Business Cycles
Business cycles are recurrent but non-periodic fluctuations in general business and economic activity that take place over a period of years. These fluctuations occur in aggregate variables like income, output, employment, and prices, most of which move at about the same time in the same direction, but at different rates.
The terms business cycles and business fluctuations are used synonymously in economics, with the understanding that the word “cycles” in no sense implies periodicity. If the peaks and troughs in a cycle occurred at regular time intervals the cycle would be highly predictable. However, business cycles result from unpredictable accelerations and retardations of economic variables.
There are four phases to the business cycle as shown in Exhibit 1:
Exhibit 1
1. Peak (prosperity): The upper phase of a business cycle in which the economy is operating at or near full employment, and a high degree of business and consumer optimism is reflected by a vigorous rate of capital investment and consumption.
2. Recession: The downward phase, in which the economy’s income, output, and employment are decreasing; and declining business and consumer optimism is reflected by a falling rate of capital investment and consumption.
3. Depression (trough): The lower phase, in which the economy is operating with substantial unemployment and there is very little business and consumer optimism, as reflected by a sluggish rate of capital investment and consumption.
4. Recovery: The upward phase, in which the economy’s income, output, and employment are rising; there is a growing degree of business and consumer investment and consumption.
The four phases of the cycle are not equal in scope or intensity, and do not always come in the order shown. For example, an economy may fluctuate between contractions and expansions for many years without experiencing either high prosperity or deep depression. Furthermore, the transition from one phase of a cycle into the next is occasionally imperceptible: it may be almost impossible to distinguish between the end of one phase and the beginning of another. For these reasons, the names of the four phases should be viewed only as convenient descriptions, and Exhibit 1 as a highly simplified picture.

English to Spanish: The Salton Sea: It’s Worth Saving General field: Other
Source text - English The Salton Sea: It’s Worth Saving
The Salton Sea is a valuable resource for residents of Imperial and Riverside Counties.
It’s a drainage reservoir for irrigation runoff from the Imperial and Coachella valleys that sustains one of the most productive fisheries in the world and at the same time provides a critical link in the Pacific flyway for waterfowl and shore birds.
Since 1993, the Salton Sea Authority—a joint powers agency consisting of the Imperial Irrigation District, Coachella Valley Water District, and Riverside and Imperial Counties—has been working with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and other partners to insure the future of the Sea.
Work is now underway to make sure it is preserved for generations to come.
Some of the projects underway:
•
• Salinity reduction including enhanced evaporation systems. The Authority is seeking to construct a series of small solar evaporation ponds to evaluate their potential in reducing salinity of the Salton Sea. Desalinization has been evaluated as a restoration concept for a number of years.
•
• Detect and rehabilitate sick birds. Brown pelicans and many white pelicans die from avian botulism which occurs in the summer months. A “bird hospital” to treat sick birds has been established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
• Partnership with other agencies to clean fish from high-use shorelines. A unique pilot project removes fish from the surface of the Sea during die-off periods before the carcasses have a chance to foul the Sea's shoreline
Evaluate commercial fishery. The Salton Sea supports sport fishing as well as commercial fish harvesting
• Work closely with the Salton Sea Science Office to understand the complex nature of the Sea and to effectively guide restoration work. The purpose of the Science Office is to evaluate scientific information, communicate with project leaders and staff, develop and evaluate requests for proposals, and provide management support.

Bio
I am a native of Mexico City. I started doing translations since High School. I have a degree in Communications with a specialization in Advertising and Public Relations. I have worked in Business and Marketing for a long time. While working in these areas I have done numerous translations., always trying to achieve a loyal recreation of the source text.
However, another field that fascinates me is the transcreation, which requires of an adaptation of the text according to the cultural aspects of the target audience. I love the challenge of this field because it requires a great deal of creativity, and provides a certain degree of liberty, as long the target text is able to evoke the same emotions as the source text.
Transcreation is appropriate for marketing and advertising, because translating the exact message from one language to another is not as important as conveying it in a persuasive way in the target language.
Therefore I am pleased to use my trancreation skills in a variety of texts for websites, brochures, TV an radio commercials, slogans, posters, fliers for the promotion of any idea or product.
