I usually charge by the time needed, at my regular hourly rate.

It is always a good idea to clarify the customer's expectations beforehand: from simply answering "Name OK" to a full report with several pages of discussions on semantic charge of each name and examples of similar-sounding names and their implications/evocative value/relationship to potential competitors, the job can potentially span a lot of tasks. By setting the scope for the job beforehand, you avoid working in excess (and not being paid all your work).

I do quite a lot of these... Apr 11, 2016

...and I quote a higher fixed fee rather than an hourly rate. They rarely take more than an hour, but they're potentially very valuable to the end client. And if you're working for an agency, they should be charging a substantial fee too.

You certainly have a point. I do some brands like this every year, but they are not my main activity. While I am aware that I could (and probably should) charge more, my hourly rate feels alright as I enjoy writing the reports on the words and their potential implications.

Def. a flat rate. Apr 12, 2016

Or set a minimum charge for this type of projects.

I did these projects for some end clients, the way we did it is they organized a group of us in a web platform and then we brainstormed names, for about two hours each. Then they picked what suited them best out of all the names we provided as a group. This was a copywriting service rather than translation, and each of us charged our flat rate.

Flat fee Apr 12, 2016

I have been doing this for years for an agency. The agency no doubt makes quite a bit from this work and pays me only a fraction, but I am quite satisfied as it doesn't take much time. The feedback the agency requires is off the cuff, that is no internet research is involved, you just have to record whatever comes to mind on hearing or seeing the brand name and point out if there are any offensive connotations, or if a similar brand exists. The feedback the agency requires is off the cuff, that is no internet research is involved, you just have to record whatever comes to mind on hearing or seeing the brand name and point out if there are any offensive connotations, or if a similar brand exists. It hardly takes an hour. Usually, a bunch of names, varying from 10 to 60, are send to me and sometimes all that I have to do for each is to answer in yes or no, that is, whether it is suitable for my market (ie., India) or not, and if not, I need to add a line or two explaining why.

The fee ranges from 25 USD to 60 USD, depending on how much work in involved. Sometimes it is just a yes or no, but sometimes there would be a bunch of questions which would require longer answers.

I have also done more detailed brand name analyses for clients involving checking on the internet and brand name registries for other similar brand names in my market, and have provided detailed explanations about cultural issues related with the brand name. For these I charge higher fees of a 100 dollars or more.

I charge by the time needed as well. My hourly rate for that kind of project depends on the value for the end customer and is higher than my rate for translation.
