My favorite method! Sep 2, 2007

Best way of extracting it is half a bent paperclip, gently pulled along all the grooves.

Works great! I also bought myself a nice soft paintbrush that stays on my desk. To clean up after the paperclip

Funky keyboard covers, anyone? Sep 2, 2007

None of the options were that strange really, so I hope those who chose Other will share their stories!

Anyway, I'm hoping to minimise this problem by getting a keyboard cover - wouldn't it be great if you could get them from Cath Kidston? If anyone knows of a place where I can get one with a funky design, please drop me an e-mail!

I chose other Sep 3, 2007

because, frankly, having a clean keyboard is the least of my worries, and before reading this thread, I had no idea how you could actually go about cleaning it (thanks for the tips, but I expect I'll never get around to using them). However, now that you have drawn my attention to it, it is rather icky and disgusting. Good thing it rests on a little roller shelf thing underneath the desk so I can hide it away as soon as the day's work is done and nobody ever gets to see just how in need of love ... See more

Other: nail polish! Sep 3, 2007

I got a bit of purple nail polish on one of the keys--the result of painting my nails and typing straight afterwards... It didn't come off for ages!

Where have you read or heard this? I certainly wouldn't have the nerve either.

computer wipes Sep 3, 2007

Hi Everyone,

I clean my beloved keyboard every week with computer wipes. I also have a very very old laptop which could be connected to the Internet whenever my 10 year old son wants to do some research (about space!!!) or check BBC.

Good luck with your projects and happy translating, everyone!!

Dear Anne and Mark Sep 3, 2007

Hi. Please do forgive my lack of humour if this was a joke. But if it was not, I thought it is worth letting you know that once I cleaned me keyboard by spraying some window cleaning liquid and water (a very small amount) which resulted in buying another keyboard after several unsuccessful attempts by my husband to fix it.

Best

My cat likes to walk on my keyboard or sit on it, especially when it's supper time and I stay at my desk to late.

I was wondering why this option didn't appear on the list...My big furry long-haired grey cat always sits right beside my screen, occasionally batting at the mouse, and watching intently as new characters appear as I type type type away. I love his company/purring/batting/silly nature, but don't love the pumpkin-sized dust-"bunnies" that gather, large enough to scare away small children, and the incredible quanitity of hairs that settle in between my keys...

As long as you never turn on the Dishwasher - it should come out fine.

I spilled a cup of hot tea (no sugar) on my Brother-in-law's keyboard and it hasn't worked since.

cat fur Sep 3, 2007

Although I don't consider it particularly strange, as my cats are often to be found on my desk "helping" me with my work.
I get it out with an old (clean) paintbrush.

More disconcertingly, my "new" computer - which has a see-through panel - is also full of cat fur - it gets sucked in by the fan. I'm waiting nervously for it to break down but I console myself with the thought that my other computer (6 years old now) must also be full of the stuff, I just can't see it...

Dishwasher? I think you mean this... Sep 3, 2007

Hi,

I don't eat or drink at my computer desk either, so I manage to keep it reasonably clean.

The dishwasher thing: you can remove all the keys from the board, just push a small screwdriver gently onder a corner of each key. Then you can wash them, either by hand, as if you were doing the dishes, or in a closed cloth bag in the washing machine (use the programme for wool and delicate items). Then let them dry and put them back in place. It helps to have a second keyboard next to it, to make sure you put all the letters back in the right place.

We've done this once or twice, and it works fine.

If you want to clean the keyboard itself, taking the keys off is also a good option. Then you can use alcohol and a cotton swab to clean the inside. Just be gentle and careful, you don't want to damage the electronics.

Best,
Margreet

I had never considered this, so I may try it one of these days, because my keyboard also has some cat hair and some tiny liquid spots (mostly coffee or juice, yuck!!).

Best, too,

Ivette

this thread Sep 3, 2007

just made me take a closer look at my keyboard. It is charcoal gray, so it does not show the dirt very well (good thing), but on close inspection, it was quite disgusting. (How embarrassing for a doctor's office )
So I cleaned it off with an alcohol swab, but did not find anything more exciting than dirt and dust ...

Cat hair Sep 3, 2007

I'd suggest not to abuse your keyboard with a metal paper clip:-)

1. toothpick - best for cat hair
2. canned pressurized air - excellent for food crumps
3. dustbuster or vacuum cleaner in a low mode both for keyboard and back of the CPU - just keep it an inch away.

Any doubts in my expertise?:-)
