Source text - English In 1897 Mahler took the supreme appointment of his career, as Kapellmeister and artistic director at the Vienna Court Opera. It was unthinkable in Vienna for a Jew to command such a prestigious position, and Mahler was forced to convert to Catholicism, the official religion of Franz-Joseph's Austro-Hungarian Empire. Around the time of Mahler's birth, Jews had been given more liberal civil rights, and they had flocked to Vienna from throughout the Empire in search of education and a better life.
