Source text - Spanish Científicos del Medical College de Nueva York y del Proyecto Genoma público han logrado, en ratones de laboratorio, reparar hasta un 68% del tejido cardiaco destruido por un infarto. La técnica consiste en inyectar directamente en el corazón dañado células madre tomadas de la médula ósea. El nuevo entorno induce a estas células a formar tejido cardiaco nuevo, con músculos y vasos sanguíneos indistinguibles de los normales. 'No veo una sola razón por la que esta técnica pudiera fallar en seres humanos', declaró ayer a este diario el jefe del equipo, Piero Anversa.
Anversa reconoce que 'falta bastante trabajo que hacer antes de aplicar la técnica a pacientes humanos', pero su previsión es empezar los ensayos clínicos de aquí a tres años.
La médula ósea, abundante en todos los huesos alargados, como el fémur y el húmero, contiene células madre, células indiferenciadas capaces de formar diversos tipos de tejido adulto. Las células madre de la médula ósea se encargan normalmente de reponer los glóbulos rojos y blancos de la sangre, que mueren a millones cada día.
Pero los científicos dirigidos por Anversa, del Medical College de Nueva York, han mostrado ahora que las células madre de la médula ósea pueden escaparse con facilidad de su destino natural. Y para ello no es necesario manipular sus genes, ni comprender el mecanismo necesario para reprogramarlas. Basta inyectarlas directamente en el corazón de un ratón, dañado previamente por un infarto, para que se dejen influir por sus nuevas vecinas, se crean que son parte de un corazón en desarrollo y empiecen a fabricar tejidos cardiacos sin complejos.
Anversa reconoce que la reparación sólo funcionó en 12 de los 30 ratones infartados en los que probó el método, pero atribuye los fallos a las dificultades técnicas que implica implantar células en el corazón del ratón, que se caracteriza por un vertiginoso ritmo de 600 latidos por minuto. Los resultados se presentarán en la revista Nature el próximo 5 de abril.
Sin embriones
La fuente más eficaz de células madre son los embriones de pocos días, tanto en ratones como en humanos. Pero el uso de embriones humanos es una fuente interminable de polémicas, rechazos éticos y trabas legales. Todos estos problemas desaparecerían si las células madre pudieran obtenerse de tejidos adultos como la médula ósea.
'Las células madre de adultos son una alternativa realista a las embrionarias', asegura Anversa. 'Y la transformación de células de la médula ósea en células cardiacas no es un suceso excepcional; sabemos que las células madre de la médula ósea se pueden diferenciar en tejido de hígado, de cerebro o de músculo estriado'.
La mitad del equipo científico pertenece al Instituto Nacional para la Investigación del Genoma Humano (NHGRI), es decir, la parte pública del proyecto genoma dirigida por Francis Collins. El propio Collins prestó ayer su apoyo al trabajo: 'La aparente habilidad de las células madre adultas para reconstruir el corazón revela la muy notable flexibilidad de la naturaleza para luchar contra la enfermedad'.

Scientists from the New York Medical College and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) have succeeded in repairing up to 68% of the cardiac tissue damaged by heart attacks in laboratory mice. The technique involves injecting stem cells taken from bone marrow directly into the damaged heart. In their new environment, the stem cells develop into new cardiac tissue with muscles and blood vessels indistinguishable from healthy tissue. “I see no reason that this technique shouldn’t work in humans”, said the cardiologist leading the research, Piero Anversa, in an interview with this newspaper yesterday.
He recognises that "there is a lot of work ahead before the technique can be applied to humans". However, he predicts that clinical trials could begin within three years.
Bone marrow is found in great supply in all long bones such as the femur and humerus. It contains stem cells, which are undifferentiated cells that can develop into various types of adult tissue. Bone marrow stem cells are normally responsible for replacing the millions of blood cells that die every day.
However, Anversa and his colleagues at the New York Medical College have shown that bone marrow stem cells can easily be redirected from their natural path of development. The process does not involve manipulating the genes nor understanding the mechanism necessary to reprogram them. It works simply by injecting the stem cells directly into the damaged mouse heart, whereby they mimic the neighbouring cells. Acting as if they were part of a developing heart, the stem cells start to produce cardiac tissue.
Anversa recognises that the procedure was only successful in 12 of the 30 trials. He attributes the failures to the technical difficulties involved in implanting cells into a mouse’s heart beating an incredible 600 times per minute. The results of the research will be published in Nature magazine on the 5th April.
No need for embryos
The most efficient source of stem cells in both humans and mice is embryos a few days old. However, the use of human embryos is a minefield of controversy, ethical dilemmas and legal wrangles. All of these issues would be avoided if the stem cells could be obtained from adult tissue such as bone marrow.
“Adult stem cells are a realistic alternative to those obtained from embryos”, says Anversa. “The transformation of stem cells into heart tissue is by no means exceptional. We know that bone marrow stem cells can develop into tissue in the liver, brain or skeletal muscle.”

