Source text - Indonesian Penuaan adalah suatu proses alami yang terjadi pada organism hidup, yang seringkali ditunjukkan oleh menurunnya performa fisik dan munculnya berbagai penyakit. Salah satu teori yang paling banyak diteliti mengenai penyebab penuaan adalah Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging, yang menyatakan bahwa penuaan salah satunya disebabkan oleh reactive oxygen species (ROS) yang diproduksi di mitokondria sebagai produk sekunder respirasi sel. ROS mampu bereaksi dengan berbagai senyawa di sel dan merusak senyawa, organel, maupun DNA melaluireaksi oksidasi. Salah satu metode organisme menghadapi kerusakan oksidatif adalah dengan memiliki enzim antioksidan, terutama superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), dan catalase (CAT) yang bersama-sama berfungsi mengubah ROS menjadi senyawa non-reaktif.
Translation - English Ageing is a natural process which happens in every living organism, often shown by decline in physical performance and development of various degenerative diseases. One of the most researched theory about ageing is the Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Ageing, which states that the cause of ageing is oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) made in mitochondria as a by-product of cellular respiration. ROS is capable of damage and deletion through oxidation of various substances including lipids and DNA. One method for organisms to combat this oxidative damage is by utilizing antioxidant enzymes, especially superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) to convert ROS into non-reactive substances.
