I voted "other", for exactly the same reason as those who already posted their comments, but I would really like to know about those who voted "their pets"

My 3 dogs and cat have VERY INTERESTING AND IMPORTANT PROFESSIONAL CAREERS!

The 3 lively Brittanies get me out of bed by first light, and then chase me around the house--with the cat not far behind (meowing)--until I've made coffee for me and breakfast for them.

Approximately every 15 to 30 minutes after that, at least one of the 3 dogs comes skidding in, taking a break from chasing bugs, birds, and lizards or patrolling for stray cows, and says: "Isn't time to go to the park yet???"

Eventually, I give in, and they take me for an hour or more walk in the park -- clears my head, and helps me stay healthy and sane!

At dusk, they are at it again, asking me to turn off the computer, feed them, watch the sunset as they play "Lucha Libre" with each other in the backyard, and finally, they signal to me that the day's "a wrap" and it's time to go to sleep...

And that's what they do IN BETWEEN all their other important activities (sniffing, chasing, barking, guarding, greeting, sleeping, jumping, monitoring the kitty, etc.).

What could be more important work than keeping your packmate healthy and happy! And besides, ask them--chasing a lizard is much more rewarding than translating!

Hello,

It is nice to see others share your views. My husband has a PhD in Intelligent Simulation and he adores his job. I, however, hate math and anything scientific. Neither of us is willing to swap!

Of course, it's not a "job", it's my own business, and I'm the only one working in any case!

I find MY job is more interesting, but my partner would surely disagree and say that being a computer analyst is MUCH more interesting than being a translator, which I would in turn disagree... See where I'm going.

I think that if one finds another person's job more interesting than their own, they should make a change.

Then again, what does interesting mean to you, to me, to our neighbor???? To me it could simply mean fascinating but it may not mean that I don't like

Like many said before me, interesting is a relative concept.

Voted me, but.... Mar 20, 2007

Especially in the winter I have looked at my cats, from where I am sitting in front of PC, dressed in three layers all over, and had the evil impulse (not acted on of course!) to go over and shake them as they lie snuggled up to each other snoozing on the sofa. Eat, cuddle, play, sleep, play, cuddle, eat, eat a moth, cuddle, sleep...Perhaps I'd be bored but I wouldn't mind swapping with them sometimes!

He managed to turn his passion for art & antiques into his job and I really enjoy surfing the web in order to find information about some exotic item for him...

she's a midwife... anything more interesting/moving/useful than helping others giving birth and bringing new life into this world? I doubt it. Would I swap? No. Badly paid, long hours, night shifts... but I admire her for what she does.

... simply because I think that every job is interested if the person who does it, loves it.

I have a friend who was a postman before he retired, and he's been so vocal in convincing the rest of the world that his job was the most interesting of all jobs in the world. Can't blame him - he just loved his job. End of the story.

Interestingly subjective Mar 20, 2007

It's really interesting to see how people have reacted to this poll. I realise 'interesting' is a subjective term but I quite like subjective as it leads to interesting discussions.

I obviously find my work very interesting.... (otherwise I would definately be doing something else......... and, yes.... becoming a cat does sometimes seem like a very enjoyable option.... allbeit not very intellectually stimulating! <

However, it's sometimes quite difficult to get excited about translating annual reports and the like when my partner is off working at one of the big London theatres.... he works as a lighting designer and pyrotechnician which even I have to admit is slightly more interesting, and a lot more 'fun' than sitting behind a desk, particularly when he gets to work outside in the sunshine! I tend to prefer my job far more in the winter though when I can wrap a woolly blanket round my legs and surgically attach myself to a lovely warm cup of tea.

Why not post a different poll - "Most bizarre fact ever learned when doing a translation?" Could make an interesting read?

Nice topic for a forum. Why don't you start it?

Hi Ivana:

Jackie has started a forum relevant to that: http://www.proz.com/post/535378#535378

Hi Kemal,

I am not sure I totally understand your above reply, though I definitely agree with your logic about loving any job in order to find it interesting.

What I mean is that you say you voted your pet, but Kemal, Mijo, can we really say that playing and/or basically doing nothing is really the best job in the world? As Mijo suggested, it may get pretty boring soon enough (or am I being a bit of a workaholic?).

For instance, one of our cats (the one who appears in my profile photo and who usually keeps me company while I work), often seems really fascinated by the monitor/PC, so I have often thought that maybe, if he could, he would also like to be a translator, say, from "cattish" to "doggish"... How cool a paw-print keyboard would look...

Best regards ("meow-meow" in cattish...),

Ivette
