Source text - Hungarian Hangszerkészítők a középkor óta kísérleteztek olyan billentyűs zeneszerszámokkal, melyeken tetszőleges hosszúságú hangokat lehet játszani. Az aerofonok közül a fújtatós orgonák és regálok, a későbbi pedálos harmóniumok, valamint a tömlővel működő dudák tudtak folyamatos hangon zengeni, míg az idiofon, membranofon vagy kordofon instrumentumokon dörzskerékkel vagy végtelenített vonóval lehetett egyenletesen kitartott hangzást kelteni. Since the late Middle Ages, instrument makers have experimented with keyboard instruments that would allow notes to be held indefinitely as long the player desired. The pump organ and regal, the more recent pedal harmonium, and the bagpipe all could produce uninterrupted sound, while idiophones, membranophones, of chordophones equipped with friction wheels or continuous belts could produce unbroken, sustained sounds. Given that keyboard-equipped friction idiophones had not been particularly successful, tireless inventors who wanted a true voice-like sostenuto hoped that they could more easily achieve it by replacing cold sounding glass, wood, and metal resonators with strings.
One of the first bowed instruments with a keyboard was the medieval organistrum (hurdy-gurdy played by two players). It used a rosined wheel as a bow in combination with tangents. Its various descendents have remained popular to this day.
Leonardo da Vinci planned his Viola Organista, an instrument that produced sound using rosined friction belts, in 1489, but it is unlikely that he ever actually built it. His drawings show a horsehair archetto (bow) that was moved back and forth by a simple geared transmission, but in a later version the belt moved in a loop. The keyboard pushed the instrument’s gut strings onto this continuous belt. It is testament to da Vinci’s genius that an instrument reconstructed based on his original drawings from the Codex Atlanticus worked perfectly.
In about 1600 Hans Hayden, the organist at Nuremberg’s Sebaldskirche, created the Nüremberger Geigenwerk (“Nuremberg fiddle machine”). The strings were played using a set of friction wheels driven by a V-belt transmission. The Geigenwerk’s body had a string for each pitch. When a key was pressed, an L-shaped arm lowered the string so that it was rubbed by the rosined rim of a spinning wheel. The only example to have survived to the present is one built by the Spanish harpsichord maker Raymondo Truchado in 1625 that is currently housed in the Musée des Instruments de Musique, in Brussels.
Among instrumental inventions played using rosined wheels, the Clavecin-vielle (harpsichord hurdy-gurdy), built in Paris in 1708 by Cuisinié, is of note. This six-stringed instrument, equipped with a keyboard arranged like that of a piano, was in actuality a hurdy-gurdy. Cuisinié’s vielle stood on legs and was turned with a pedal rather than a hand crank, allowing the keyboard to be played with both hands.
The German-born harpsichord maker Roger Plenius introduced his fifty-nine-string Lyrichord in 1741. Its friction wheels were turned using a wind-up system much like that of a wall clock with weights suspended from the end of the instrument.
The keys of the Bogenflügel-Klavier pressed its metal strings onto a horsehair belt (rather than a wheel) that rotated on rollers. According to Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus’ account, other instrument makers produced similar Streichklaviers, including Johann Hohlfeld (1754), Johann Carl Greiner (1779), Thomas Anton Kunz (1800), Karl Beddies (1883), and Ludwig (Lajos) Schnöller in Pest (1893).
The biggest difficulty for bowed pianos was setting the appropriate tension on the circular bow. If the bow were too tight, the strings would make a raspy sound, but if it were too slack, then some sounds would be too quiet. The Xänorphica that Carl Leopold Röllig introduced around 1800 was one attempt at addressing this problem. The instrument was strung vertically like a keyed harp and equipped with a treadle-powered wooden wheel. A separate bow was attached to the frame by each string, so the tension of the hair for each bow could be adjusted by moving it back and forth levelly, perpendicular with the frame. In 1793, an instrument made by Karl Andreas von Meyer zu Knonow in Görlitz was equipped with a bow frame that could be adjusted vertically, and, near the end of the 1800s, Emanuel Moór and Felix Schwab experimented with a two-part frame. The most interesting of the keyboard instruments that were able to produce artificially elongated sounds were those that made their sound indirectly. In 1809 Johann Friedrich Kaufmann and Johann Gottfried Kaufmann of Dresden introduced their Harmonichord. When the keys were depressed, they lowered narrow rods toward a rotating cylinder that spanned the width of the instrument’s case. The ends of these rods were notched to allow the intensive vibrations generated by the cylinder to be transmitted continuously to the strings, which rested in these notches. The strings sounded as long as the keys were not released. The Brighton instrument maker Isaac Henry Robert Mott patented his Sostenente-piano in 1817. It worked on similar principles, but instead of rods it used a silk cord between the keys and the strings to transmit the vibration. The term sostenente, which would apply to any instrument capable of producing a sustained tone, was first used by Mott. The Parisian Hubert Cyrille Baudet was one of the few instrument builders who managed to acquire some degree of fame with his inventions, first with the Piano Violon (patented in 1866) and later with the Piano Quatuor that he built in 1873. Uniquely in the history of musical instruments, Baudet’s Piano Quatuor transmitted its sound through braided bundles made from a blend of hemp, wire, and horsehair. These small broom-straw-like bundles were fastened to a string equidistant from each other. When the keys were pressed small pads made from a rubbery material pressed against the rosined cylinder. The intensity of the friction was controlled not only by the pedal-driven cylinder, but also by moving a geared transmission to the right or the left. In contrast to the countless other instruments that vanished in obscurity, a number of museums and collections have preserved original Piano Quatuors.
