I did not know Justin. But he was part of ProZ, and with that we all lost a colleague and a friend.

I never had the chance to meet Justin, but the tears in my eyes are a good measure of how sad and tragic his death is... my condolences go out to Justin's family and friends.

To Justin's family,
My deepest feelings go to his parents and extended family.
I hope they find comfort by thinking that he is well now. He is being welcomed by those who left ahead of him, and that he will surely be there to meet again with all who now grief on earth.

Today I have read once again the lines of condolences and compassion of all the translators, friends and colleagues who share the same sadness and grief about his loss and I had to think of the following verses which I read many years ago for the first time when we were confronted in my family with a similar loss and had to mourn for my father.

Justin was much too young to be taken away from life. It is hard to think that his funeral has already taken place but I hope the more that he may rest in peace now. ▲ Collapse

I have never met you, but from my first encounters with ProZ I remember the cheeky little penguin, later replaced by your smiling, friendly face. The messages were always prompt and helpful. Even without knowing you personally, you left an impression of a beautiful person.
We will all miss you, the world became a sadder place.

My name is Henry Dotterer, and I run ProZ.com. I've had the privilege of working with Justin for two and a half years, and I am very honored to have the opportunity to speak today on behalf of myself, Justin's coworkers, and the thousands of people around the world who Justin made an impact on. I have so much I would like to say, I hope you will give me ten minutes.
There are some people who you don't appreciate until they are gone. Justin was not one of them. Justin was remarkably talented, enthusiastic and helpful, and no one could miss that. A true gentleman, by all reports a rock of a friend, and certainly a genius. The first evidence I saw of his abilities was when he completed a test assignment, an application, we have for people interested in working with the company. He did it in less than half the time that anyone else ever had. He was remarkably fast. In his interview, he exploded onto the scene. By the end of it, he had talked to all of us, understood what we were doing, and even had a few tips to share. As it turns out, this was just the beginning of the lessons he would give us.
Everything Justin did was full of energy and passion. He threw himself into his work, whatever came up, programming and systems administration, customer support, even sales... whatever it was, he would always tackle it full on, and he would always succeed. He would make mistakes along the way, usually in being too ambitious, too aggressive, but it became clear that this was one of his ways of learning. He would learn from his mistakes and never repeat them, he'd even save others from repeating them.
Almost overnight, Justin redefined the mood of the company and the people around it. His energy pervaded the place. He became our heart... the heart of the team and community, and made everything more fun. Technically and professionally, he developed capabilities that you would be hard-pressed to find in someone of any age. And he just kept learning, always passing along what he learned to those around him. Always helping, always teaching. Always with a smile and a friendly word. And when judgment calls came up, he would always do what he thought was right.
As for what he accomplished, he did more for more people than many of us ever will. I know that Craig and Dems from CBs credit him with their success. And his joining my company certainly represented the turning point for us. But those are just two examples.
In ProZ.com, Justin found a place to apply so many of his talents, to the great benefit of so many more people than that. The work that he did gave people a way to follow their dreams, and to better their lives. We can't really know everyone that he touched, but I'd like to give you all a sense of what he was up to... Justin's worked on things that allowed a woman in Italy, in remission from cancer, to quit her day job and move from a big city to a peaceful town. The stuff he worked on gave a translator in Japan the opportunity to move back to his hometown to be with his sick mother. A young woman in Germany wrote in to tell us that finding ProZ.com—Justin's work helped her do that—“changed her life” and she “never looked back.” These are not unique, the names are endless, literally thousands of these people, in almost every country in the world, were touched by Justin's work, and moreover, by his personal help.
And for all his abilities, and responsibilities, Justin was always quick to drop everything when anyone needed help. It didn't matter if it was one of us in the company, a customer who wanted something special done, or a new person calling and asking the most basic of questions. As my colleague Enrique has put it, Justin “left us a legacy of love and kindness, a reminder that a bright man can be humble and nice and devoid of any arrogance.”
For those of you who did not see it yesterday, it is these people that Justin touched who have been sending messages of gratitude, of sadness, of love. At last check, 436 posts from people in every corner of the planet – 75 countries, someone said. There is a man in Uruguay, who when Justin and I met him last year in Buenos Aires, thanked us for having changed his life. In his post, he translated a Spanish saying: “The day you were born, everybody laughed and you cried. Live in such a way, that the day you die everybody will cry and you will laugh./ How we are crying for you, Justin!“ he wrote.
Knowing Justin, he is probably in good spirits, pulling Mark through this and doing what he can to put a smile on the rest of our faces, too. The evidence is in the countless memories of Justin that make us want to smile through our tears. And that grin of his—the picture of him in front of the computer as a kid is priceless—that beautiful smile of his will last forever.
I think he is probably teaching us even now, sharing his latest learnings. If mistakes were made at the end, mistakes of overdoing things, Justin would be crystal clear about that, I am sure. His primary concern would be seeing to it that his friends and family don't repeat his mistakes. My relationship with Justin was professional, and he wouldn't say much about his personal life, but I knew how much you guys meant to him... in just a few words... “my buddies”, “my bro”... he loved you guys. He wants you to live on and live well! Learn from his mistakes, and make him proud.
Another thing that was striking about Justin was how much he disliked putting anything off for later if he could do it now. Both in work and in fun. I remember one project, it should have taken two weeks, and I told him so. He said he could do it by the end of the day. In a Herculean showing, he worked all day and night and was done by 10 the next morning. It was unbelievable. He asked me if it would be ok if he took the rest of the day off.
But as much as he loved and attacked work, he loved and attacked life. No matter how much he was enjoying something, the conversation would be ended, and he would rush out of the office to wherever it was he was going. It always seemed to me that he was in a hurry to live life.
If anyone could squeeze a whole life into 22 years, it was Justin. He was capable, insightful, connected, and knew how to live--knew what was most important--well beyond his years. He made a difference to so many people, and to those of us who knew him, his greatest lesson is his life - a lesson in enjoying every moment, connecting with each person, achieving, and never compromising when it comes to family, friends, or doing what is right.
I, for one, am going to try to live more like you, Justin.
Knowing Justin could do anything he wanted, I was looking forward to seeing what he would choose to do, who he would become. I told him I might be working for him one day. When I heard the news, my mind went into a whirl, trying to figuring out how it is possible that Justin won't have the successful company that I imagined him having, or that he won't be the great dad that I imagined him becoming. How lucky and how loved his kids would have been – just as he was loved by his parents! It was so tangible to me, it is as though it already existed.
But then it occurred to me that I never heard Justin talk about those things for his future. What he said he wanted was to have his own island, where he would fish. Maybe he has that now. Maybe he is fishing for us.
The other possibility I've heard for all of this is that maybe God has a project he needs Justin on. Makes sense to me. He couldn't have a better man on the team.
Justin, friend, amigo, I can't help but think that you were sent to us from God. From all of us in the company, and all of those you helped and touched around the world, thank you for everything you did for us, and everything you taught us. Enjoy your island, and if you don't mind, log on every once in a while to check in on us. Share that smile and some broken Spanish, and make sure we are doing things right down here. We've been taught by the best—you—and when our time comes, we'll try to impress you with our applications. ▲ Collapse
