Dear all,

I've tried Memoq and I like the Zen Mode and other features, but I always go back to Trados because of these problems:

-There seems to be no way to pre-translate documents with MyMemory as you would in Trados. MyMemory gives me excellent results in several kinds of projects.

Dear all,

I've tried Memoq and I like the Zen Mode and other features, but I always go back to Trados because of these problems:

-There seems to be no way to pre-translate documents with MyMemory as you would in Trados. MyMemory gives me excellent results in several kinds of projects.

-I have a Google Translate API key, but before I need to install the Google TM plugin for Memoq. I follow the instructions in https://www.memoq.com/en/how-to-integrate-google-machine-translation-into-memoq but the link in Step 2 ("Download the Google plugin from this link, and launch the installer.") is broken and I can't find in anywhere else.

Could someone let me know how to find the plugin, and ideally fix the broken link in Memoq's Help?

Kind regards,

Alberto

Match level is the key May 9, 2019

I have to disagree with your assertion that MyMemory gives "excellent results". After experimenting with MyMemory several times, the thought of considering MyMemory a reliable resource for professional work raises a lot of questions in my mind.

Now, having given my uncalled for opinion (I could not help it, and apologise), you can link memoQ to MyMemory (full information here).

Indeed when you translate with a TM plugin, its matches are penalized by a certain percentage and you cannot pretranslate with the "Exact TM match" in the Pre-translate and statistics dialog box, but you should be able to pretranslate using the "Good TM match" or "Any TM match" and this should grab potential proposals from MyMemory.

I have tried to find out whether you can remove the penalty for TM plugin matches. It should be feasible, perhaps with a negative penalty for the "MyMemory" memory in a set of TM settings you can create for your projects (I have not tried). This might be a good question for Kilgray's support team if you can drop them a line.

Thanks and clarifying remark May 9, 2019

Thanks a lot for your help, Tomás! I'll try it ASAP.

Well, you are disagreeing with something I didn't say. I didn't say that MyMemory gives excellent results (which would imply that it gives everybody excellent results in any kind of project); I said it gives me excellent results in several kinds of projects, only in the EN > ES language pair and in projects related to a few particular topics.

Also, I obtain the excellent results in Trados; I hope MyMemory really work

I'll give it a try and let you know. Still, if someone knows how to find the Google TM plugin for MemoQ, I would appreciate your help. I can't contact Kilgray wia their support system because I am only testing MemoQ, I don't have a licence or account.

It didn't work May 9, 2019

Tomás, I tried your link. Actually I had already followed those instructions in the past unsuccessfully. The MyMemory plugin is correctly enabled, as well all the other relevant options, as far as I know.

I was hoping that the "good match" option would make a difference, but I still get no MT results while translating nor after the pre-translate process.

Snif!

Hmm, isn't the Google Translate now integrated into memoQ? I can't remember having to download/install it separately for v8.7.

Another way to pretranslate with Mymemory is to create a (free) MateCat project, open yr files in it and then download a project TMX. Most useful matches will be in this TMX. Then clean it in Heartsome TMX Editor (free) to remove any segments with src text and empty trgt, and use this TMX in yr CAT tool of choice.

Michael

Good workaround May 9, 2019

Thanks, Michael!

That sounds like a very good solution for certain projects, especially if there is only one larga file to work with, but maybe too time-consuming if you need to work with several files and/or if you have to work on many little projects.

I have done more or less the same in the past:

-Create a project in Trados
-Pre-translate the files using (only) MyMemory as a resource
-Create an ad hoc TM
-Import the pre-translated file

I have done more or less the same in the past:

-Create a project in Trados
-Pre-translate the files using (only) MyMemory as a resource
-Create an ad hoc TM
-Import the pre-translated files into the TM
-Export the TM to tmx format
-Create an ad hoc TM in Memoq and import the tmx file created with Trados (MyMemory content).
-Create a project in Memoq and select the Memoq ad hoc memory plus other relevant TMs you want to use and pre-translate.

The reason for all this mess is:

-I just can't find the way to use MyMemory properly in MemoQ (and I have read in several fora that it is impossible to make it work the same way it works in Trados, CafeTran, etc.)
-I don't know how to get the Google TM plugin
-I love some features that Memoq has and Trados does not: the wonderful Zen mode for a "troubled mind" like mine (I have four kids, etc.), the Terminology management, and QA system, etc.

As usual, CafeTran (the veritable Swiss army knife of CAT tools) has a solution! May 10, 2019

Hmm, you mentioned CafeTran, which I am also a big fan of. I do know that CafeTran can easily create a TMX from a MT engine, just right-click in the MT pane and select create TMX, or something like that. I wonder if it works with MyMemory?

////// five minutes later //////

OK, just checked: it works!

Have a loo

Very sharp! May 10, 2019

Muchas gracias, Michael.

I'll definitely try your workaround, which seems much simpler.

And kudoz on your "cutting edge" remark.