La guerra de rumores y desmentidos impedía saber con claridad si la posibilidad de sobre esta inminente declaración conjunta era sólida o uno más de los rumores que corren estos días por los mercados y por los medios de comunicación. El desmentido de la dirigente alemana parece aclarar la situación.
Según una fuente del Gobierno francés, el presidente galo y la canciller alemana hablaron por teléfono ayer y están decididos a hacer lo necesario para solucionar la crisis. En cambio, otra fuente de la Oficina del presidente francés han desmentido que el mandatario galo y la canciller alemana vayan a emitir un comunicado conjunto sobre Grecia. "No habrá hoy una iniciativa franco-alemana", expresó la oficina de Sarkozy.
El selectivo español avanzaba las 14:30 más del 1% gracias al repunte de más de los dos grandes bancos. La prima de riesgo española también se ha tomado un respiro y vuelve a los niveles de ayer, en torno a los 362 puntos básicos.
El euro frenó sus pérdidas contra el dólar y los futuros de los bonos alemanes tocaron mínimos de sesión el martes, después que una fuente del Gobierno francés dijo que el presidente Nicolas Sarkozy y la canciller alemana Angela Merkel harán dicho anuncio sobre Grecia hoy mismo.
El euro se negociaba plano en el día a 1,3677 dólares, frente a los 1,3641 dólares a los que cotizaba antes de la noticia sobre el próximo anuncio de los líderes francés y alemán.

L'estudi
Bozenna Borkowska inicia els seus estudis de Comerç Internacional a Varsòvia, ciutat d'on procedeix. Acabats els mateixos, a la recerca de nous horitzons, va viatjar a Brasil, país on va romandre un any. A continuació es va desplaçar a Espanya, concretament a Barcelona, ciutat que ha fet seva.
En la primera meitat dels anys 70 les seves inquietuds intel·lectuals i artístiques la van introduir al cercle de pintors, amb alguns dels quals va establir una relació d'amistat i el compromís de divulgar la seva obra. En aquest sentit, i en col·laboració amb el Ministeri de Cultura de Polònia, va organitzar diverses exposicions, tant de pintors espanyols a Polònia, com de pintors polonesos a Espanya. En reconeixement d'aquesta feina, va ser condecorada pel Ministeri de Cultura Polonès amb la Medalla al Mèrit Cultural i amb posterioritat, el Senat Polonès la va distingir amb similar condecoració.
Durant 20 anys ha estat Assessora Cultural del BBVA, dirigint la sala d'exposicions d'aquesta entitat a Barcelona. En aquesta i en el seu estudi va organitzar innombrables exposicions de pintors com Miró, Dalí, Maruja Mallo, Guinovart, i un llarg etcètera, incloent també pintors novells. Així mateix va organitzar diversos cursos d'Art Contemporani a la Sala del BBVA. De tota aquesta labor ha fet un gaudi personal, envoltada d'un món real d'art viu.

The Studio
Bozenna Borkowska began her studies of International Commerce in her hometown of Warsaw. After her studies, in search of new horizons, she travelled to Brazil where she stayed for a year. She then moved to Spain and, more specifically, Barcelona, the city that she has made her home.
In the early 70’s, her joy of intellectual and artistic pursuits brought her into contact with a circle of painters, some of whom became close friends. She became committed to bringing their work to a larger audience. To this end, and in collaboration with the Polish Ministry of Culture, she orchestrated various exhibitions, both of Spanish artists in Poland and Polish artists in Spain. In recognition of her work in this field, she was awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit by the Polish Minister of Culture. She was later granted a similar honour by the Polish Senate.
For 20 years, she has been the Cultural Advisor at BBVA, running the bank’s exhibition hall in Barcelona. Here and in her own studio, she has brought to life countless exhibitions of artists such as Miró, Dalí, Maruja Mallo, Guinovart to name but a few, as well as providing a platform for many up-and-coming artists. She has also run many courses on contemporary art in the BBVA exhibition hall. Her dedication has brought her much joy and immersed her in world of living art.
