Source text - English FROM PROTEST THEATRE TO THE THEATRE OF CONFORMITY?
I’ve always been a little bemused by theatre-makers who claim that after 1994, they no longer knew what to make theatre about. If the number of recent revivals of anti-apartheid-era theatre is anything to go by, some of them still don’t know.
I would have thought that for writers, South Africa is now a lot more interesting than the apartheid era when the big narrative was pretty clear. Then, it was black against white, us against them, goodies against baddies, and the only really interesting thing was how would the story end. Would it be bloody? Would the baddies be driven into the sea? Well, no. We would simply ask some of the really bad guys to say sorry, and then give them a golden handshake to go farming in the Karoo. While these latter questions have largely been answered, the story hasn’t really ended. Rather, we have simply entered a new chapter.
A society in transition has much to offer its theatremakers. There is greater complexity, more irony, many contradictions allowing for characters to be less one-dimensionally good or bad. Former heroes can display their feet of clay; one-time villains, their hearts of gold.
Ours is a society in which the answers are not as clearcut as before; where there is no single right way; where values and ideas are being keenly contested. And all of these have direct implications for the people who inhabit our society, for the story of each individual plays itself out against the backdrop of the bigger, unfolding narrative. It is here that I generally seek to locate my work: in the exploration of how the bigger socio-political narrative impacts on the individual narrative,
how that individual story in turn impacts on the macro-story, in the dialectic between the personal and the political, which, if it was relevant before, is surely still relevant today?
And yet, there are many who would say that there is no longer a need for political theatre. In the aftermath of the mass assault of antiapartheid theatre, there is almost a desperate plea for theatre to be released from the burden of politics. As if the election of a democratic government and the adoption of a constitution premised on fundamental human rights, are the magic wands by which we have attained the promised land, where theatre no longer needs to concern itself with macro-political dramas in which ordinary people
have bit parts. So now we can get on with our happy clappy rainbow nation musicals, our proudly South African, flag-waving, carefully demographically quota’d theatre, and our praise-poems about people having electricity, running water, houses, health care and the like.
After all, in a letter to last week’s Sunday Independent, the Minister of Finance pointed out to John Pilger, that gainsayer of our miracle nation, our not inconsiderable achievements: “more than 700 new health clinics, 215 mobile clinics; the child-support grant programme has added 7 million new beneficiaries; water supplied to 10 million people, sanitation facilities to more than 6 million, electricity to 16 million and more than 3 million hectares of land redistributed to benefit about 700 000 households”.
So, is there a need for protest theatre within this land of milk and honey?
To begin to answer this, please allow me the indulgence of quoting from a review of Green Man Flashing done by This Day’s critic, Max Rayneard after seeing the play at its premiere at the National Arts Festival in 2004. For those of you who did not see Green Man Flashing, it was a play about a senior cabinet minister, who, six months before the 1999 elections, is accused by his personal assistant of having raped her. If the allegations become public, they will seriously hamper the ruling party, so they send a delegation to persuade her not to drop the charges. The play juxtaposes the political interests of the ruling party against the national pandemic of www.wordviolence against women, the human rights of an individual against the
collective social good. Against the backdrop of these macro-political themes, individuals – the alleged victim and her former husband who is part of the party delegation – have to make decisions about what they will do.
Rayneard writes:
Protest theatre has struggled to come to terms with itself after
1994. The didactic agitprop forms of the 80s and 90s have
clung on for dear life despite the fact that the traditional object
of their scorn, oppressive Christian Nationalism, is virtually
extinct.
Typically then, protest theatre has directed itself at the new
scourges: poverty, crime and HIV/AIDS. And despite the fact
that none of these enemies have ears in and of themselves, too
many actors in too many productions have pointed accusing
fingers and given them a jolly good telling off. With all due
respect, it’s generally understood that crime is bad, poverty is
rotten and that HIV makes you dead. It’s getting rather tired,
having our heads stuffed with truisms.
The good news is that even though it’s taken 10 years, protest
theatre is evolving again. In Green Man Flashing, Van Graan’s
writing and Stopford’s direction conspire to infuse the stage with
the kind of subtlety a country and era as complex as ours
should demand of its theatre. It’s about time.
A friend took great offence on my behalf at the labeling of Green Man Flashing as “protest theatre”. In the review and my friend’s response, lie many of the pertinent questions about this thing called “protest theatre”.
“Protest theatre” is not unique to South Africa. Research which I
conducted for an Honours dissertation at this very institution some twenty years ago, as well as a recent search on the web both reveal that “protest theatre” is a genre of theatre that manifests itself in many situations of political conflict and social oppression, and unashamedly calls itself by this name. This is true of contemporary South Asian Canadians in Toronto who combine the political and folk theatre of India to protest against racism and violence towards women in Canada; in the anti-war Vietnamese protest theatre; in the work of Luiz Valdez and El Teatro Campesino protesting the treatment of workers on the orchards of California in the sixties; in the message theatre of the current anti-war movement in the USA, and in the protest theatre of Zimbabwe where, as in our own apartheid era,
theatre has begun to fill the gaps left by the banning or censorship of newspapers, then leading to plays being banned and theatre makers
being kept under surveillance.
For many in South Africa, certainly pre-1994, wearing the protest theatre label was a badge of honour. After all, that’s what the iniquitous system of apartheid demanded, surely? Protest! Until they began to realise that the theatre establishment – overwhelmingly white and privileged under apartheid -had, at best, an ambiguous attitude towards “protest theatre”.
Why this ambiguity?

Writing about the current resurrection of You Strike the Women,
You Strike the Rock at the State Theatre, Dianne de Beer of the
Pretoria News says it is “watershed protest theatre painful to
watch yet uplifting for the soul”. For the mainly white, liberal
audiences of the 70s and 80s, going to the Space, the Market
and the Baxter was like going to church. Watching protest
theatre was like going to confession for their collective sin as
beneficiaries of apartheid, and while it was painful to watch, the
actors were essentially performing rituals that were uplifting for
the soul of the audience. They then left the theatre cleansed
for having been spat at, and if they sat close enough, being
spat on. Viva! Viva! Go and sin no more.
Now we often hear that audiences – still overwhelmingly white
and middle class – don’t want to be reminded of those times.
It’s been suggested to me that perhaps some of what the black
character Vusi says about his experiences at the hands of the
brutal apartheid regime in my own play, Some Mothers’ Sons,
be toned down for white audiences, no matter that these
experiences are central to the choices that he makes. We’ve
done the guilt thing. So let’s move on, dammit!
Sitting in a recent performance of Sizwe Banzi is Dead, I smiled
at the many “oohs”, and “aahs” and “shames” emanating from
the sympathetic audience as the characters confronted some of
the absurdities of apartheid. What once was protest theatre,
has now become theatre of nostalgia: good as history lessons,
gentle reminders of what things used to be like, but lacking the
edge that the immediacy of the apartheid environment would
have provoked.

This brings me to the second point of ambiguity. While it is
hardly ever articulated boldly, there is a sense that “protest
theatre” was regarded as inferior theatre, theatre that wouldn’t
stand the tests of good theatre such as universality and
timelessness.
