrenaliny widowiskiem w dzień, a wieczorem bawić się na imprezie na plaży. Wielbiciele niestandardowych rozrywek wodnych mogą też wypożyczyć łódź i zanurkować w poszukiwaniu zatopionych wraków czy zaczaić się z wędką na jakieś morkie stworzenie; godna polecenia jest firma prowadzona przez lokalną rodzinę Michelle Mary, z mającym obsesję na punkcie łodzi, aczkolwiek bardzo pogodnym Ivanem za sterem.
