Polish to English: Teratogenic effects of the bacteria Borrelia sp. on the fetuses of pregnant women with Lyme disease General field: Science Detailed field: Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Klasyczne objawy chorobowe wywołują u człowieka Borrelia burgdorferi sensustricto, B. garinii, B. afzelii i B. bissetii (6, 7).
Translation - English The tick's ontogeny consists of 4 stages: eggs, larvae, nymphs and imago, i.e. adult. In its life cycle, this feeding on blood arachnid uses three successive hosts to which the individual stages are adapted. At each stage, the tick collects blood once, which satisfies its biological needs and consequently leads to reproductive processes. Larvae attack mainly small rodents, and it is at that time when those animals are most often infected with the bacteria as they are the primary food source for the pathogens of Lyme disease. After the blood has been collected, the larvae molt and transform into nymphs which are required to collect the next portion of blood for the final metamorphosis. In this case, the hosts are larger animals, both wild and domestic. In many areas, these animals are also often reservoirs of the bacteria Borrelia sp. Nymphs can also attack a human. Humans, however, are the most common target for adult ticks requiring adequate, large portions of food to produce gametes and complete their development cycle and egg production. In the biological and climatic conditions of Poland, the tick's activity begins in early March, reaching its spring peak in April and May, and autumn peak in September and October, and ends definitively with the first frosts. In addition to ticks, other ways of transferring the pathogenic bacteria are also possible. The bacteria have been reported to be transferred by botflies, lice and mosquitoes. In particular cases, Borrelia sp. can spread during sexual intercourse, and from the mother to the unborn child through the placenta (4-6).
The primary and most important form of the bacteria causing Lyme disease is spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi from the Spirochaetaceae family, belonging to the Spirochaetales order, which was discovered and described in 1982. This species of bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi sensulato is not homogeneous and exhibits large and complex genetic polymorphism, since at least 10 of its genospecies have been identified. Typical disease symptoms in humans are caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensustricto, B. garcinia, B. afzelii and B. bissetii (6, 7).
The gram-negative bacterium Borrelia sp. has a length of 10 to 30 μm and a width of 0.2 to 0.5 μm. Its cell is characterized by the presence of 7 to 11 flagella. Because of its long division time (12 – 24 hours), its life cycle has also been extended to about 4 weeks, with the ability to form endospores that survive in a metabolically inactive form for several years. After the tick's saliva enters the host's blood circulation system, the pathogen spreads throughout the body by means of blood, lymph, as well as intracellular pathways within the connective and neural tissues (6-8). In addition to its ability to encyst into endospores and penetrate intercellular spaces, as well as spread to different regions of the body, Borrelia sp. has unique immunological properties enabling the survival and development of extensive lesions in the infected organism. These include antigenic variation, which allows the bacteria to bypass the body's immune barrier, and to be present in both intercellular spaces of many tissues, body fluids, as well as cytoplasm of living cells. The presence of the bacteria in tissues can also induce natural immune mechanisms, as well as the persistence of extensive and long-term inflammations (9). In the case of Lyme disease, the diagnosis of external morphological symptoms of spirochete infection is not conclusive. This large variability in the body's response makes it very difficult to conclusively identify the disease. This is often not possible without performing specialized biochemical and genetic tests. The most important tests include serological (ELISA) and direct detection of bacterial DNA using the PCR method.
English to Polish: Nanotechnology - Researchers Use Bacteria Inclusion Bodies as Natural Nanopills General field: Science Detailed field: Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Source text - English Researchers from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) have designed a novel carrier called as ‘bacteria inclusion bodies’ to deliver proteins with therapeutic effects.
Bacteria inclusion bodies are stable insoluble nanoparticles present commonly in recombinant bacteria. They have a large number of functional proteins, which are useful in biomedical and industrial applications.
The research team, headed by Antoni Villaverde from the UAB’s Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine in partnership with the Spanish Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red en Bioingeniería, Biomateriales y Nanomedicina (CIBER-BBN), has studied the use of the inclusion bodies as natural ‘nanopills’ with a capability to pierce cells and perform biological activities. The nanopill concept is an emerging platform for administering drugs, and demonstrates the effectiveness of microbial materials in medicine.