At best, “protest theatre” – or that which was so classified by
the pencil test of white critics, academics, practitioners and
commentators at the time – was regarded at best as
understandable and even necessary at the time, but infinitely
limited. While it might have had political validity, “protest
theatre” was a bit of an embarrassment, like an unsophisticated
relative from the country, an assault on the establishment’s
sense of theatre aesthetics and practice.
It is true that generally, anti-apartheid theatre, particularly that
which was created without the influence of trained, generally
white practitioners like Barney Simon, lacked in theatrical
expertise. But this should hardly have been surprising given
that apartheid education denied black people access to the arts
at school level, that career opportunities for black performers
were extremely limited in the performing arts council era and
that tertiary training institutions with drama departments were
generally inaccessible. As a person of colour, I had to apply for
a permit to attend UCT, a white university. To get such a
permit from the Department of Coloured Affairs, I had to do a
subject not offered by the University for Wasted Coloureds –
that’s UWC. For me, that subject was drama, and I had to do it
as a major. So, thanks to apartheid, I’m still a struggling artist
whereas I could’ve been an accountant heading up a BEE
company!
Some of the characteristics of “poor cousin” protest theatre
were
a.
the plays were didactic, with little room for interpretation.
The message was the thing; theatre was simply the vehicle.
b.
the form was generally a storytelling one, with actors
addressing the audiences directly, often in declamatory style
c.
actors usually played a variety of roles in the storytelling
process
d.
there were no large sets, or multiple props or fantastic
costumes because of a lack of resources, but also to the
make the play portable
e.
actors were generally untrained; the combination of raw
talent and the proximity of the situations being portrayed to
their own lives, accounted for the credibility of the pieces
f.
generally, the characters were closer to caricatures
representing types, rather than multi-layered characters
g.
many pieces of protest theatre combined the disciplines of
music, dance and theatre
h.
the piece would be performed in community halls where they
would be well-received by the audiences who related directly
to their themes, and when the same piece would sometimes
be performed in formal theatres where the life experience of
the audiences would be other
i.
the plays were often workshopped in accordance with the
principles of democracy rather than have one writer as the
all-seeing eye or brain
While the local theatre establishment would be dismissive towards
“protest theatre”, for being too political and not sufficiently
theatrical, these characteristics of “protest theatre” would not be
too dissimilar to the protest theatre of Vietnam, the barrios of
South America, the Spanish farmworkers in California and even
the educated anti-war activists in the USA. The themes of “protest theatre” might not have had resonance with privileged audiences in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, but they would have struck a chord with people struggling against injustice and oppression in other parts of Africa, in the Middle East, in Asia and South America.
At the same time, the plays of Neil Simon, Robert Bolt and Sam
Sheppard might be universal for the middle class audiences of
London, Cape Town and New York, but would have little
resonance with the life experiences of the underclasses of India,
the Democratic Republic of Congo or Brazil.
The point is that notions of universality and timelessness are not
absolutes; they are class bound, intimately linked to life experience, wealth, education, exposure to the arts, or lack
thereof. If this is true, then the dismissive or ambiguous attitudes to protest theatre by the theatre establishment in our country, are largely a reflection of the prejudices of class and privilege.
If the arts, and theatre in particular, are reflections of the
conditions in which they are created, then given the nature and
impact of apartheid, the rise of protest theatre in our country was inevitable. What was equally inevitable, given apartheid
education, was that generally, protest theatre would lack the
theatrical sophistication of the privileged theatre establishment.
But, was all theatre that had anti-apartheid themes “protest
theatre”? Or was it only the theatre made primarily by black
people? Is all theatre with political themes that are critical of the
status quo necessarily “protest theatre”? A quote on the net states that Mary Benson refused to pigeonhole (Barney) Simon’s or Fugard’s plays simply as protest theatre. What made their theatre “not protest theatre”? What was the implied criticism of “protest theatre”? Benson quotes Barney Simon as follows “…he said we should go into people’s lives, their souls, their ways of life, and if it brings aspects of the struggle then that’s okay. But it’s good if it can go beyond just protesting against the horrors and inspire people to function constructively.” Is it not protest theatre if the characters are more layered, even if the themes are primarily antiapartheid in nature? If the play goes beyond protesting the horrors and “inspires people to function constructively”, is it no longer “protest theatre”? Is it more acceptable when the same things are explored and said by three-dimensional characters, than by actors speaking these things directly to an audience? When it is more subtle, less in-your-face, does that make theatre, “theatre” as opposed to “protest theatre”?

The third important factor in the development of “protest theatre” was the international community. Not only did international funders provide the resources for the
generation of anti-apartheid theatre, but these plays were
welcomed in the capitals of Western Europe and North America at a time when the international sanctions and disinvestments
campaigns were at their height.
Notwithstanding the ambiguity of local audiences – “it’s painful but good for the soul” and the theatre establishment – it’s not
universal, timeless or good theatre -ironically, international
audiences greeted anti-apartheid theatre enthusiastically. Was it
their liberal abhorrence of apartheid that made them romanticize
the theatre of the time? Perhaps. Did they patronize those forms
of South African theatre because of their commitment to the moral cause of Mandela and black South Africans? Maybe. Or was it a genuine acceptance of this combination of form and content that was so different to what they were used to? Whatever, the
international community provided significant impetus towards the creation of further “protest theatre” for international export, so that the Market Theatre and Fugard became – and remain -the country’s best-known performing arts brands internationally.
Given the preceding discussion about the protest theatre of the
apartheid era, the questions that arise are: who determines what is protest theatre? Is it the practitioners thereof? Is it critics?
Academics? Is there a list of objective criteria by which to evaluate or label theatre? And, what is the point of such labels anyway? Does it serve theatre? Does it help audiences? Given the antipathy towards the notion of “protest theatre” -hence my friend’s response to This Day review of Green Man Flashing -is it useful to speak of protest theatre now? Or will it turn off audiences? Or make some critics reach for their vomit bags? If the conditions exist for protest theatre, should we call it something else, or do we infuse protest theatre with
new meaning, that would rehabilitate it for traditional theatre
audiences since now it would be directed towards a black
government and its partners, as opposed to the apartheid regime and its beneficiaries?
I ask these questions not because I have the answers to them, but because it would appear that the attitude to politically theatre provokes contradictory, sometimes hypocritical responses, reflecting superficial emotional, political or class prejudices, rather than rationality or intellectual rigour.
Why are these questions important? It is not simply an academic
exercise to define protest theatre, but rather to understand how we need to respond to the emergence of the political theatre of our times.
Do we pour new wine into old wineskins? Will labels of the past hold for our current times? Will it facilitate or inhibit the development of politically critical theatre in the current dispensation? Indeed, is it precisely because of the ambiguous, dismissive attitudes towards “protest theatre” that our current theatre is generally so anemic, so supportive of, so aligned to the political status quo, so unquestioning?
Or is it that we simply have nothing to protest about?
Allow me briefly to present a few statistics other than the ones quoted earlier from the Minister of Finance:
We have two definitions of unemployment in our country:
a.
limited definition: those of economically active capacity who still
look for work and
b.
an expanded definition: those who have been so discouraged,
that they no longer look for work.
