Source text - English In recent years Judith Weir’s music has begun at last to receive the acclaim it has always deserved: commissions from the great orchestras and opera houses of Europe and America, prestigious academic appointments and prizes, including in 2007 the coveted Queen’s Medal for Music. One might almost imagine all this worldly success to betoken an artist at ease with the compromises and conventionalities demanded by the public institutions of art; yet Weir’s music, though marvellously and genuinely accessible, is very far from conventional – rather, its beauty goes hand in hand with a quietly firm insistence on its own strangeness, apartness and individuality. Her work has always been concerned with compositional exploration of boldest kind, whose every new move is a keenly-anticipated surprise and delight.
In a recent interview, Weir revealed that it was King Harald’s Saga (1979) in which she first felt herself to have found her voice; certainly, this extraordinary ‘opera in three acts for solo soprano’, a dramatic retelling of Harald Hardrada’s doomed invasion of England in 1066, seems with hindsight a landmark of her arrival in British music. All of the unmistakable fingerprints of her work are in place: the wit of allusion and elision; the sharp definition of materials and the laconic style of delivery; the humour and playfulness of stereotype and genre; the interest in music, literature and folk traditions of other cultures; and her abiding love of telling stories. Her colourful and attractive choices of subject-matter are another unique characteristic, narratives that in other hands would have seemed naïve, but in hers are revealed as full of sincerity, richness and depth. Her musical material too finds subtlety in the apparently simplest things – a whole-tone scale or a series of major chords, for instance, revealed with a new meaning and a new freshness. For Weir, brightness and clarity are the touchstones of her work.
