Source text - English Like human beings, languages are born, evolve, transform themselves, and then die. Some leave behind vestiges of their existence while others don’t.
With a jargon previously limited to its own area, computer language
has moved from machine language to natural language. Now it has left its internal field to influence humans languages – the creator becomes dominated by the invention. Sciente-Fiction? No, it’s just the daily reality of those who deal with this fantastic machine that came into being to expand human memory and calculating methods. Although it seems like “déjà-vu”, we haven’t seen this film before. In our supermodern times, there is less distance between fiction and reality than our most amazing dreams may
imagine.
Science and technology create the need either for new words and
terms to name new creations or to make forgotten words reborn with new meanings. Sometimes these words are restricted to the world of jargon; sometimes the jargon takes to the world and expands itself into everyday language. The word “hardware” which used to mean “metalware or articles such as tools, locks, cutlery or utensils”, has acquired a new meaning: mechanical, electronic and magnetic computer devices, as opposed to “software” a set of programs, procedures and documentation related to a data processing system. Computer users started applying their jargons to everyday speech, and now these words have become part of the language, not only the English language but also of many other languages throughout the world. Other examples: interface has acquired the meaning of talk, and e-mail and the Internet have been spreading new words and icons all over the globe. Now we even have the e-book.
In Brazil, linguistic monsters have been created which makes
Frankenstein’s hair stand on end. Computer users add a Portuguese ending to English verbs, such as printar, startar, linkar, etc., when there are verbs in the language to translate these English words. The verb “deletar” has now become part of an updated edition of a famous Brazilians Portuguese dictionary. It entered the language not through its latin root “delere”, as
would be expected from a latin-based language, but through the use of computer-related English words. However the word “delir” already existed in the Portuguese language with the meaning of “erase” or “destroy”. The reason for this linguistic erosion? Mental lazyness, bad translations, lack of knowledge either of the Portuguese language or of the original meaning of the term in English by brazilian computer users and material writers. Or
maybe it is just a mnemonic device to make the memorization of the function of the words easier.
Borrowings happen constantly in every language, and they do help to enrich all languages. Yet, borrowings should not be arbitrary; they are justified when there are no corresponding terms in the other language.
At the rate we are progressing technologically and scientifically, if
brasilians are not careful with technical terminology, our language will be a gross mimicry of the English language. We are fated to become robots with a “Read-Only Memory” instead of creative thinking beings with the power to analyse and choose. Or even worse than that: without any trace of memory whatsoever. Then fiction will eventually become a reality, and a supercomputer such as Hal, the one portrayted in 2001, a Space Odissey, will appear to control us completely.

Com um jargão antigamente limitado a sua própria área, as linguagens de computador deixaram de ser linguagem de máquina e passaram a ser uma linguagem natural. Agora ela deixou seu campo interno para influenciar as linguagens humanas: o criador foi dominado pela invenção. Ficção-cientifica? Não, é apenas a realidade do dia-a-dia de quem lida com essa fantástica máquina que veio para expandir a memória e os métodos de cálculo dos seres humanos. Embora pareça ser um “déjà-vu”, nós não vimos esse filme antes. Em nosso tempo supermoderno, existe cada vez menos distância entre a ficção e a realidade do que nossos sonhos mais incríveis poderiam imaginar.
A ciência e a tecnologia criaram a necessidade de novas palavras e sentidos para nomear novas criações ou para fazer palavras esquecidas renascerem com um novo significado. Algumas vezes essas palavras ficam restritas ao mundo dos jargões; às vezes o jargão toma o mundo e se incorpora na linguagem cotidiana. A palavra “hardware” costumava significar “estruturas metálicas ou artigos como ferramentas, fechaduras, talheres ou utensílios”, ganhou um novo significado: dispositivos mecânicos, eletrônicos e magnéticos de computadores, ao oposto de “software” um conjunto de programas, procedimentos e documentação relacionados a um sistema de processamento de dados. Os usuários de computadores começaram a aplicar seus jargões na fala cotidiana, e agora essas palavras se tornaram parte da língua, não apenas da língua inglesa, mas também de várias outras línguas ao redor do mundo. Outros exemplos: interface ganhou o sentido de fala, e os e-mails e a internet têm espalhado novas palavras e ícones por todo o mundo. Agora temos até o e-book.
No Brasil, monstros linguísticos que assustam até Frankenstein foram criados. Os usuários de computador adicionam um sufixo português para verbos ingleses, como printar, startar, linkar, etc., quando existem verbos na língua para traduzir as palavras em inglês. O verbo “deletar” agora se tornou parte de uma versão atualizada de um famoso dicionário brasileiro. Mas ele não entrou na língua através de sua raiz latina “delere”, como seria esperado de uma língua latina, mas através do uso de palavras inglesas relacionadas a informática. No entanto, a palavra “delir” já existia na língua portuguesa com o sentido de “apagar” ou “destruir”. A razão por trás dessa erosão linguística? Preguiça mental, traduções ruins, falta de conhecimento tanto na língua portuguesa como do sentido original do termo em inglês por usuários de computador brasileiros e escritores de materiais. Ou talvez seja apenas um dispositivo mnemônico para que seja mais fácil a memorização da função palavras.
Empréstimos acontecem constantemente em qualquer linguagem, e eles realmente ajudam a enriquecê-las. No entanto, empréstimos não deveriam ser arbitrários; eles são justificados quando não existem termos correspondentes na outra língua.
Ao passo que estamos evoluindo tecnologicamente e cientificamente, se os brasileiros não forem cuidadosos com a terminologia técnica, nosso idioma irá se tornar uma imitação grosseira da língua inglesa. Estamos destinados a nos tornarmos robôs com uma “Read-Only Memory” ao invés de criativos seres pensantes com o poder de analisar e escolher. Ou pior que isso: sem nenhum traço de memória sequer. Então a ficção irá eventualmente se tornar realidade, e um supercomputador como o Hal, aquele retratado em 2001, uma Odisseia Espacial, irá aparecer para nos controlar completamente.
