March 9, 2011 -- An experimental, ultra-long-acting insulin given just three times a week proved as effective as daily insulin for controlling blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, researchers say.
Results from phase II trials of the drug degludec, funded by its manufacturer Novo Nordisk, are published in The Lancet.
Type 2 diabetes patients in the study who took degludec by injection three times a week had similar reductions in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) as patients who got daily injections of the most widely prescribed long-acting insulin, Lantus (glargine), manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis.

Being plugged into an iPod is a hallmark of adolescence, but a new study suggests that teens who spend too much time listening to music may be at higher risk of depression.
The study, led by Dr. Brian Primack, an assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, found that teens who reported listening to music more often — rather than using other types of media like TV and books — were at higher risk of having major depressive disorder (MDD), compared with teens who listened to music less frequently. With each level increase in music use, teens had an 80% higher risk of depression, the study found.
The study didn't measure total listening times, but based on previous data, the study authors estimated that teens in the highest-use group were likely listening to music for at least four or five hours a day

A japonesa Sony disse que seu prejuízo líquido aumentou quase sete vezes no quarto trimestre fiscal, encerrado em março, devido a uma baixa contábil de US$ 4,4 bilhões em ativos por impostos diferidos. A companhia afirmou, porém, que espera voltar ao azul no atual ano fiscal, após três anos consecutivos de prejuízos líquidos.
O prejuízo líquido da companhia aumentou para 388,80 bilhões ienes (US$ 4,775 bilhões) no quarto trimestre fiscal, de 56,57 bilhões de ienes no mesmo período do ano passado. O cancelamento de crédito tributário que se traduziu no prejuízo líquido é uma indicação de como o terremoto que atingiu o Japão no dia 11 de março abalou as expectativas da Sony para um ano fiscal robusto.
