Il termine barbaro, fatto discendere dal latino barbarus, quindi dal greco bárbaros, utilizzato per indicare gli stranieri, gli oltre confine, e in particolare frigi, parti, persiani, avrebbe in realtà un’origine più antica. Bisognerebbe risalire al sanscrito bar bar, voce onomatopeica, raglio, cigolio del linguaggio, disastro sintattico,
ascritta con biasimo a “coloro che balbettano”, che “si esprimono come cani”, che “non si fanno capire”, di conseguenza a chi, in un tempo lontano, non aveva ancora varcato i confini della Storia.
Duemilacinquecento anni dopo. Riflettete sul fatto. Un’altra parola fonosimbolica, un suono rapido, pulito, si pone parimenti ai margini della civiltà. Una parola che pure sta a indicare un balbettio, un farfuglio, un contrattempo della lingua. Solo che, questa volta, non si tratta di esitare davanti al monumento del progresso.
Ma digerirlo con il minimo sforzo. Evacuarlo. Tra flatulenze divine. Sospiri di sollievo. Alleggerirsi. Il nuotatore che, dopo un lunghissimo inabissamento, riemerge dall’altro capo della vasca. Questa parola è Dada.
Difficile stabilire se il contenuto delle prossime pagine risuoni da da più che bar bar o, verosimilmente, si muova alla deriva di entrambe le poetiche. La cosa certa è che l’Autore, il 13 agosto 1998, dopo la quotidiana assunzione di codeina, mescalina, nembutal e psilocybe, si incapricciò del vecchio, vecchissimo gioco del “sacchetto di carta”. Predispose ogni cosa con qualche variante. Diede inizio a quanto segue.
Prendete: 1) un sacchetto di carta, 2) un paio di forbici, 3) un fazzoletto, 4) un’edizione qualsiasi della Garzantina di Letteratura. Riducetevi in uno stato di inoffensiva ebrietà. Strappate a caso dalla Garzantina un centinaio di pagine. Ritagliate dalle suddette pagine le voci composte in neretto. Mettetele nel sacchetto di carta.
Prendete il fazzoletto. Bendatevi. Effettuate con gesto ispirato una estrazione. Prima di effettuare l’estrazione ripensate con cinica voluttà al sacco di Roma del 410 a.C. Bar bar. Toglietevi la benda. Avrete tra le mani: un premio Nobel, un movimento letterario, il titolo di un romanzo, una voce di metrica, il nome di un autore.
Un nome che, del tutto casualmente, risponde a quello di un pessimo modello per le generazioni che verranno.

Between divine flatulences. Sighs of relief. A lightening. The swimmer who, after a long dive underwater, emerges from the other side of the tank. This word is Dada.
It is difficult to determine whether the content of the following pages resounds more with da da or bar bar or, more likely, tends to the drift of both poetics. What is certain is that this Author, on August 13, 1998, after daily intake of codeine, mescaline, Nembutal and psilocybin, took a fancy to the age-old game of "paper bag." He prepared everything, with a few variations. He began what follows.
Take: 1) a paper bag, 2) a pair of scissors, 3) a handkerchief, 4) any edition of the Garzanti Encyclopedia of Literature. Reduce yourself to a harmless state of intoxication. Tear about a hundred pages from the Garzanti at random. Cut out the entries in bold. Put them in a paper bag. Take the handkerchief. Blindfold yourself. With an inspired gesture, draw one piece of paper. Before carrying out the drawing, reconsider with cynical delight the sack of Rome in 410 AD. Bar bar. Take off the blindfold. You will have in your hands: a Nobel Prize winner, a literary movement, the title of a novel, a poetic meter, and the name of an author.
A name that, quite by chance, corresponds to that of a very bad role model for the coming generations.

Source text - Italian Stretto tra il fiume Magra e il torrente Verde, protetto dal castello arroccato sul colle del Piagnaro, il borgo di Pontremoli deve la sua straordinaria importanza alla posizione strategica ai piedi dell’Appennino, in un lembo di Toscana tra Liguria ed Emilia, lungo l’antica Via Francigena, “chiave e porta” dei valichi che per tutto il Medioevo garantirono il collegamento più breve e agevole tra l’Europa continentale e quella mediterranea. Ricordato sul finire del X secolo quale tappa nell’itinerario di Sigerico di ritorno dal pellegrinaggio a Roma, Pontremoli fu libero comune fino agli inizi del XIV secolo, prima di passare sotto il dominio di varie signorie interessate al controllo dell’importante via di comunicazione. Città relativamente ricca grazie ai commerci e alle gabelle, è nel 1650, con l’acquisto da parte del Granducato di Toscana, che Pontremoli
conosce uno straordinario sviluppo sociale ed economico che ne fa una realtà fiorente. I commerci con il porto di Livorno, la lavorazione delle merci, la conquista dei mercati del nord, arricchiscono numerose famiglie che costruiscono palazzi e ville e trasformano le antiche e austere chiese secondo il gusto barocco. È stata sede vescovile dal 1787 al 1987.
Napoleone ne fece un centro amministrativo di rilievo, la Restaurazione lo riaffidò prima alla Toscana, poi al Ducato di Parma di Maria Luigia con la Lunigiana parmense. Entrato a far parte della provincia di Massa Carrara con l’Unità d’Italia, Pontremoli ha avuto un ruolo di rilievo nella guerra di Liberazione, tra gli ultimi territori abbandonati dall’esercito tedesco il 27 aprile 1945.
Translation - English Right between the Magra River and Verde Creek, protected by a castle on Piagnaro hill, the village of Pontremoli owes it extraordinary importance to its strategic position at the foot of the Apennines, on a strip of Tuscany between Liguria and Emilia, along the historic Via Francigena. It served as “door and key” to the mountain pass that guaranteed the quickest and easiest link between continental Europe and the Mediterranean throughout the Middle Ages. Recorded at the end of the 10th century as a stopping-point on the Sigerico Itinerary, a pilgrimage route to Rome, Pontremoli was an independent commune until the start of the 14th century, when it fell under the rule of a changing series of lords interested in controlling the important mountain crossing. A relatively rich village thanks to commerce and taxes, it was with the acquisition of a part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1650 that Pontremoli experienced a period of extraordinary social and economic growth, causing it to truly flourish. Through commerce with bordering Liverno, the manufacture of goods, and commercial success in the northern markets, many families grew rich and constructed palaces and villas, as well as remodeling the austere, old churches according to the baroque taste of the period. It was the seat of the Diocese from 1787 to 1987.
Napoleon had an important administrative center at Pontremoli, and during the Restoration it was entrusted first to Tuscany, then to the Duchy of Parma, along with the entire Luginiana territory, under the Duchess Maria Luigia. Pontremoli joined the province of Massa Carrara during the Risorgimento, and played an important role in WWII, being among the last territories to be given up by the German military on April 27, 1945.

Dal 2008 - 2009 abitavo a Arcosanti, l'arcologia prototipo dell'architetto Paolo Soleri. Ho completato 12 crediti verso un master negli Studi della Traduzione presso la University of Massachusetts at Amherst, e ho internato per Open Letter Press alla University of Rochester.