In terms of the limited definition, we have an unemployment rate of
26%, while the broader definition brings us closer the reality of 41%
of our economically active population being unemployed. We had 3 million unemployed people in 1994; today – according to the limited definition, we have 4,5 million, but 8,5 million according to the broad definition. For all the concerns about affirmative action, 87,5% of the unemployed are African men and women, followed by 7,5% coloured, 2,3% Indian and 2,7% white.
In the Western Cape, unemployment is 24%, or roughly 500 000 people, of whom, 80% are young people between 20-26. This is the worst province for African males to find work with only 2 out of every 100 finding employment.
Of the 11,6 million people who have jobs, more than 60% earn R2500 or less per month. Of the total of 7,8 million African workers, 72% earn between R1-R2500 per month.
After Brazil, South Africa has the highest rate of inequality. The
measurement of poverty in our country indicates that 45% of our citizens – 18 million people – are deemed to be poor. In 2000, the poorest 50% of the country’s households received a mere 1,6% of the total income, down from 1,9% five years earlier. Poor people are becoming even poorer. By contrast, 6% of our population captures 40% of earned income. According to the Sunday Times, we boast at least 20 billionaires and 130 people worth more than R100 million each. In the last year, we created 5000 new dollar millionaires, yet 50% of our country’s households get by on R20 per day or R600 per month.
Notwithstanding these levels of poverty, government officials who are paid to be at the coalface of alleviating poverty, are primarily responsible or stealing from the poor. According to a newspaper report earlier this year, 37 000 public servants are under investigation for fraud, with fraud and corruption costing government’s social grants system R1,5 billion per year.
To continue the crime theme, in the last Crime Statistics released by government, we are told that we have 19 800 murders per year. This is the lowest we’ve had since 1994, yet it still amounts to 53 people each day. In countries not at war, only a Columbian stands a better chance of being murdered than a South African. There are about 4,5 million registered firearms in South Africa and estimates are of a further 500 000-1 million unregistered firearms.
52 700 women were raped in the last reported year, or 144 per day.
But that’s only the reported rapes. 41% of rape victims are children,
with 15% of all reported rape victims being children under 11, and
26% of children aged 12-17. 58 children are victims of rape every
single day.
If that’s not enough yet, here are some AIDS statistics. In 2004, it was estimated that 311 000 people died of AIDS, comprising 44% of all deaths in South Africa in that year. That’s more than 850 people per day. Among 15-49 year-olds, it is estimated that 70% of all deaths are attributed to AIDS. One report indicated that the average person goes to funerals twice per month in South Africa, meaning that one person knows at least 24 people who die of AIDS each year.
Now, given these statistics – which, in terms of death is of genocidal proportions – and given that behind every single one of those statistics, there is at least one human story, the question that screams to be asked is “WHY IS THERE NOT MORE THEATRE OF PROTEST?”, but not just theatre of protest, theatre that expresses OUTRAGE at the daily assaults on the fundamental human rights and freedoms of the majority of our fellow citizens. Why? Why?
Because we still feel a bit squeezy about “protest theatre?”?
Because that’s not what our current, middle class, privileged, still
primarily white audiences want? Because we’re afraid that we might not access public funds from the new gatekeepers of freedom of creative expression at the NAC and the Lottery? Because we are concerned that current theatre managements and festivals that are dependent on public funding might decline our work? Because we’re too guilty about being past beneficiaries of apartheid so feel we don’t have a right to be critical now? Because we don’t want to be labeled racists or fellow travelers of the DA or sellouts or traitors of the revolution? Because we worry that the politically correct international community to whom we might want to export our works might not like plays that are critical of the darling, miracle nation? Because we have friends, family and comrades in government?
After each of the performances of Green Man Flashing, I had
Comments Books for audiences to record their responses to the play, much like people do at museums or art galleries. One of the
recurring comments was that it was a “courageous” play, a “brave” play. This comment also came from Maishe Maponya, himself no shrinking violet as a playwright in the 70s and 80s.
I find these comments rather disturbing because it is less a comment on the play than on our society. As in Zimbabwe today, so it was in the apartheid era: then, one really to be brave to do theatre. One’s work could be banned. You could be arrested. You could be detained. For goodness’ sake, I was arrested for doing a piece of anti-migrant labour street theatre in Claremont Main Road because we constituted an illegal gathering. We knew that we could be arrested, but we did it anyway. The People’s Festival that we were planning to have at the end of 1985 during the state of emergency was banned two days before it was to happen as it was deemed a threat to national security. We used to have meetings in the kombi of one of the committee members but that didn’t stop some of the committee from being detained without trial for a while.
Now, we have a Constitution that guarantees us the right to freedom of creative expression, and more than ten years after the dawning of democracy, we consider it brave for a playwright to be doing a play like Green Man Flashing. What does it say about our society? About our government’s sensitivity to criticism? About the self-censorship that has become endemic to our society? What does it say about our democracy? What does it say about our theatre industry? About us as writers, theatre-makers?
Theatre -like all art, education, the media and other institutions of socialization – inhabits the realm of hegemonic conflict, the battle to provide leadership with respect to ideas, values, worldviews, ideological assumptions to inform the development of our society and of our own individual lives. Whether we like it or not, whether we acknowledge it or not, the act of making theatre is essentially a political act. What we choose to make theatre about, and what we decide to leave out, who we decide to do theatre for, which audiences and at which theatres or buildings we do theatre, are in essence, politically strategic choices. However we may wish theatre to be apolitical, what we do theatre about, where we do it, and for whom, serve to reinforce or challenge dominant values, beliefs, ideas.
One of the few theatre-makers who has remained true is Pieter-Dirk Uys. He has aimed his barbs at the current wielders of power as much as he did to the previous government. And he is active as a citizen, not just a theatre-maker, writing letters to the newspapers –
as he did yesterday – to protest against the impending censorship of the media. Despite the political themes, his work is as popular today as it was then.
Is he a protest theatre practitioner? Is Green Man Flashing an
evolved piece of protest theatre? I don’t know. And, quite frankly, I don’t care. I do not set out to write a piece of protest theatre; I set out to write a piece of theatre that has resonance for contemporary South African audiences, to make them think and perhaps to make them feel.
When the audience discussed Green Man Flashing after the reading during the PANSA/UCT Drama School Festival of New Writing, I remember someone saying that it was a fine play, but that it wouldn’t get an audience. People were just not interested in political theatre anymore. The reality though, was that when it premiered on the Fringe of the National Arts Festival the following year, we had to turn people away at the door. When it played at the Baxter last year, it played to 77% paying audience capacity.
I wonder if we as the theatre community are not engaged in self-
fulfilling prophecies. It is not a case that we have nothing to write about or that audiences don’t want political theatre; perhaps it is we – unlike the likes of Pieter Dirk Uys – who simply don’t have the balls to take on contemporary issues, and so we become part of the problem for the majority of our country’s inhabitants, conformed to the status quo, buying into the pursuit of personal wealth notwithstanding the conditions of our fellow citizens, immune to suffering and poverty due to our own comfort zones. In the process, we compromise the cathartic role that theatre could play, and must play in a society in transition and which is as traumatized as ours. And we compromise democracy when we retreat and do not engage through our work and through our actions as citizens in giving meaning to, and in defending our constitutional freedoms, allowing others to make democracy in their self-serving image.
