English to French: Sunflowers started 50 million years ago General field: Science
Source text - English Sunflowers started 50 million years ago
Sunflowers likely sprang up about 50 million years ago in South America, suggests a fossil report.
In the current Science magazine, a team led by Argentina's Viviana Barreda of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" in Buenos Aires reports the discovery of a fossilized flower from the family home to sunflowers, daisies and dandelions. The fossil turned up in 47.5 million-year-old rock in Argentina's Patagonia region.
At the time, Patagonia likely enjoyed a balmy and wet climate hospitable to flowers, allowing for the evolution of more varieties.
"At long last, there is clear macrofossil evidence of the sunflower family at an early stage of its diversification, just where it had been hypothesized to originate," says biologist Tod Stuessy of Austria's University of Vienna, in a commentary accompanying the study. "Even if researchers accept the sunflower's origin in southern South America, it is still unclear how the family quickly colonized the entire planet and became so incredibly diverse."

English to French: The book Lorca never wrote(extract) General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English Adam.
He’s been thinking about it for years. It will rival Paradise Lost, will be his masterwork, surpassing by far his gypsy romances, his poetic evocations of the New World, the plays that have brought him renown far beyond the borders of his convulsed land.
As is his habit, he’s been scribbling notes, single words, bits and pieces of phrases, images evocative of the primeval world. He uses scraps of paper, discarded envelopes, ripped-open cigarette packages – anything that comes to hand. It has always been his method. He’s like a literary Dr Frankenstein scattering pilfered body parts around his laboratory confident all the while that, somehow, at some unforeseen time, he will know how to stitch them into something wondrous.
Translation - French Adam.
English to French: Study: Malaria sprang from gorillas to humanity(extract) General field: Science Detailed field: Other
Source text - English Malaria sprang from a single infected gorilla to become a scourge of humanity, shows an ape study.
Malaria is caused by five related microbes in the Plasmodium family and one variety, Plasmodium falciparum, kills nearly a million people worldwide every year.
In the current Nature, a team led by Beatrice Hahn of the University of Alabama at Birmingham report that genetic samples from wild apes in Africa pins the Plasmodium falciparum microbe's origin to gorillas, and not chimps or earlier human species.
""By conserving these great ape populations, we also preserve the ability to gain valuable insights into the origin of pathogenic threats that impact human populations," said Dave Morgan of the Wildlife Conservation Society, a co-author on the new study, in a statement.
The genetic analysis relied on more than 2,500 ape scat samples collected by the team. Both gorillas and chimps were shown to harbor the parasite family in the study. But the one infecting the Western gorillas in the species was most closely related to the human parasite.
