Firefox, of course! Sep 24, 2008

I use both Firefox and Internet Explorer, but IE is just for checking what my websites look like on a browser other the FF, and also for occasional visits to the rare websites that don't support FF (in fact, I don't remember the last time I ever used IE for this purpose).

What I loved the most about FF was tab browsing, a very helpful feature for those who like answering kudoz questions: you can have the kudoz page opened on a tab, some dictionary opened on another tab, then wikiped

What I loved the most about FF was tab browsing, a very helpful feature for those who like answering kudoz questions: you can have the kudoz page opened on a tab, some dictionary opened on another tab, then wikipedia, or many other websites - all on a single window.

But then IE also came with tabs. Still, FF is the most translator-friendly browser: it has great add-ons. My favorites:
- EN/DE/PTBR dictionaries for spell checking
- smart bookmarks for quick access to links I visit most often
- currency exchange rates
- dictionary search on the search bar
- weather report
- add block for blocking annoying adds
I also like the stability and security FF gives to my browsing experience.

Ever since I discovered FF, IE just doesn't work for me anymore. The other browsers don't count either, because
1) I'm satisfied with FF
2) I don't like experimenting too much when it comes to internet browsers
3) As a webmaster (http://fidusinterpres.com) I must "go with the flow" and always dedicate more attention to the browsers that my website's visitors use the most

I am not a geek, Firefox is many people's favourite browser Sep 24, 2008

I just like the simpleness of it and of course like many of you I was also sold with the tab thing!
I also think that most designers have Firefox on mind when they do their Websites. In fact when I am designing things it's my default browser. And everything looks like the way I have designed when I check it in Firefox but then if I try to see it in IE tables are not where they are supposed to, the css I took so long to write are ignored, the alignments are completely wrong...It just gets

Whenever I am using somebody else's computer I just hate it if I have to use Explorer...it really gets on my nerves, the looks, the pop ups... I could go on for ever!!

By the by, I have just added Ethicle as my search browser.

IE Sep 24, 2008

Those majority of answerers who posted may not be aware, Firefox does not handle Asian characters (specifically Japanese in my case) very well.
For now whether I like it or not, IE is my only browser.:P

What about Seamonkey? Sep 24, 2008

It's basically the olde Mozilla Suite, including the browser, e-mail, html editor, irc client, etc.
Good stuff.
Although, I have switched/updated, and at this juncture use Firefox3.
I have also played with Konqueror, Galeon, Dillo, Opera, Hv3 (tcl/tk browser) and others.
But Firefox rules the roost.

Firefox rocks Sep 24, 2008

Well, I ever since I found out about Firefox few years go I use only firefox.

I am also software developer and built few websites and for better checks especially for JavaScript better debugging for JavaScript and not like IE does and error happened at line 4,3.

it is true that IE is more exposed to threats due to use of AxtiveX controls that are used at most by hackers to exploit all the details.

Japanese characters should work fine in Firefox... Sep 25, 2008

I'm not sure what sort of problems you are experiencing, but I'm using Firefox all the time and it displays Japanese (and Chinese too, for that matter) flawlessly (VERY rarely you have to set the encoding manually, but that's about it). Tested extensively on both English and Japanese versions of Windows XP (I see no reason to upgrade to Vista, but it should work fine on any system) - I use it for both work and private browsing and I have not encountered a single site that would not display the characters correctly (formatting is another story though).

If you want to give Firefox another change, do tell us what problems you're experiencing - someone might be able to help. And finally, just for reference, Firefox also has a Japanese version that can be downloaded here: http://mozilla.jp/firefox/

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Maxthon use IE engine for page rendering? That would make it just as safe (or unsafe) as Internet Explorer...

That is not true. Asian characters are fine, but it mostly depends on your system capabilities, not the FF itself.
Maybe you'd need to additionally install something, or change setting in FF, but IMHO it handles Asian characters (in my case rather Chinese, than Japanese) much better, than any other browser I have ever used. I can even choose which font it should use to show characters!

Alta Vista Sep 25, 2008

I find Alta Vista far easier to work with than Google, and have never learnt to use anything else. Inertia, I suppose, but it works for me and that is a strong argument!

I change the language settings constantly, which is quick and easy with Alta Vista - and this is a really brilliant filter in the pairs I work in. Then I use quotes and very basic boolean search tactics (plus or minus) most of the time.

There is an option for advanced searches, which I ocasionally find useful too.

I don´t want a zillion hits. Sometimes I am delighted with two or three, but if I get it down to 30 - 100 I can skim through, and very often they are spot on, or else they give me an idea about how to refine the search.

I dare say this applies to most browsers, but old habits die hard.

I don't know about Asian characters, which sometimes appear and sometimes are completely garbled, but my setup does cope with the extra Scandinavian characters, accents and diacritics well.

So I keep going and hope it lasts as long as I want it!

Only 2.6 percent use Safari Sep 25, 2008

Does that mean only 2.6 percent here use Macintosh-systems? Or do mac-users surf with some other browser? I thought Safari is what every mac-user prefers.

Safari was, when I last tried it a few weeks ago, still not able to work properly with the T-Online email center. Whether it's Safari's or T-Online's fault I don't know, but since this is the way I check my emails from abroad, it's just not acceptable.

There are also a number of other sites that Safari doesn't display properly, so even though part of me would like to use it, I've for now given up on it.

Opera 9.5 / Firefox 3.0 Sep 25, 2008

Safer as it seems (zero 'security holes'), but not always convenient when it comes to pasting links on a website, they are not displayed as such but as text - IE 7.0 does this without a problem...

Is this somehow linked to the higher safety level offered by these browsers? Just wondering.

[Edited at 2008-09-25 09:45]

PS: Safari is also fine, but restricts the writing possibilities offered by my e-mail provider.

Avant and the new "Ocra" Sep 25, 2008

I've been using Avant for years now, switched to Firefox 3.0 and was rather dissapointed, it is very capable with plenty of add ons and gadgets but I switched back to Avant as it's far more speedier. Now they have this new "Ocra" browser which is cross between Avant and Firefox and could use Firefox add ons. Have to try it!

Opera rulz! ;) Sep 25, 2008

I have tried Firefox, but it just missed the point. Also tried K-meleon, damn fast, but still not enough. So I keep coming back to Opera; looking forward to version 9.60.