For the sake of our democracy, for the sake of the majority of our country’s inhabitants, for the sake of the society in which we live, for the sake of the society which our children will inherit, it is imperative that, whatever we call it, we see the rise of theatre that boldly, unequivocally, unashamedly speaks truth to the powers that be.
I’d like to end with a poem which is my personal mantra as an
artist/playwright and which is one of the poems included in Mixed
Metaphors.

Siempre me han desconcertado los dramaturgos que afirman que después de 1994 ya no supieron sobre qué hacer teatro. Si vamos a juzgar por la cantidad de reestrenos en contra del apartheid, hay muchos de ellos que todavía están en la misma situación.
Se me ocurre que, para los escritores, Sudáfrica es ahora un lugar más interesante que durante el apartheid. En ese entonces, la narrativa importante era bastante obvia: el negro contra el blanco, nosotros contra ellos, los buenos contra los malos; y lo único que mantenía la atención era cómo terminaba la historia: ¿tendrá un final sangriento? ¿lanzaremos a los malos al mar? No es lo que queremos, en realidad. Pero sí nos gustaría decirles a los más malos que nos pidan perdón y luego darles una buena indemnización para que se vayan a cultivar al Karoo. Así, los antiguos héroes pueden mostrar sus pies de barro y los que alguna vez fueron villanos, sus corazones de oro. La nuestra es una sociedad en donde las respuestas ya no son tan tajantes, no existe una sola manera correcta, y los valores y las ideas se debaten. Estos cuestionamientos influyen en la gente en general y en la historia individual de cada uno. Al mismo tiempo, la gran narrativa se abre como telón de fondo. Es precisamente en este espacio donde busco ubicar mi trabajo: en la exploración del impacto que produce la narrativa sociopolítica en la narrativa individual; y cómo esa historia individual, a su vez, repercute en la macro historia; y en la dialéctica entre lo personal y lo político, que si bien era relevante en el pasado cabría preguntarse si todavía lo es.
Sin embargo, en opinión de muchos ya no existe la necesidad de un teatro político. Luego de la invasión de representaciones en contra del apartheid, surgió una especie de ruego desesperado por tener un teatro sin carga política. Como si las elecciones democráticas y la constitución basada en los derechos humanos fundamentales fueran las varitas mágicas para llegar a la tierra prometida: ese lugar donde ya no es necesario un espectáculo involucrado con dramas de la macro política en los que la gente común apenas participa. Parecería que ahora podemos continuar con los musicales happy clappy de la nación del arco iris; con nuestra bandera sudafricana flameando orgullosa y los poemas de alabanza sobre gente que tiene electricidad, agua corriente, casas, salud y demás.
Al fin y al cabo, en una carta publicada la semana pasada en el Sunday Independent, el Ministro de Finanzas apuntó contra John Pilger, el detractor del milagro de nuestra nación, al enumerar una serie de logros para nada despreciables: "más de setecientos nuevos centros de salud, doscientos quince dispensarios móviles, siete millones de niños adicionales al programa de subsidios para la infancia, suministro de agua para diez millones de personas, cloacas para más de seis millones, electricidad para dieciséis millones y la redistribución de tres millones de hectáreas para beneficio de setecientos mil hogares”.
La pregunta que nos hacemos, entonces, es si existe la necesidad de un teatro de protesta en esta tierra de abundancia.
Para comenzar a responder, permítanme citar la crítica que hizo Max Rayneard para This Day, luego de asistir al estreno de la obra “Luz verde” en el Festival de las Artes Nacionales en 2004. Para quienes no la conocen, la obra trata sobre un alto funcionario de gobierno a quien seis meses antes de las elecciones de 1999 lo acusan de haber violado a su asistente personal. Si la denuncia sale a la luz, el partido gobernante se verá seriamente obstaculizado. Por eso, envían una delegación para persuadir a la víctima de que no retire los cargos. En la obra se presentan los intereses políticos del partido gobernante en oposición a la pandemia que significa la violencia de género, y los derechos humanos del individuo en contraposición al bien común de la sociedad. En este escenario de temas macro políticos, los protagonistas, que son la presunta víctima y su exmarido que forma parte de la delegación del partido, tendrán que decidir qué hacer.
Rayneard escribe:
Después de 1994, el teatro de protesta ha hecho enormes esfuerzos para reconciliarse consigo mismo. La forma didáctica del agitprop, de las décadas de los ochenta y noventa, ha intentado sobrevivir a pesar de que el nacionalismo cristiano opresivo, objeto tradicional de su odio, se ha extinguido prácticamente.
Es común que el teatro de protesta se haya dirigido a nuevos flagelos como la pobreza, el crimen y el VIH/SIDA. Y a pesar de que ninguno de estos enemigos tiene oídos para escuchar, diversos actores de muchas producciones los han señalado con el dedo índice propinándoles un buen regaño. Con el respeto que me merecen: es obvio para todos que el crimen es malo, la pobreza es atroz y el HIV mata. Pero estamos un poco aburridos de que nos llenen la cabeza de lugares comunes.
La buena noticia es que a pesar de que le ha tomado diez años, el teatro de protesta está en un nuevo proceso de evolución. En “Luz verde”, Van Graan como escritor y Stopford como director se ponen de acuerdo para infundir en su obra el tipo de sutileza que un país como el nuestro, en una época tan compleja, debería exigir de su teatro. Ya era hora.
Un amigo mío se ofendió mucho en mi nombre cuando etiquetaron mi obra de “teatro de protesta”. En la crítica y en la respuesta de mi amigo, se encuentran muchas de las preguntas pertinentes a este género.
"El teatro de protesta” no es exclusivo de Sudáfrica. La investigación que realicé para mi tesis de honor en esta misma institución, hace aproximadamente veinte años, así como la búsqueda reciente en Internet revelan que el “teatro de protesta” es un género que se manifiesta en situaciones de conflicto político y opresión social, y que no tiene ningún pudor en que lo denominen de esa forma. Así ha ocurrido en diversas manifestaciones escénicas: en el grupo minoritario sudasiático de Toronto que articula su protesta contra el racismo y la violencia de género con el teatro folklórico de la India; en el teatro vietnamita antibélico; en la obra de Luiz Valdez de El Teatro Campesino que protesta contra el trato que se les daba a los cosechadores de frutas en California en los sesenta; en el contenido teatral de los movimientos contemporáneo en contra de la guerra en los Estados Unidos y en Zimbabwe donde, al igual que en nuestro propio apartheid, el teatro de protesta ha comenzado a llenar los vacíos producidos por las prohibiciones y la censura de los diarios, y ha causado que se veten obras y se vigile a los teatristas.
Para muchos en Sudáfrica —con certeza antes de 1994— era un honor ser etiquetados de teatro de protesta. Al fin de cuentas, era lo que se requería contra el orden perverso: ¡Protesten! Hasta que comenzaron a darse cuenta de que el sistema teatral instaurado por el apartheid —abrumadoramente blanco y privilegiado— tenía a lo sumo una actitud ambigua hacia el "teatro de protesta".
¿A qué se debía esta ambigüedad?

