About the ICCA Registry
The ICCA Registry is a database of information about Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs). It aims to document the role of ICCAs in biodiversity conservation and livelihoods and to make some of this information accessible to the public through a highly visual and informative website. Communities can choose whether or not their information is made available to the public.
Who is involved in the ICCA Registry?
The ICCA Registry is operated by the UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). UNEP-WCMC is working with partners to develop the ICCA Registry. These partners include the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), government agencies, NGOs, international grant-making bodies and of course, indigenous peoples and local community organisations. A full list of ICCA Registry partners can be found at www.iccaregistry.org.
How will information and data provided to the ICCA Registry be used?
Information and data provided to the ICCA Registry will be used for:
• Global and national-level analyses that document the status of ICCAs and their contribution to conservation. The analytical results and maps will be available to the public via the Registry website at www.iccaregistry.org.
• Increasing global awareness of ICCAs through a visual presence on the internet. Information, such as the name and size of the ICCA and associated communities, would be viewable through an interactive website using on-line maps.
Who will benefit from the ICCA Registry?
The ICCA Registry partners envisage benefits for indigenous peoples in terms of:
• increased awareness of the conservation value of ICCAs and ICCA governance models;
• greater engagement of local and traditional communities in policy arenas;
• promotion of locally appropriate official recognition of ICCAs.
Researchers, academics, companies and the general public will be able to appreciate the ecological and cultural values that ICCAs conserve and be better informed the role of ICCAs in biodiversity conservation.
Does participation in the ICCA Registry affect our rights to own and control data?
Data and information about ICCAs collected by or on behalf of indigenous peoples or local communities are likely, under national laws, to be owned by those indigenous peoples or local communities. Ownership rights of data or information are usually referred to as “intellectual property rights”.
UNEP-WCMC and the other ICCA Registry partners will respect your intellectual property rights, and the intellectual property rights of the indigenous peoples or local communities you represent, in any data and information collected by you and provided to the ICCA Registry. UNEP-WCMC will not use this data or information for commercial purposes, nor will it be transferred to third parties for commercial purposes. It is made clear to all users that they may not use the data and information for commercial purposes either, without the permission of UNEP-WCMC. This permission will not be given without your free, prior and informed consent.
Any information in the public domain may, at a later stage, be incorporated and adapted into new databases or products by third parties, which would then receive their own protection under the law of copyright.