In a multi-disciplinary study conducted at UAB, a team of scientists headed by Dr Esther Vàzquez used the bacteria Escherichia coli’s inclusion bodies as nanopills, which were packed with four proteins having various therapeutic effects. The bacteria were then made to contact with mammals’ cell cultures under conditions similar to that of real clinical pathologies, where they were able to recover their activity.
UAB and CIBER-BBN patented the therapeutic application of inclusion bodies and licensed the technology to Janus Developments, a biotechnology firm currently investing in the product development.
UAB researcher Ester Fernández conducted experiments to verify the tolerance of the technology’s administration in vivo. The study results and nanopill have been described in detail in the journal, Advanced Materials.
Translation - Polish Naukowcy z Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) skonstruowali nowy nośnik, tzw. ciałka wtrętowe bakterii, zaopatrujące komórki w białka o terapeutycznych właściwościach.
Bakteryjne ciałka wtrętowe to stabilne, nierozpuszczalne nanocząstki, powszechnie spotykane w rekombinowanych bakteriach. Zawierają one funkcjonalne białka, stosowane w biomedycynie i przemyśle.
Zespół naukowców, kierowany przez Antoniego Villaverde’a z UAB’s Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, we współpracy z hiszpańskim Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red en Bioingeniería, Biomateriales y Nanomedicina (CIBER-BBN), badał możliwość stosowania ciałek wtrętowych jako nanotabletek zdolnych do przenikania komórek i spełniania funkcji biologicznych.

- zakończenia budowy rynku wewnętrznego gazu oraz energii elektrycznej, szczególnie na osi północ-południe;
- wypełnienia przez poszczególne państwa członkowskie infrastrukturalnego standardu bezpieczeństwa dostaw gazu N-1.
Translation - English Promoting the interconnection of energy networks
1. In March 2010, the European Council should support narrowing the scope of TEN-E to cross-border projects within the EU, which are crucial for:
- completion of the internal gas and electricity market, in particular north-south interconnections;
- meeting the security of gas supply standards N-1 by the Member States.
2. The European Council should consider replacing the existing TEN-E instrument with a new EU Energy Security and Infrastructure Instrument. The decision should be taken after a comprehensive debate on the future of the EU budget. At the same time, it should be noted that cohesion policy is an effective financing instrument for the TEN-E network.
3. Infrastructure projects outside the EU should be financed from the EU budget within the framework of external policy financial instruments (ENPI, EIB, and EBRD). The EU support should be limited to the projects:
- implemented within the Energy Community.
- pursuing the energy interests of the whole EU, i.e. not impairing the energy security of any of the Member States.
- leading to the simultaneous diversification of routes, sources, as well as fossil fuel and energy suppliers to the EU.

Source text - English Q6 – Is it possible to post the foreign workers from third countries in other European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) countries?
A6 – Foreign workers from third countries may be posted in any EU or EEA country that is a Schengen zone member State (currently, a number of European countries are not Schengen Zone member States – Republic of Ireland, UK, Cyprus, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria and Cyprus).
Q7 – Why does Global Workers pay the up to 1250€ + VAT for each foreign worker hired by the employer, as long as the latter provides invoices regarding the purchase of a specified range of goods and services?
A7 – The successful socio-economic integration of the third country foreign national in the destination country is Global Workers´ greatest concern. We strive to provide an excellent service and contribute to the well-being and happiness of all parties involved – but the third country foreign worker is the party that requires most care and concern. We firmly believe that by covering the expenses deemed eligible until the limit is reached greatly reduces the risk of something going wrong. Concern with providing an excellent service greatly supersedes any concerns with profit. It´s all about people.
Q8 – Can temporary work agencies (Temp agencies) also recruit foreign workers from third countries?
A8 – Yes, absolutely and with no restrictions. From our experience, in most countries, when Temp agencies submit a request to recruit foreign workers from third countries the competent authorities often request that the agency provide signed copies of the General Staffing Agreement and may wish to pay a visit to the client with the purpose of reviewing the work location to which the foreign workers will be assigned before proceeding or giving the green light. The authorities may also want to verify what efforts or plans have been made with regard to securing accommodation for the foreign workers upon arrival.
Translation - Polish Pytanie 6.