En su comentario sobre la reposición de “You Strike the Women, You Strike the Rock” en el State Theatre, Dianne de Beer del Pretoria News comentó: “es un punto de inflexión en el teatro de protesta: doloroso pero edificante para el alma”. En los setenta y ochenta, para la mayoría del público blanco y liberal ir al Space, al Market o al Baxter era como ir a la iglesia. El teatro de protesta significaba una especie de confesión de los pecados colectivos de los protegidos por el apartheid, y a pesar de que era doloroso de mirar, en esencia los actores representaban rituales para alivianar los corazones de la audiencia. Al salir del teatro se sentían purificados: los habían escupido de lejos, y si se habían sentado en las primeras filas los habían escupido en la cara. ¡Aleluya! ¡Aleluya! Vayan y no pequen más. Últimamente escuchamos con frecuencia que el público - todavía abrumadoramente blanco y de clase media – ya no quiere que se le recuerde el pasado. Hasta me han aconsejado que tal vez sería mejor, para el público blanco, bajar el tono del texto del personaje negro Vusi en mi propia obra “Some Mothers´ Son”, cuando él narra sus experiencias a manos de la brutalidad del apartheid. No importa si dichas experiencias son cruciales para el camino que toma el personaje. Ya nos ocupamos de la culpa. Ahora hay que seguir adelante ¡maldita sea!
Durante una reciente representación de “Sizwe Banzi is Dead” no pude menos que sonreír con las exclamaciones de vergüenza del público a medida que los personajes se enfrentaban a algunas de las contradicciones del régimen. Lo que alguna vez fue teatro de protesta es ahora teatro de la nostalgia: es funcional como lección de historia y como recordatorio sutil de lo que solía ser la realidad, pero carece del filo que la inmediatez del apartheid hubiera provocado.

Esto me lleva al segundo punto de la ambigüedad. Si bien es algo que nunca se ha expresado con todas las letras, existe la creencia de que el “teatro de protesta” es inferior. Es un género que no pasaría las pruebas de calidad de la universalidad y la atemporalidad. En su mejor versión, el “teatro de protesta” —o aquel clasificado así por los críticos blancos, académicos, profesionales y comentaristas de la época— fue comprendido y considerado necesario para su época, pero infinitamente limitado. Porque aunque tal vez tuviera cierta validez política, también nos daba un poco de vergüenza, cual pariente rústico del interior, o como un ataque al sentido estético establecido en la práctica de la dramaturgia.
Es verdad que, en general, el teatro en contra del apartheid carecía de experiencia teatral, especialmente aquel que se creó sin la influencia de profesionales blancos, como Barney Simon. Pero esto no es ninguna sorpresa si consideramos que durante el régimen los negros no tenían acceso a estudiar artes, que las oportunidades para los actores negros eran muy limitadas y que las instituciones de estudios terciarios con departamentos de teatro eran prácticamente inaccesibles. Al ser yo coloured (mestizo), tuve que solicitar permiso para ingresar a UCT, una universidad blanca. Para conseguir que me aceptara el Department of Coloured Affairs, yo debía cursar una asignatura que no se impartía en la “University for Wasted Colours”, o sea en la UWC (University of Western Cape). En mi caso, esa materia era teatro y tenía que convertirse en mi especialidad . De modo que gracias al apartheid, continúo siendo un artista que lucha, en lugar de ser un contador en una empresa BEE (Black Economic Empowerment).
El teatro de protesta, “la hermana fea”, tenía alguna de las siguientes características:
a.
Las obras eran didácticas, con poco espacio para interpretaciones. Lo más importante era el mensaje; el teatro era solo un vehículo.
b.
En términos formales era como contar un cuento; los actores se dirigían al público como si estuvieran declamando.
c.
Los actores desempeñaban diversos roles en el proceso de contar el cuento.
d.
A causa de la escasez de recursos no había grandes escenografías, y la utilería y el vestuario eran sencillos y fáciles de transportar.
e.
Los actores tenían poca experiencia. Su talento innato combinado con la cercanía de sus propias realidades a las obras en cuestión, daban credibilidad a las representaciones.
f.
En general, los personajes estaban más cerca de ser caricaturas que de personajes complejos, con múltiples capas.
g.
Numerosas obras del teatro de protesta combinan las disciplinas de
la música, la danza y el teatro
h.
Cuando una obra se representaba en un centro comunitario donde el público se identificaba con la temática, era muy bien recibida. La recepción era distinta si la misma obra se representaba en un teatro formal.
i.
Las obras se trabajaban en equipo y las decisiones se tomaban democráticamente. No existía la figura del escritor como único dueño del proyecto.
Si bien el teatro local no tiene un muy buen concepto del “teatro de protesta” por considerarlo más político que teatral, la realidad es que nuestro género de protesta no es diferente de su homónimo en Vietnam, en los barrios de Sudamérica, en el de los recolectores españoles de California o incluso en el de los educados activistas en contra de la guerra de EEUU. Los temas del “teatro de protesta” tal vez no tuvieron una buena recepción en las clases altas de Ciudad del Cabo, Johannesburgo y Durban, pero con seguridad impactaron en la gente que lucha contra la injusticia y la opresión en otras partes de Africa, Medio Oriente, Asia y Sudamérica.
A su vez, las obras de Neil Simon, Robert Bolt y Sam Sheppard podrán ser consideradas universales por la clase media de Londres, Ciudad del Cabo y Nueva York, pero no generarían empatía en las clases bajas de la India, la República Democrática del Congo o Brasil.
Lo importante es que las nociones de universalidad y atemporalidad no son absolutas. Tienen que ver con la pertenencia de clase, que está íntimamente vinculada a la experiencia de vida, riqueza, educación, exposición a las artes o, por el contrario, a la falta de todo lo anterior. De ser ciertos estos conceptos, el desprecio o las actitudes ambiguas hacia el teatro de protesta por parte de las instituciones teatrales de nuestro país son el reflejo de los prejuicios de las clases dominantes.
Si tenemos en cuenta la naturaleza y el impacto del apartheid, y que las artes, en especial el teatro, son productos de las condiciones imperantes, era inevitable que hubiera un aumento del teatro de protesta. Así como también era inevitable que a consecuencia de la educación regida por el apartheid, dicho género no tuviera la sofisticación escénica del teatro de las clases altas.
Un tema a dilucidar es si todo el teatro cuya ideología está en contra del apartheid puede ser considerado “teatro de protesta”. O únicamente el teatro hecho principalmente por gente negra. O si todo el teatro con temas políticos en contra del status quo es necesariamente de protesta. Según un comentario de Internet, Mary Benson se negó a encasillar de esa manera a las obras de (Barney) Simon y Fugard. ¿Por qué el teatro de ellos no era de protesta? ¿Cuál era la crítica implícita del "teatro de protesta"? Benson cita a Barney de la siguiente manera "... él dijo que
deberíamos entrar en la vida de las personas, sus almas, sus formas de vida, y si surgen aspectos de sus propias luchas entonces todo está bien. Pero es bueno si se puede ir más allá de la protesta contra los horrores e inspirar a la gente para que funcione de manera constructiva”. Parecería que el desarrollo de personajes en situaciones contrarias al apartheid no es teatro de protesta. Y si la obra va más allá de la denuncia del horror e “inspira a que la gente funcione de manera constructiva ya no es “teatro de protesta”. Además, les parece mejor que los temas sean representados por personajes complejos y no a través de monólogos de actores que hablan directamente al público. Que sea más sutil, menos frontal ¿hace que el teatro sea más “teatro” en oposición al de protesta?

