Source text - English During the recovery period, patients receive medications to prevent organ rejection and pain. All bowel transplant recipients require an ileostomy for approximately 1 year after surgery. The ileostomy allows the doctors to take small samples of the bowel tissue for examination. This tissue is checked for signs of rejection and infection. When the bowel function is normal and the patient is well, a surgeon will reconnect the bowel so that stool passes through the anus and the ileostomy will be removed.
