m2g4kysbv4fditjfzpno.pngHi there,

thanks for stopping by! My name is Tom, and I am a former naval officer gone freelance linguist. I graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in the mid-90s, having earned a BSc in political science with a concentration of studies in international relations. Commissioned as a naval officer with a special duty/intelligence designator, I received formal linguistic training in German and eventually earned an associate of arts degree in German at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California.

Fond of making my own decisions, but not so fond of sea deployments, I decided to leave the service after serving out my five-year commitment to pursue a career as a linguist in the private sector. After I made a successful start into my freelance career, it became more and more apparent that medical translation is where I am at home. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to hone my skills for a number of years, providing medical translation and review to a large government contractor dealing with overseas CHAMPUS/TRICARE claims processing. Millions of translated and proofread words of biopsy-, radiological-, and general-treatment reports later, I feel right at home between bone marrow smears with a Prussian-blue stain and fluorine-18-FDG-enhanced PET scans.

So what is it that I have to offer to you?

My clients consistently praise my expertise in the medical and contract/law fields. I am not an “I can do it all” translator. I stick to what I know, and when I feel that a job is better served by another translator with a more suitable background, I am not afraid to let my clients know.

I strongly believe in open and honest business relationships. Translators and project managers should make each other’s lives easier, not harder. I can be reached 24/7 and consistently provide updates on your project’s status. If a problem arises, you will learn of it immediately, not 20 minutes before the deadline is up.

I am neither the cheapest nor the fastest translator, but I do deliver a product that minimizes post-processing time and expenses. After more than 10 years of working in this specific field and applying an approach to quality assurance inspired by my military experience, I am confident that my translations require very little to no editing at all.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. I will gladly provide references or prepare a 200- to 300-word translation sample to your specifications.

CV available upon request.

And finally, a word about rates and discounts. I have had the opportunity to work as a project manager in this industry for several years, so I am well aware of the market pressure and client demands one may face. I am always willing to discuss rates for very large volumes of work or very repetitive work. However, if your business model heavily relies on massive discounts for fuzzy matches of less than 85%, or if amounts in the 3¢ to 4¢ USD range are a staple of your rate structure, then, more than likely, we won't be compatible.

I will also have to decline job offers that consist of “proofing” documents that were produced at the “farms” in certain very-low-cost countries by nonnative speakers. Unfortunately, these jobs tend to be very tedious and more time-consuming than translation from scratch and, as such, are not really economically viable.