El tercer factor importante en el desarrollo del "teatro de protesta" fue la intervención de la comunidad internacional. Además de los donantes internacionales, que proveyeron los recursos para la existencia de este género de lucha contra el régimen, las grandes capitales de Europa Occidental y América del Norte dieron la bienvenida a las obras en el momento justo en que las sanciones internacionales y campañas de desinversión estaban en su apogeo.
A pesar de la ambigüedad del público local: —"es doloroso, pero
bueno para el alma"— y el teatro del régimen: —no es
universal, atemporal ni buen teatro—, irónicamente el público internacional recibió el teatro en contra del apartheid con entusiasmo. Tal vez fue el odio contra el régimen lo que originó el romance con este tipo de teatro. Tal vez fue el compromiso con la causa moral de Mandela y los sudafricanos negros lo que los hizo patrocinar esas representaciones. O tal vez fue la genuina aceptación de la combinación de forma y contenido que era tan diferente de lo que conocían. Cualquiera haya sido la razón, la comunidad internacional apoyó significativamente la creación de un “teatro de protesta” para exportar y así fue que el Market Theatre y el Fugard se convirtieron en las marcas de las artes escénicas sudafricanas más conocidas a nivel internacional, y continúan siéndolo.
En vista del debate anterior sobre el teatro de protesta en la
era del apartheid, las preguntas que surgen son: ¿quién determina lo que es teatro de protesta? ¿Son sus mismos actores? ¿Sus críticos? ¿Sus dramaturgos? ¿Existe una lista de criterios objetivos para evaluar o etiquetar el género? ¿Qué sentido tiene etiquetar? ¿Es bueno para el teatro? ¿Le ayuda al público? Si tomamos en cuenta la antipatía generalizada hacia el concepto de “teatro de protesta” —de ahí la respuesta de mi amigo a la crítica de “Luz Verde” en This Day — ¿es útil hablar del tema? Tal vez el público salga corriendo. Tal vez los críticos vomiten en una bolsa. De modo que si existen las condiciones para este tipo de teatro, tal vez haya que llamarlo de otra forma, o darle un nuevo significado que lo rehabilite para los espectadores tradicionales, especialmente ahora que tenemos un gobierno negro opuesto al régimen del apartheid y sus protegidos.
No tengo las respuestas, sin embargo, parecería que el teatro político produce reacciones contradictorias e hipócritas que, en ocasiones, reflejan más prejuicios y emociones de clase o políticos que rigor o raciocinio intelectual.
¿Por qué estos cuestionamientos son importantes? No se trata solamente de un ejercicio académico de búsqueda de definición sino más bien de comprender la forma en que debemos reaccionar para que pueda surgir el teatro político de nuestros tiempos. ¿Habrá que servir vino nuevo en vasijas viejas? ¿Sirven las etiquetas del pasado para nuestro presente? ¿Facilitarán o inhibirán ellas el desarrollo del teatro político en el orden actual? La realidad es que son precisamente estas actitudes ambiguas y peyorativas las que han hecho que nuestra escena contemporánea, además de estar alineada incondicionalmente con el status quo, carezca de vida propia.
¿O es que ya no hay motivos para protestar?
Permítanme presentar, brevemente, algunas estadísticas diferentes a las que enumeró el Ministro de Finanzas.
En nuestro país tenemos dos definiciones de desempleo:
a.
Definición limitada: todos aquellos con capacidad económicamente activa que todavía buscan trabajo
b.
Definición extendida: todos aquellos que se encuentran tan desalentados que ya no buscan más.
Según la primera definición, nuestra tasa de desempleo es del 26%. Según la segunda, el 41% de nuestra población económicamente activa no tiene empleo. Este último es un porcentaje mucho más cercano a la realidad. En 1994 teníamos tres millones de desempleados. Hoy en día, son cuatro millones y medio según la definición limitada, pero ocho millones y medio según la extendida. En cuanto a las preocupaciones sobre la discriminación positiva, 87% de los desempleados son hombres y mujeres africanos negros, 7,5% son coloured (mestizos), 2,3% indios y 2,7% blancos.
En el Cabo Occidental, el desempleo es del 24%, es decir, quinientas mil personas, de las cuales 80% son jóvenes entre los veinte y veintiséis años. Esta es la provincia más difícil para los hombres africanos: solo dos de cada cien consiguen trabajo.
De los once millones seiscientas mil personas que tienen puestos de trabajo, más del 60% gana 2500 rands o menos por mes. Del total de siete millones ochocientos mil trabajadores africanos, 72% gana entre 1 y 2500 rands por mes.
Después de Brasil, Sudáfrica tiene el mayor índice de desigualdad. La medición de la pobreza en nuestro país indica que el 45% de nuestros ciudadanos - dieciocho millones de personas - se consideran pobres. En el año 2000, el 50% más pobre de los hogares del país recibió apenas 1,6% de los ingresos totales, menos que cinco años antes cuando la cifra era de 1,9%. Los pobres son cada vez más pobres. En contraposición, el 6% de nuestra población se queda con el 40% de los ingresos totales. Según el Sunday Times, nos jactamos de tener veinte multimillonarios, como mínimo, y ciento treinta personas que valen más de cien millones de rands cada una. En el último año, hemos creado cinco mil nuevos millonarios en dólares, sin embargo, 50% de los hogares de nuestro país se las arreglan con veinte rands por día, es decir, seiscientos rands por mes.
A pesar de los niveles de pobreza, los funcionarios de gobierno, que deberían estar al frente de la cruzada en su contra, son los principales responsables de robar a los más necesitados. Según un informe periodístico realizado a principios de este año, treinta y siete mil empleados públicos están bajo investigación por fraude y corrupción, y esto le cuesta al sistema social del gobierno un millardo y medio de rands por año.
Continuando con el tema de la delincuencia: según las últimas estadísticas presentadas por el gobierno, mueren anualmente diecinueve mil ochocientas personas. Y aunque es el nivel más bajo que hemos tenido desde 1994, aún son cincuenta y tres personas por día. En los países que no están en guerra, solo un colombiano tiene más posibilidades de ser asesinado que un sudafricano. Hay alrededor de cuatro millones y medios de armas de fuego registradas en Sudáfrica y se estima que hay, además, entre quinientos mil y un millón sin registrar.
El año pasado, cincuenta y dos mil setecientas mujeres fueron violadas, es decir, ciento cuarenta y cuatro por día. Estas cifras corresponden a las violaciones denunciadas. El 41% de las víctimas eran niños; el 15% del total de denuncias de violación corresponden a niños menores de once años, y el 2% a los que tienen de 12 a 17 años. Cincuenta y ocho niños fueron violados por día.
