Source text - English Because of contamination with normal flora in the nasal passages sinus aspiration has been recognized as the gold standard for obtaining representative specimens for sinus culture. As it is not practical to do repeated sinus taps and other methods of repeat culturing including indwelling catheters require further evaluation. Direct endoscopic cultures from the middle meatus have been evaluated and these show a sensitivity of 65% with specificity of 40% when considering all pathogens. When the key pathogens S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis are considered, the sensitivity increases to 79% and specificity 85%. Thus this method of sampling has been chosen, using only the 3 key pathogens to ensure the most accurate results.

Dado que no resulta práctico efectuar punciones sinusales repetidas y otros métodos de cultivo repetido incluyendo catéteres permanentes, requieren una mayor evaluación.
