I did some interpreting in a volunteer basis, in an association called "Service des Traducteurs d'Urgence" (Emergency Translators Service) for foreigners having problems.

I'm on the Board of the homeowners association. Our property of 721 detacjed homes with large public spaces is like a village unto itself. The job has become an all-consuming monster, but people do seem to appreciate that we are working to make the community a better place to live.

I used to volunteer once a week at a non-profit bookstore (associated to the local library) that would sell donated books at 50 cents per paperback / 1$ per hard-copy to all the people who love books and who love to read but can't afford the regular bookstore prices. I did that for about one year, than I had to stop because combined with my own hours it made me walk on my gums, and I couldn't do it any longer. Due to the limited storage space of the tiny bookstore they were forced to discard a l... I did that for about one year, than I had to stop because combined with my own hours it made me walk on my gums, and I couldn't do it any longer. Due to the limited storage space of the tiny bookstore they were forced to discard a lot of books that wouldn't sell immediately. This was heartbreaking, so I snatched those books (treasures, at times) out of their dumpster, took them home and donated them someplace else. Beautiful books will find their owner eventually...
We also allowed the people who couldn't even afford those prices to sit down on our sofas and indulge in reading as long as they wished. I loved this job.

Volunteering NOT RELATED to translation:

Volunteering RELATED to translation and language:
I coordinate an Education program for African refugees (adults and children). I translate documents, press releases and reports for the NGO I work for. I offer interprative help and accompany French-speaking refugees to UN appointments and to other public places they may need to go.
-I also teach children refugees English and basic Hebrew.
-I translated different NGOs' websites and material.
I always thought that if I couldn't donate MONEY for wonderful projects or any cause needing help, I could at least donate my TIME.

Did a fair bit of voluntary translation when I first started out in addition to my full-time job, but since I started freelancing both financial and time constraints have prevented me from taking on any more - I remember them always being fairly high volume, particularly the one's you get from NGO's!
Have also recently started volunteering as a 'helper' for an over-65 charity, which has been very rewarding. Always nice to give a little something back ... I have been involved in my town's charity shop for the past twenty two years. We get second hand clothes and household goods as well as books that we sell really cheaply. The money that the shop generates is ploughed back into the community for feeding schemes and also to fund the social worker's salary.
Charity work is like a drug- you get so "high" on the feeling of satisfaction when you see the joy on a really needy person's face when they can afford to buy their children descen... I did volunteer work (non translation-related) at the Idaho Commission for Libraries, helping with their Talking Book project (recorded books for the blind and legally blind). I had to stop due to time constraints and the impossibility of committing to a weekly schedule, as I did in the past.
Regarding translation and interpretation, I translate, when they ask me to, lots of documents for several NGOs: the Women's and Children's Alliance, Legal Aid, COMPASS, among others. I interpret and translate for refugee/human rights organizations; teach ESL to newly arrived refugees; present workshops on business skills; and help out with the Arabic section of an online archive. I also act as the official pro-bono photographer at many community events, and help at fund-rasing book sales.