Como si esto no fuera suficiente, acá van las estadísticas del SIDA. En 2004, se estimaba que trescientos once mil personas habían muerto ese mismo año de esa enfermedad, y que esa cifra correspondía al 44% de todas las muertes de ese año en Sudáfrica. Es decir, más de ochocientos cincuenta por día. Se estima que el 70% de las muertes ocurridas entre los 15-49 años de edad pueden atribuirse al SIDA. Un informe indica que una persona asiste a un funeral dos veces por mes; en consecuencia cada individuo conoce, como mínimo, a veinticuatro personas que morirán de SIDA cada año.
Ahora bien, si consideramos que en estas estadísticas de proporciones genocidas hay una historia humana detrás de cada muerte, cabe preguntarse a los gritos “¿POR QUÉ NO HAY MÁS TEATRO DE PROTESTA?”. Y no únicamente de protesta sino también un teatro que exprese la INDIGNACIÓN producida por los ataques diarios a los derechos humanos fundamentales y a las libertades de las mayorías. ¿Por qué? ¿Por qué?
¿Por qué nos sentimos presionados por el “teatro de protesta”?
¿Será que no es lo que la clase media actual, primordialmente blanca, quiere? ¿Será que tenemos miedo de perder el acceso a la financiación que otorgan los encargados de la libertad de expresión artística del Consejo Nacional de las Artes y la Lotería? ¿Será que nos preocupa que las actuales administraciones de teatros y festivales —las que dependen del subsidio estatal— rechacen nuestras obras? ¿Será que nos sentimos culpables de haber sido protegidos del régimen del apartheid y que ahora no tenemos derecho a ser críticos? ¿O tal vez que no queremos ser etiquetados de racistas, de compañeros de la Alianza Democrática o de vendepatrias traidores a la revolución? ¿O nos preocupa que la comunidad internacional, políticamente correcta, no nos acepte obras críticas de la nación milagrosa? ¿O será que tenemos amigos, parientes y compañeros en el gobierno?
Después de cada una de las funciones de “Luz verde”, me ocupé de que hubiera libretas, como en los museos y galerías de arte, para que el público pudiera dejar sus comentarios. Uno de los adjetivos recurrentes era “valiente”, que se trataba de una obra “valiente”. También Maishe Maponya, que en los setenta y ochenta era un arriesgado dramaturgo, hizo el mismo comentario.
Me desconcierta que los comentarios estén dirigidos a la sociedad más que a la obra en sí. Lo que hoy sucede en Zimbabwe era lo mismo que pasaba en Sudáfrica durante el apartheid: había que ser realmente valiente para hacer teatro. Uno se exponía a la censura y a la prohibición. Te podían arrestar. Te podían detener. A mí me arrestaron por hacer teatro callejero en Claremont Main Road. Era una obra en contra de la explotación de inmigrantes y nos dijeron que nos estábamos manifestando ilegalmente. Sabíamos que podían arrestarnos, pero lo hicimos de todos modos. Habíamos planeado presentarnos en el Festival del Pueblo, pero a finales de 1985 durante el estado de emergencia lo cancelaron dos días antes con el pretexto de que representaba una amenaza a la seguridad de la nación. Nosotros nos reuníamos en la kombi de uno de los miembros del comité, pero eso no impidió que a algunos los encerraran sin juicio de por medio.
Y ahora que tenemos una Constitución que nos garantiza el derecho a la libertad de expresión creativa y más de diez años de democracia , consideramos valiente a un dramaturgo que escribe una obra como “Luz verde”. ¿Qué dice eso de nuestra sociedad? ¿Y de la sensibilidad del gobierno a la crítica? ¿Qué dice de nuestra sociedad enferma de autocensura? ¿Y de nuestra democracia? ¿Y de nuestra industria teatral? ¿ Y de nosotros como escritores y teatristas?
El teatro, como todas las artes, la educación, los medios y otras instituciones de socialización, habita en el reino del conflicto hegemónico, en la batalla por proporcionar un liderazgo que respete las ideas, los valores, las formas de ver el mundo y los supuestos ideológicos para comunicar el desarrollo de nuestra sociedad y nuestras propias vidas individuales. Nos guste o no,
lo admitamos o no, el acto de hacer teatro es en esencia un
acto político. Lo que incluimos o dejamos de lado, para quiénes y en qué teatros, son también, esencialmente, opciones políticas estratégicas. Aunque tomáramos la decisión de hacer teatro apolítico, el tema, el lugar y nuestro público objetivo siempre reforzarán o cuestionarán los valores dominantes y las creencias.
Uno de los pocos teatristas que se ha mantenido fiel a sus convicciones es Pieter-Dirk Uys. Él apuntó sus dardos críticos contra el actual gobierno así como lo hizo contra el gobierno anterior. Y no solo es un ciudadano activo, también es un hombre de teatro que escribe cartas a los periódicos. Ayer, por ejemplo, reclamó por la censura inminente de los medios de comunicación. Su obra continúa siendo tan popular como lo fue en tiempos del apartheid, y nunca abandonó los temas políticos.
¿Es él un profesional del teatro de protesta? ¿Es “Luz Verde” una obra de protesta que ha evolucionado? Yo, francamente, no lo sé ni me importa. Cuando la escribí no tenía intenciones de que perteneciera a este género; yo solo quería una obra que llegara al público sudafricano contemporáneo, que los hiciera pensar y, quizás, sentir.
Durante el debate posterior a la lectura de “Luz Verde”, en el marco del Festival de Teatro de la escuela de la nueva dramaturgia de la Universidad del Cabo y PANSA (Red de artes escénicas de Sudáfrica), recuerdo que alguien comentó que era una buena obra, pero que al público no le interesaría. Que a la gente ya no le importaba el teatro político. La realidad es que durante el Festival de las Artes Fringe, al año siguiente, hubo gente que no logró entrar. Y en el Baxter, el año pasado, la venta de entradas colmó las tres cuartas partes de la sala.
Me pregunto si nosotros, como representantes de la comunidad teatral, no seremos responsables de las profecías autocumplidas. No es que no tenemos nada de qué escribir. Tampoco que el público no quiere teatro político. Quizás es que, a diferencia de Pieter Dirk Uys, no tenemos las agallas para meternos en temas actuales y nos hemos convertido en parte de los problemas de la mayoría de los habitantes de este país. Estamos de acuerdo con el status quo, buscamos la riqueza personal en desmedro de nuestros compatriotas y somos indiferentes al sufrimiento y a la pobreza. En el proceso, debilitamos el rol catártico que el teatro debe desempeñar en una sociedad en transición y tan traumatizada como la nuestra. Al no comprometernos a defender nuestras libertades constitucionales, a través de nuestro trabajo y acciones ciudadanas, ponemos en peligro la democracia. Y así permitimos que otros construyan un sistema democrático para su propio beneficio.
Por el bien de nuestra democracia, por el bien de la mayoría de los
habitantes de nuestro país, por el bien de la sociedad en que vivimos, por el bien de la sociedad que heredarán nuestros hijos, es imperativo que, sin importar el nombre, defendamos el surgimiento de un teatro valiente que sin dudas ni pudor diga la verdad a los poderes fácticos.
Me gustaría terminar con un poema incluido en “Mixed Metaphors”, que es mi mantra personal como artista y dramaturgo.

