Source text - English In September 1798, after three years of self-directed study, the great mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, then 21 years old, left Göttingen University without a diploma. He returned to his native city of Brunswick to begin the composition of his Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, and, lacking any prospect of employment, hoped to continue receiving his student stipend. After several months of living on credit, word came from the Duke that stipend would continue, provided Gauss obtained his doctor of phylosophy degree-a task Gauss thougt a distraction, and wish to postpone. Nevertheless, he took the opportunity to produce a virtual declaration of independence from the stifling world of deductive mathematics, in the form of a written thesis submited to the faculty of the university of Helmstedt, on a new proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra . Within months he was granted his doctorate without even having to appear for oral examination.
Translation - Spanish En septiembre de 1798, después de tres años de estudio autodidacta, el gran matemático Carl Friedrich Gauss, de entonces 21 años de edad, dejó la universidad de Göttingen sin haber obtenido un diploma. Regresó a su ciudad nativa de Brunswick para comenzar la composición de su Disquisitiones Arithmeticae, y, careciendo de prospectos de empleo, esperaba continuar recibiendo su estipendio de estudiante. Después de varios meses de vivir de crédito, le llegó aviso del Duque de que el estipendio continuaría, siempre y cuando obtuviera su doctorado en filosofía- tarea que Gauss consideraba como una distracción, y deseaba posponer. Sin embargo, se dió la oportunidad de producir una declaración de independencia virtual sobre el sofocante mundo de las matemáticas deductivas en la forma de una tesis sometida a la facultad de la universidad de Helmstedt, sobre una nueva evidencia del teorema fundamental del algebra.
