Better, I would say, but not all my own doing Mar 13, 2017

I think it is easier to play around with terminology, usage, idioms, multilingual official versions of names of organisations etc. with the help of the Internet than it was even five years ago.

And this makes it easier to provide good translations, I think.

No Mar 13, 2017

I wouldn't have been selling my services as a translator then if they weren't good enough.

Good then, good now, same old.

Lack of experience and quality don't have to be inversely correlated. Quite the opposite very often.

My translations have not gotten better in the last 5 years because there is no superlative to perfect!

If it only were true, haha. I guess that translation quality depends on a couple of factors, including your level of concentration or your mood on a given day. And it cannot always be a straight line up, just like everything else in live.

Just today, I saw what a proofreader did with one of my translations, and all I could wonder was why on earth I had myself fooled by the source text so much. He or she really added value. And that self-reflection is exactly what I need from time to time. Never take anything for granted!

Other - about the same Mar 14, 2017

Of course I've learned more terminology and been exposed to more subjects, but I've been at this business for more than 40 years. My zeal to be accurate and capture the nuances of meaning in smooth, appropriate language has existed since the beginning. I don't cringe when I see work that I've translated in the past. It stands the test of time.
