I answered "Yes" because, at this moment, freelance translating is one of the few honest and straightforward jobs they can get here and make a decent living.
The fact that I could actually help them kick-start their career by sharing my knowledge and references is a bonus...
Still, I can't and won't plan their life ahead for them. What I'd like and what they'll choose might as well be two completely different things...

I would want my children to do whatever made them happy. I am lucky enough to have parents who have always embraced my ideas and supported the choices I've made. They are my biggest fans! They have really taken an interest in my career as a translator and I would aspire to be like my parents if I was blessed with children.

I would love to, but my nine year old son has already decided to become a space man. He has even seen the virgin space shuttle in the british museum and calculated how to earn money and study to sign up for Nasa.

Taking an interesting in my children's future, I want them to find a profession they can be happy with. If they choose to get into the translation business, I wouldn't complain, but honestly I can't (and don't want to) force anybody into a profession he/she wouldn't be happy with.
In earlier days, it was always good to have a brick-layer, a carpenter, a thatcher and a gardener in the family, giving you a helping hand for building your own house. Nowadays we translators need a lawyer when dealing with arrogant clients, a fitness trainer against the increasing belly, an optician for new glasses every 2nd year and, after too many years in isolation in front of a screen, maybe a headshrinker?

Well I don't have kids and probably never will have (sorry - certainly never will have) but if I had had, I would have encouraged them to travel, learn as many languages as possible and then train for a "real" profession where languages are the icing on the cake, the extra bonus that puts you ahead of the rest.
In short I would have told them to do what I intended to do: be a captain of industry, in part thanks to a knowledge of languages.
