Φαίνεται ότι η ατομική θεωρία ήταν το αποτέλεσμα μιας προσπάθειας υπέρβασης του ελεατικού μονισμού, όπως αυτός διαμορφώθηκε από τον Παρμενίδη και τους διαδόχους του με την άρνηση της μαρτυρίας των αισθήσεων και του κόσμου των φαινομένων.
Οι ατομικοί, αντίθετα από τους Ελεάτες, προσπάθησαν να μην αναιρέσουν τη γένεση, τη φθορά, την κίνηση και το πλήθος των όντων, ώστε να παραμείνουν σε συμφωνία με τα δεδομένα που παρέχουν στον άνθρωπο οι αισθήσεις του. Βέβαια θα τονίσουν ότι δεν πρέπει κανείς να έχει τυφλή εμπιστοσύνη σ΄ αυτά τα δεδομένα, αλλά να τα επεξεργάζεται με τη βοήθεια της κριτικής ικανότητας του ανθρώπινου νου. Από την άλλη ήταν πολύ δύσκολο να παραβλέψουν την παρμενίδεια θέση για τα χαρακτηριστικά του Ενός. Απλώς, κατά μεγαλοφυή τρόπο απέδωσαν τις ιδιότητες του μοναχικού παρμενίδειου όντος σε κάθε ένα από τα πολλά όντα που αποτελούν τη βάση της δικής τους κοσμοθεωρίας, τα άτομα. Αυτά είναι αιώνια, αναλλοίωτα, δεν υπόκεινται σε γέννηση σε φθορά και με τις ενώσεις και τους διαχωρισμούς τους δημιουργούν τα πράγματα που υπόκεινται σε μεταβολές.
Translation - English The theory of the atomic philosophers
It seems the theory of the atomic philosophers was the result of an attempt to surpass the Eleatic monism, as it was formed by Parmenides and his successors by denying the evidence of the senses and the world of phenomena.
The atomic philosophers, in contrast to the Eleatics, tried not to deny the concepts of birth, decay, movement and the plurality of beings, so as to remain in agreement with the information given to humans by the senses. Still, they emphasized that no one should have a blind trust on this information but should study them with the critical abilities of the human mind.
On the other hand, it was very difficult to disregard Parmenides position on the characteristics of the One.
In an ingenious way, they simply attributed the qualities of the solitary Parmenidian being to each of the many beings that constitute the basis of their worldview, the atoms. These are eternal, unalterable, not subject to birth and decay and with their union and separation create the objects that are subject to change.