Brief history
Cattrachas is a lesbian feminist organisation dedicated to research, advocacy and the defence of the LGBT (lesbian, gay bi-sexual and transgender) community in general and lesbians in particular. Even in the midst of political repression in Honduras (since the coup in 2009), it has maintained a systematic monitoring process and carries out advocacy to defend and take forward the recognition of the rights of the LGBT community at different levels.
Its main achievement in 2010 was to keep the national and international community informed through the internet of violations of the rights of its community. It permanently monitors the media and makes films during public demonstrations providing evidence both of repression and religious fundamentalism, and also of the participation of all identities of women and the LGBT Community. It has broadcasted over 100 videos on the internet.
Cattrachas presented evidence during the trial of the police for the attempted murder of a transgender person and provided support and protection to the victim and witnesses. It carries out advocacy initiatives with the government and also exposes systematic violations of the rights of members of the LGBT community.
Work on Violence against Women (VAW)
Cattrachas uses an intersectional approach in that it works to defend the human rights and sexual and reproductive rights of the lesbian, gay and transgender community. Its key activity is advocacy and it is a member of a national alliance of organisations in Honduras that form the National Observatory on Violence with a focus on femicides.
Prevention
Cattrachas works to prevent violence against the LGTB community through
monitoring the media to identify members of the community who have been murdered, massacres of women and girls, and femicides, and to carry out research based on hard data.
It seeks to ensure that impunity for crimes against women, lesbian women, and transgender people is diminished through campaigning.
Protection
Cattrachas defends the human rights of the LGTB community with the goal of contributing to building a State with equality of rights for all citizens.
It monitors the media and compares data with those from the Public Prosecutions Department (which compiles information on crimes against women), and provides the technical tools to support research and judicial processes.
Promotion
At a national level Cattrachas has promoted public and political recognition of the lesbian writer Amanda Castro by printing her poetry collection Naked and Relentless (Desnuda y Sin Tregua). It has integrated the lesbian-feminist movement into the National Front of Popular Resistance; and it is part of the technical alliance with the National Observatory on Violence to permanently monitor violence against the LGBT community.
It carries out advocacy on a national level, publicly denouncing the violation of human rights of the LGTB community, calling for public policies and an end to impunity for the perpetrators. It presents evidence and demands that the Honduran State investigates and appoints special Public Prosecutors to resolve the murder cases of transgender people.
Cattrachas also operates at an international level to advocate within the UN system, presenting reports to the UN Special Rapporteurs and by submitting shadow and alternative reports to the relevant committees on the basis of the International Conventions that the Honduras State has signed up to.
Lessons, obstacles, challenges and strengths
Before the 2009 coup there was an inter-institutional commission on femicides where Cattrachas participated in discussions on how to put an end to the killings and find solutions to address the impunity of the aggressors. However, this fora no longer operates. Consequently Cattrachas presents its evidence to public officials working in departments for women and girls. It also works with Human Rights defenders analysing information on issues relating to torture.
Cattrachas succeeded in getting the Ministry for Security to assign a special research team to the murder of transgender people and the Minister for Justice and Human Rights made a declaration in the media demanding actions to investigate such crimes. Cattrachas also put forward proposals to modify Article 321 of the Penal Code, which penalises discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. These include the appointment of a prosecutor to deal with violations of the rights of the LGBT community.
Their monitoring work, especially with the media, to gather evidence of human rights violations of women, girls and the LGBT community has enabled Cattrachas to carry out advocacy at an international level which in turn has had encouraged the government of Honduras to review its policies.

Su logro principal, en 2010, ha sido el mantener informada a la comunidad nacional e internacional a través de internet, de la violación de sus derechos. Cattrachas, de manera permanente, vigila los medios y realiza películas durante demostraciones públicas, proporcionando evidencia tanto de la represión como del fundamentalismo religioso; así como de la participación de mujeres de todas las identidades y de la comunidad LGBT. Cattrachas ha difundido más de 100 vídeos por internet.
Cattrachas ha presentado evidencias durante el juicio de la policía por el intento de asesinato de una persona transexual y ha proporcionado apoyo y protección a la víctima y a los testigos. Asimismo, lleva a cabo iniciativas de promoción con el gobierno y expone las violaciones sistemáticas de los derechos de los miembros de la comunidad LGBT.
Trabajo en la violencia contra la mujer (VCM)
Cattrachas utiliza un enfoque interseccional ya que trabaja para defender los derechos humanos, sexuales y reproductivos de la comunidad lesbiana, gay y transexual. Su actividad clave es la promoción y es miembro de la Alianza Nacional de organizaciones en Honduras que componen el Observatorio Nacional en Violencia enfocado en femicidios.
Prevención
Cattrachas trabaja para prevenir la violencia contra la comunidad LGBT a través del control de los
medios para identificar tanto a los miembros de la comunidad que hayan sido asesinados, como a las masacres de mujeres y niñas y femicidios, y para realizar investigaciones basadas en datos objetivos.
Busca asegurar que la impunidad por delitos contra mujeres, lesbianas y transexuales disminuya a través de campañas.
Protección
Cattrachas defiende los derechos humanos de la comunidad LGTB con el objetivo de contribuir a la construcción de un estado con igualdad de derechos para todos los ciudadanos.
Monitorea a los medios y compara los datos con los que provienen de la Fiscalía (que recopila información de delitos contra las mujeres), y proporciona instrumentos técnicos para apoyo de los procesos de investigación y judiciales.
Promoción
A nivel nacional, Cattrachas ha promovido el reconocimiento público y político de la escritora lesbiana Amanda Castro, mediante la impresión de su colección de poemas “Desnuda y Sin Tregua”. Cattrachas, además, opera a nivel internacional para abogar por la justicia social dentro del sistema de las Naciones Unidas, presentando informes a los Relatores Especiales de las Naciones Unidas y enviando informes paralelos y alternativos a los comités relevantes, en virtud de las convenciones internacionales a las que el gobierno de Honduras se ha suscrito.
Lecciones, obstáculos, retos y fortalezas
Previo al golpe de 2009, existía una comisión interinstitucional contra el femicidio en la que Cattrachas participaba en debates para poner fin a los asesinatos y encontrar soluciones para abordar la impunidad de los agresores. Sin embargo, y dado que estos foros ya no existen, Cattrachas presenta sus evidencias, en consecuencia, a funcionarios públicos que se desempeñan en dependencias para mujeres y niñas. También trabaja con defensores de Derechos Humanos en el análisis de la información relacionada con torturas.
Cattrachas consiguió que el Ministerio de Seguridad asignara un equipo especial de investigación de asesinatos de transexuales y el Ministerio de Justicia y Derechos Humanos publicó una comunicación exigiendo que se investigaran dichos crímenes. Cattrachas, además, llevó adelante propuestas para modificar el artículo 321 del Código Penal, que penaliza la discriminación en términos de orientación sexual e identidad de género. Dichas propuestas incluyen la asignación de un fiscal que se ocupe de las violaciones a los derechos de la comunidad LGBT.
El trabajo de seguimiento, en especial el realizado en los medios, para conseguir evidencia de violaciones a los derechos de mujeres, niñas y la comunidad LGBT, ha permitido que Cattrachas lleve adelante la promoción de la justicia social a niveles internacionales, lo que a su vez ha fomentado que el gobierno de Honduras revise sus políticas al respecto.
