The visits you described are from a Google crawler. Usually if you see someone (or something) accessing your profile that many times, you can assume it is a search engine crawler (the mechanism that collects information about web pages).

Please see http://www.proz.com/topic/58344

So it's not, as I imagined, an obsessed weirdo that visits my profile 80 times a day!

[PS: Only kidding - I didn't really believe that. But I did think that an exceptionally high number of visitors were located somewhere around Alma, Michigan]

Useful Feb 27, 2007

Yes, it's useful to know where my visitors come from and how they find me.

Partly Useful Feb 27, 2007

The general idea of the "Visitors" tab is good with all its details except one - the website that provides information about the IP (the online IP-locater) when you click on the IP-link. The problem with it is that, apparently, the accuracy of the reflected information has not been taken into consideration since a most primitive test reveals the inaccuracy of its data and it can hardly be used as a reliable source (except for those who are more excited about the feature itself, and not the data ... The problem with it is that, apparently, the accuracy of the reflected information has not been taken into consideration since a most primitive test reveals the inaccuracy of its data and it can hardly be used as a reliable source (except for those who are more excited about the feature itself, and not the data correctness).
Thus, the Visitors tab is useful to provide information on where a visitor has come from (though with a few drawbacks) etc as well as to show the IP address of a visitor, which, personally I, use to make a search when necessary by means of other online IP trackers, being unsatisfied with the inaccuracy of the locater provided.

If they visit but they don't get in touch... Feb 27, 2007

I think that if a visitor visits your profile but never gets in touch, it is most probable that your profile does not match what they were looking for.

So as far as I can see, checking the IP, trying to find out who the visitor was, and getting in touch with him/her might not yield solid results... The only use in my opinion is that it is simply interesting to know from what countries do you get more requests.

How do I check visitors to my profile? Feb 27, 2007

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't even know how to check the IP address of visitors to my profile, if any. I don't see a "visitors" tab in my profile.
Help!
Kind regards,
Jenny.

If you are a full member, you can go to 'my Proz.com', 'setting' and then 'visitors'.

Good luck

I would appreciate more details Feb 28, 2007

I am sometimes baffled by the search strings entered in search engines to end up in my profile - some of them simply make no sense and I don't know how the person landed here.

I would appreciate getting more info, although I am sure I will not get what I'm asking for, because of privacy concerns. I would appreciate getting more info, although I am sure I will not get what I'm asking for, because of privacy concerns. When I see my profile was visited by a freelancer/outsourcer, I'd like to know which one - but there's no info. Also, several visits mention they come from Google, but there is no search string in sight, so I don't know how they landed in my profile.

I find it nice to have access to this information, especially that I can display it by visit or by visitor. I can really see a pattern. I can directly link some of my actions/efforts to the traffic in my profile - sometimes it goes up right after I do something and this helps me measure the impact of the different things I "play" with. A good tool to see what I can do online to get traffic.

Now, if only the visitor page could also reveal why a certain visitor didn't get in touch with me - but I'm only dreaming in colour here...

Where are the other search engines? Feb 28, 2007

Hi!

Under the 'Came from' coulmn in the 'Visitors' page of our Profile, I observed the following trend:

In 99% cases, the visitors have come either from 'Google' or from 'Direct Link/Unknown'.

I wonder if other Proz members have, more or less, the same patterns in their 'Visitors' page?

1. If yes, than why there are no visitors from Yahoo, MSN and other several hundred search engines, which are being visited by millions of visitors daily?

1. If yes, than why there are no visitors from Yahoo, MSN and other several hundred search engines, which are being visited by millions of visitors daily?

Is Proz only optimized for Google and is not searchable by other so many popular search engines?

Are the visitors coming from search engines other than Google, being included in 'Direct Link/Unknown'? In fact, what does exactly the 'Direct Link/Unknown' mean?

I would really be very happy if a moderator/Site Staff could elaborate on this.

Thanks!

Slightly off-topic, I suppose... Feb 28, 2007

but I found out that my ex-boyfriend had googled me and visited my Proz profile 11 times in one evening.
I saw the IP was in NYC and I knew he was living in New York at that stage and I was able to trace it right back to him.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind. There is nothing on my Proz site that he didn't already know. We had a good laugh about it. I think he probably just wanted to look at my picture... See more

But generally, people find my Proz page via Google under Irish/Gaeilge/Gaelic/Ireland/Dublin translation.

Thank you, Maryam. All is revealed! Or rather, not all, as most of my visitors seem to be "unknown", as with other Prozians.
Best wishes, Jenny.
