Source text - English It's early November and EA has taken over an imposing nightclub in London's not-so-stately pleasure dome, the O2, for a showcase of its typically bulging 2011 slate. It's the usual round of presentations, interviews and hands-on slots in 20-minute chunks – but one game is getting special treatment, an entire working day all to itself.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is certainly a special case. I'm not sure I believe EA Louse's anonymous and unsubstantiated claim that it has already cost $300 million to make. (Including eventual marketing, infrastructure and customer support set-up costs? Maybe.) From what I've seen of it, I'm not a total convert, but I'm also not about to declare it "a joke" or predict it will be "one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs". Let's face it, it would face some stiff competition there.
But there's no doubt that The Old Republic is a huge, costly, high-stakes project for EA, for LucasArts and for BioWare. And despite its dream marriage of the globally popular Star Wars universe with the unbounded yet unrealised potential of the post-Warcraft MMO, it's not a guaranteed success, either.
For the last two years, the Old Republic publicity machine has been content to stress what makes it different from the competition – namely its licence and BioWare's fully-voiced storytelling style – but its qualities as an MMO remained vague at best. Perhaps that was wise; BioWare is a respected RPG studio, but hardly a titan of online gaming, and it had some catching up to do.

Lo cierto es que Star Wars: The Old Republic es un caso especial. No sé si fiarme demasiado de las palabras de «EA Louse», el anónimo ex empleado de EA que aseguraba que el desarrollo de este juego lleva fundidos la friolera de 300 millones de dólares (¿Seguro? ¿Tanto dinero? Igual si contamos los futuros costes de marketing, infraestructura y atención al cliente, pero vaya...). Lo que he podido ver hasta ahora no me convence del todo, pero yo no llegaría al extremo de considerarlo «una broma pesada» ni aventurar que será «uno de los mayores fracasos de la historia de los MMO». Francamente, no faltan candidatos mucho más merecedores de ese título.
Lo que está claro es que The Old Republic es un proyecto enorme, carísimo y de alto riesgo para EA, LucasArts y BioWare. Y, a pesar de lo prometedora que suena la combinación del universo de La guerra de las galaxias con el inmenso potencial (tan desaprovechado) de los MMO en la era post-Warcraft, no se puede decir que tenga el éxito asegurado.
Desde hace un par de años, la maquinaria propagandística de The Old Republic se ha limitado a insistir en las cualidades que lo distinguen de la competencia, es decir, la licencia y el demostrado buen hacer de BioWare a la hora de contar historias. Sin embargo, apenas sabemos nada sobre sus cualidades como MMO. Hasta cierto punto, es comprensible: BioWare tiene todo nuestro respeto como creador de juegos de rol, pero no es ningún gigante de los juegos online y tiene mucho que demostrar en este ámbito.

Étape 1 : Récolte
Pour devenir le Giorgio Armani d’Éorzéa et crouler sous les gils, achetez un outil de récolte. Foncez à l’auberge du coin pour prendre un mandat de botaniste novice. Activez ledit mandat sur l’éthérite correspondante, puis rendez-vous ensuite sur les points de récolte pointés sur votre carte. Là, un mini-jeu se met en route. Il s’agit généralement de « deviner le bon moment de récolte » en observant les indications de type « le travail se déroule bien / moins bien / mieux ». Bravo, vous avez des ressources.
Étape 2 : Synthèse
Passage délicat ! Achetez des outils d’artisan, équipez-les, puis lancez la synthèse. Dans FFXIV, vous n’avez pas de « libre de recettes ». Vous devez deviner quels matériaux vous permettront de créer un chapeau, ou n’importe quoi d’autre, puis le jeu se lance. Observez la couleur de la sphère qui repose sur votre établi. Blanche, ce sera bon, orange, moyen, et si elle clignote, « attendez » un tour, tout en veillant à ne pas faire tomber la qualité de votre objet à 0. Courage.
Étape 3 : Pognooon !
Si vous n’avez pas foiré votre synthèse et perdu tous vos matériaux (sinon c’est pas drole), vous avez créé un objet ! Vite, mettez-le en vente ! TOUT se vend dans ce jeu. Que vous proposiez una armure 8 ou une simple bobine de fil de coton, vous trouverez un client. Quand vous serez un boss de l’artisanat, vous pourrez même payer un bot pour tenir votre boutique en ville. À vous les gils et les femmes vénales ! Bravo !

Primera fase: Recolección
Si quieres convertirte en el Giorgio Armani de Eorzea y ganar dinero hasta que te salgan guiles por las orejas, empieza por comprar herramientas de recolección. Acto seguido, ve a la posada más cercana en busca de una misión (levequest) de botánico principiante. Activa la misión mediante la Aetherite correspondiente y, acto seguido, dirígete a los puntos de recolección que aparecerán en el mapa. Cuando llegues a uno, se pondrá en marcha un mini-juego. Por lo general, se trata de adivinar el mejor momento para recolectar basándose en las pistas que vayan apareciendo, en plan: «te estás acercando», «te estás alejando», «esto promete», etcétera. Si todo ha ido bien, conseguirás los materiales. ¡Enhorabuena!
Segunda fase: Síntesis
¡Atención, esta es la fase más delicada! Compra un kit de herramientas de artesanía, equípate con ellas e inicia el proceso de síntesis. En FFXIV no hay «recetarios», así que tendrás que adivinar por tu cuenta qué materiales necesitas para crear un sombrero, o lo que quieras fabricar. Cuando estés listo, comenzará otro mini-juego. Fíjate en el color del orbe que flota sobre la mesa de trabajo. Si se pone blanco, todo va bien. Si se pone naranja, regular. Si parpadea, espera un turno y trata de evitar que la calidad del objeto llegue a cero. ¡Suerte!
Tercera fase: ¡Dinero fresco!
Si te las has arreglado para no meter la pata y perder todos los materiales (en cuyo caso te compadecemos), habrás conseguido crear un objeto. Ahora, ¡ve corriendo a venderlo! Sí, como lo oyes: en este juego se puede vender de todo. Da igual que tengas una armadura 8 o un simple carrete de hilo, seguro que encuentras a alguien dispuesto a comprarlo. Cuando te hayas convertido en toda una leyenda de la artesanía, podrás incluso montar tu propio establecimiento en la ciudad y pagar a un bot para que lo atienda.
