Las frutas son una valiosa fuente de energía, vitaminas y placer. Su presencia es sinónimo de vida y alegría. También, de salud. Entre ellas, los cítricos se destacan, especialmente el limón, que es uno de los frutos que nos ofrecen mayores beneficios para la salud de toda la familia. Su poder curativo reside en poseer un bajo contenido energético, un nivel equilibrado en sodio y potasio y lo que todos conocen, por su riqueza en vitamina C.
Ya que el limón posee un número tan escaso de hidratos de carbono, es de gran ayuda en las dietas de adelgazamiento. Comer limón representa incorporar vitamina C sin calorías adicionales. Posee vitamina C en abundancia que refuerza las defensas del organismo para evitar enfermedades, sobre todo de las vías respiratorias que van desde un simple catarro, ronquera, amigdalitis, hasta pulmonías, bronquitis, congestiones, gripe, pleuresías, asma, etc.
La vitamina C o ácido ascórbico tiene un gran poder desinfectante y posee además una acción antitóxica frente a los venenos microbianos y medicamentosos. Junto a la vitamina C se encuentra la vitamina P que ayuda a tonificar los capilares y vasos sanguíneos.
Esta es llamada también vitamina de la permeabilidad capilar: sin ella los capilares sanguíneos se vuelven frágiles y pueden romperse con facilidad, provocando pequeñas hemorragias.

El limón es muy rico en minerales entre los que se destacan potasio, magnesio, calcio y fósforo (contiene también sodio, hierro y flúor).

Cuenta con algunas vitaminas del complejo B (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, PP).
La vitamina B1 (tiamina) previene y cura la enfermedad del beriberi cuyos síntomas son parálisis, edema e insuficiencia cardíaca. Interviene además en el metabolismo de los hidratos de carbono.
La vitamina PP (niacina) previene contra la piel áspera, pelagra. Enfermedad que se manifiesta por la inflamación de la piel, mala digestión y alteraciones mentales. Esta vitamina es muy necesaria para conservar la salud de la piel, el aparato digestivo y el sistema nervioso.
Es un fruto que podríamos definir como medicinal por excelencia ya que actúa como curativo en más de 150 enfermedades.
En cualquier parte del organismo donde se encuentren las toxinas, ya sea en la sangre, en los órganos, en los tejidos, el limón una vez ingerido acude para combatirlas disolviendo sus acumulaciones y expulsarlas.
En casos de intoxicación gastrointestinal por consumir alimentos en mal estado o combinar mal los alimentos o digestiones pesadas y malestares del hígado y vesícula, el limón actúa normalizando las funciones alteradas, neutralizando las toxinas y ayudando en su eliminación.

En los casos de fiebre ayuda a eliminarla, oxidando y excretando los tóxicos que no han sido debidamente neutralizados y eliminados. A excepción de la fiebre reumática.

Está contraindicado en casos de desmineralización, descalcificación, anemia, raquitismo, fragilidad de los huesos, inflamación de las encías, dientes flojos y muy cariados, llagas en la boca y garganta, grietas en la lengua, heridas en la piel, edad avanzada o niños débiles, insomnio, acidosis, sensibilidad a los ácidos, estreñimiento crónico, inflamación de la próstata, inflamación de la matriz, vejiga o esófago. Mientras dura el período menstrual, enfermedades de los nervios.
Dentro de los cítricos, hay varias frutas que tienen características parecidas al limón, como el pomelo, la lima y la toronja.
La cantidad a consumir depende de cada persona y de su constitución orgánica. Por ejemplo las personas de constitución fuerte lo toleran más que los ancianos y los niños. Los obesos más que los delgados y cae en verano que en invierno, porque el frío retarda su eliminación a través de la piel).

The amount to take depends on each person and their biological constitution. For example, people with a strong constitution can tolerate more than the elderly and children, people who are obese more than slim people, and is taken better in summer than in winter as the cold slows its elimination through the skin.
Depending on these factors, anything from small amounts of juice to half a lemon may be taken and those who are able to tolerate it may take the juice of up to three lemons daily.
